You can use an Unraid server to run a software encoder that sends a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live event in a loop. YouTube still needs an encoder feed: this is different from uploading a video or scheduling a Premiere. The setup is to make the video and persistent encoder settings available inside a Docker container or VM, enter the event’s stream URL and key, then verify the preview in YouTube Studio before starting the event.
What you need before you start
- An Unraid server with Docker enabled, or a VM capable of running your chosen encoder.
- A prerecorded video file stored in a share that the encoder can read.
- A maintained encoder container or software encoder, with its current documentation for configuration paths and looping behavior. Exact template fields, UI labels and commands vary by encoder; the steps below are not a tested recipe for a particular community image.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time live-streaming enablement can take time, so confirm access before the planned event. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance
You will also need to decide the event’s title, description, privacy and schedule in YouTube Studio. A continuously running encoder does not make the event or its content exempt from YouTube’s rules. Use media you have rights to stream, including its music and other embedded material, and do not assume that repeated or reused content qualifies for monetization.

Set up the encoder on Unraid
- Check Docker and locate the video. In Unraid, confirm Docker is enabled and place the source file in a user share. Unraid’s share documentation explains how shares are managed.
- Install a maintained encoder container from its documented template. Map the host folder containing your video to a container path for media. Map a host folder under
appdatato the configuration path specified by that encoder. The host path is where Unraid stores the data; the container path is what the encoder sees. Select the container-side path in the encoder. If the encoder only reads the source, use a read-only media mapping where the template supports it. Unraid explains container path mappings and configuration in its container guidance. - Keep the network configuration conservative. Leave the template’s recommended network mode unless the encoder requires a change. Unraid commonly uses bridge mode, which exposes only ports that are explicitly mapped. A basic encoder sending an outbound feed generally does not need inbound port forwarding. Do not expose Unraid’s management interface or an unnecessary encoder control panel to the public internet.
- Configure the source and loop. Point the encoder at the file’s container-side path and enable repeat/loop if you want playback to restart when it reaches the end. The control name and behavior depend on the encoder image, so follow that project’s current documentation. A playback loop does not by itself ensure continuous delivery to YouTube.
- Keep settings persistent. Store configuration outside the container image using the mapped configuration folder. Unraid notes that persistent variables and settings are needed to preserve state when recreating an image or reinstalling an application. Verify that your chosen encoder stores the settings you need at the mapped path.
Create the YouTube event and connect the stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream, choose its privacy and event details, and check that the channel is eligible to stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching encoder fields. YouTube describes the key as functioning like the stream’s password and address; keep it private. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s stream settings help.
- Choose RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for sending a live feed. Use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than copying settings from an unrelated setup.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check the video and audio, then start the scheduled event using the controls shown there. YouTube’s workflow and labels can change; follow the current Live Control Room prompts.
- Observe the stream after it starts. Test the full path before relying on unattended operation, and have a way to notice a stopped encoder, lost connection, full storage pool or YouTube-side interruption.
Choose stream settings and plan for reliability
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the exact resolution and frame rate you intend to send. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of delivery.

- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends that available upload capacity exceed the total outgoing stream bitrate and suggests 20% headroom. Account for other traffic using the same connection. Its streaming tips also recommend a reliable network, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing and monitoring audio/video quality.
- Unraid capacity: The server must be able to read and encode or pass through the chosen media continuously. Actual CPU, GPU, storage and network requirements depend on the encoder, source format and output settings; the sources do not establish a universal hardware specification. Check the encoder’s documentation and observe resource use during a test.
- Recovery: A loop handles the end of a file, not every failure. Decide how you will detect an encoder exit, container restart, network outage, full share or YouTube interruption, and test the recovery path. Running on a server does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Archives: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on YouTube to provide a complete archive of a 24/7 or longer event. Keep the original video and, if a full recording matters, configure a separate recording workflow and monitor its storage.
Common problems and fixes

Unraid encoder or dedicated hardware?
A software encoder on Unraid makes sense if you already operate the server and want to manage the media, configuration and stream process there. A dedicated appliance is an alternative if you want an encoder separate from that server. YouTube names the AJA HELO Plus and describes a PlayToStream feature for prerecorded media in its encoder setup documentation. The cited material does not establish a controlled price, reliability or performance comparison, so neither option can be called categorically better. Confirm the appliance’s current supported workflow and availability before buying; it is not required for the Unraid method.
