How to Use Thread.sleep() in Selenium with Java

Use Thread.sleep(1000) to pause a Selenium Java test, but prefer an explicit wait when the next step depends on browser state.

To pause a Selenium test in Java for one second, call Thread.sleep(1000);. The argument is milliseconds, and Java requires you to handle the checked InterruptedException. Use this only when a fixed delay is genuinely what you need: for browser readiness, Selenium recommends waiting for the specific condition the next step depends on.

Pause a Selenium test with Thread.sleep()

Thread.sleep(long millis) is a Java method that pauses the thread executing the test for the requested number of milliseconds. For example, Thread.sleep(1000); pauses for one second. It does not inspect the browser or confirm that a page, element, or animation has reached a particular state.

Here is the basic pattern after an action that triggers a page change:

driver.findElement(By.id("load-result")).click();
Thread.sleep(1000);
WebElement result = driver.findElement(By.id("result"));

The call itself is ordinary Java, not a Selenium-specific wait. The example shows the syntax, but the fixed delay can be too short for a slow response or unnecessarily long when the page is ready sooner.

Handle InterruptedException

Thread.sleep() throws the checked exception InterruptedException. One straightforward option is to declare it on the test method, as in this complete illustrative example:

import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
import org.junit.jupiter.api.Test;

class SleepExampleTest {
    @Test
    void loadResult() throws InterruptedException {
        WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
        try {
            driver.get("https://example.com");
            driver.findElement(By.id("load-result")).click();
            Thread.sleep(1000);
            WebElement result = driver.findElement(By.id("result"));
            System.out.println(result.getText());
        } finally {
            driver.quit();
        }
    }
}

Replace the example URL and element IDs with ones from your application. Declaring throws InterruptedException lets the exception propagate to the test framework; it does not turn the fixed delay into a condition-based wait.

Prefer an explicit wait for browser state

When the next command depends on an element or state becoming ready, use an explicit wait for that condition instead of guessing a delay. Selenium’s waiting strategies documentation describes explicit waits as polling for a condition until it succeeds or the timeout is reached.

import java.time.Duration;
import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.WebDriverWait;

WebDriverWait wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10));
WebElement result = wait.until(
    d -> d.findElement(By.id("result"))
);

This waits for the element lookup to succeed, up to the configured timeout. Choose a condition that matches the next operation: finding an element is not the same as ensuring that it is visible or that its text has changed. Selenium’s expected conditions guidance covers element existence, staleness, visibility, visible text, and title matching.

Choose the condition the next step needs

  • Use presence or a successful lookup when the next step only needs the element to exist in the DOM.
  • Use visibility when the next step needs a visible element.
  • Use a text or title condition when the test depends on a particular displayed value or page title.
  • Use staleness when the test needs to know that an old element reference is no longer attached after a page update.

Explicit waits and implicit waits are not interchangeable

An implicit wait is configured on the driver and applies to element-location calls throughout the session. Selenium’s Java API takes a Duration:

driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(Duration.ofSeconds(5));

That setting affects element searches; an explicit wait is applied locally to a particular condition. For a state-specific synchronization need, the explicit wait makes the dependency visible in the test rather than adding a session-wide delay to element lookups.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Selenium warns not to combine implicit and explicit waits because their timing can become unpredictable. Its example notes that a 10-second implicit wait combined with a 15-second explicit wait could result in a timeout after 20 seconds. Avoid configuring both strategies together; select the approach that fits the test.

When a fixed sleep is useful

A hard-coded sleep can be a temporary debugging aid. Selenium troubleshooting guidance says that if inserting one makes a flaky step pass, synchronization may be involved. Treat that as evidence to identify the needed browser condition, then replace the sleep with an explicit wait for that condition.

For authored tests, Selenium’s newer guidance is more direct: “Never sleep in a test.” The practical reason is that a sleep waits for elapsed time, not readiness: if it is too short the following step can fail, and if it is longer than necessary it adds avoidable delay to every run.

Troubleshoot common Thread.sleep() problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Compiler error says InterruptedException must be caught or declared Thread.sleep() throws a checked exception. Declare throws InterruptedException on the method or handle the exception with a try/catch block.
The test still fails after sleeping The page took longer than the fixed interval, or the failure is not caused by readiness. Wait for the particular element or state the next operation requires, and inspect the actual failure if that condition times out.
The test is consistently slower than necessary The chosen delay is longer than the page’s actual readiness time. Replace the sleep with a condition-based explicit wait that proceeds once the condition succeeds.
Wait duration seems longer or less predictable than configured Implicit and explicit waits may both be affecting the operation. Do not mix the strategies; remove one and use a deliberate wait model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many milliseconds are in one second for Thread.sleep()?

1,000 milliseconds.

Does Thread.sleep() wait for a Selenium element?
