1. Ask Codex to build a focused site
Begin with a small, specific request that explains what the site is for and who will use it. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Sites guide recommends starting with a focused use case rather than an expansive, underspecified build.

For example, describe the intended audience, the page’s main purpose, the information it must show, and the primary action a visitor should take. Review the first version for structure, labels, content, calculations, and interactive elements. Try the main experience as if you were opening the site for the first time.

2. Open the rendered page locally
The OpenAI Academy demonstration published July 9, 2026 shows a workflow in which the presenter asks Codex to “stage it locally” and then opens the browser preview. If the preview does not appear automatically, ask Codex to stage the website locally, then open the rendered page in the browser available in your setup. The demonstration illustrates a workflow; it does not guarantee identical controls or behavior in every project or configuration.

The ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser is available on macOS and Windows, but features depend on your plan and workspace settings, and an administrator may restrict browser access. See OpenAI’s current built-in browser help for availability details.
3. Capture a screenshot and give actionable feedback
Capture the rendered page at the viewport you want to review. In the Academy demonstration, the presenter says, “So I can take screenshots at this point,” and describes pulling a screenshot into the conversation and saying, “this spacing is too tight.” Treat this as a demonstrated way to communicate a visual issue, not a promise that every Codex setup exposes the same screenshot controls.

Make feedback concrete: identify the visible element, say what looks wrong, and describe the desired change. For example: “The gap between the heading and the first card is too small at this viewport; increase it while keeping the cards aligned.” This gives Codex a specific visual target instead of asking it to make the page “look better.”
4. Review the changes and verify the experience
After Codex applies your requested changes, reopen the rendered page and inspect it again. The Academy clip shows Codex visually inspecting a site and clicking through it for UAT-style checks; what is available can vary by project and configuration.

- Check the layout at the viewport you care about, including the element you asked to change.
- Read the page text and confirm the hierarchy and labels are clear.
- Click the main controls and follow the central user journey when the site has interactive behavior.
- Repeat the review after further edits.
A screenshot records an appearance at one point and viewport. The cited OpenAI material does not establish that Codex automatically runs a formal pixel-diff comparison, a browser compatibility matrix, or an accessibility audit. Perform any such checks separately if your project requires them.
5. Check the deployed site before sharing
Once the site is ready, deploy it through the Sites workflow, open its URL in Chrome, and check the page again before sharing. OpenAI’s Sites guide says the in-app browser is not currently supported for that deployment workflow. That qualification is specific to the Sites workflow; it should not be confused with general built-in-browser guidance about reviewing local pages.

Browser access, debugging, and data controls
When you need deeper browser diagnostics
OpenAI’s Help Center describes full Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) access as a deeper debugging mode for browser state, console output, network traffic, and performance. Codex requests explicit approval before using full CDP access to inspect a website. Consult Using Codex with your ChatGPT plan for the applicable access and plan details.

The cited statement concerns those controls; it is not a broader assurance about all data handling. Common problems and what to check
- No browser preview appears: Ask Codex to stage the site locally, as shown in the Academy demonstration. If browser access is unavailable, check whether your app, plan, workspace settings, or administrator permits it.
- The screenshot does not show the change: Reopen or refresh the rendered page after Codex edits it, and confirm you are viewing the intended page and viewport before capturing again.
- A control looks right but does not work: A still image cannot confirm interaction. Click the control and follow the relevant user journey in the rendered site.
- You cannot use the in-app browser for deployment review: Open the deployed URL in Chrome; the Sites guide says its deployment workflow does not currently support the in-app browser.
- You need console, network, or performance details: The Help Center describes full CDP access for deeper inspection. Codex asks for explicit approval before using that access.
