To use macOS 27’s new features, first confirm that your Mac is compatible, make a current backup, and install the upgrade from Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. After restarting, begin with Spotlight and Siri AI, Visual Intelligence, Photos editing, Safari’s new organization and alerts, natural-language Shortcuts, Liquid Glass appearance controls, and the redesigned parental controls.
Apple Intelligence features are not universal: they depend on the Mac, Siri and device-language settings, region, beta status, and sometimes server-side usage limits. The walkthrough below separates the features you can try immediately from those with language or account requirements.

Check whether your Mac can install macOS 27
Apple says macOS 27 supports Macs built with Apple silicon, including M-series and A-series chips. Its compatibility list identifies these model families:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Mac family | Models identified by Apple | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Neo | 2026 model | Confirm the exact model in Apple’s current compatibility guidance. |
| MacBook Air and MacBook Pro | Apple-silicon models from 2020 onward | Check that the Mac has Apple silicon rather than an Intel processor. |
| iMac and Mac mini | Apple-silicon models from 2020 onward | Check the chip and model year in About This Mac. |
| Mac Studio | Apple-silicon models from 2022 onward | Verify the individual model, not only the product name. |
| Mac Pro | Apple-silicon model from 2023 | Verify that it is the Apple-silicon version. |
Apple’s product page also describes eligibility more generally as any Mac with Apple silicon. Because model cutoffs and availability can change, compare your exact Mac with the current lists on Apple’s macOS 27 upgrade instructions and the macOS 27 product page before you begin.
#1 Best Overall
- Designed for Mac.
- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you.
- Mac-ready and USB-C compatible for effortless connectivity and functionality.
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more.
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware.
Back up before upgrading
Apple recommends backing up your files before installing a macOS upgrade. Its instructions do not require a particular backup device or method, so use the backup system you already trust and make sure it has completed before starting Software Update. An external SSD can be useful when you need a separate copy, but buying a drive is not a macOS 27 requirement.
Install macOS 27 from Software Update
- Open Spotlight and search for Software Update, or choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Wait while the panel checks which Apple software is compatible with your Mac.
- When macOS 27 is offered, choose the displayed Update, Upgrade, or Restart action. The wording can differ depending on the Mac’s current version and the state of the installation.
- Follow the on-screen prompts until the Mac restarts and returns to the desktop. Do not treat the first restart as proof that every feature is available; some services and settings are still governed by language, region, account, and feature-specific requirements.
Apple Support lists macOS 27.0.1 as providing bug fixes and recommends updates for macOS 27 users. That page was published on September 28, 2026, so check the current point release in Software Update rather than assuming 27.0.1 is still the newest build. The support note describes the update simply as: “This update provides bug fixes for your Mac.” See Apple’s macOS 27 update notes for the release information.
Understand Apple Intelligence availability before trying AI features
Apple’s Mac user guide says Apple Intelligence availability depends on Siri and the device language being set to a supported language. Some features also vary by region or language. Siri AI is described as a beta feature, initially available in English, and server-side Apple Intelligence functions can have daily usage limits.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Those limits are not a single fixed quota. Apple says they can vary with the feature being used, the complexity of a request, system demand, and policy. Therefore, a missing control, a request that cannot be completed, or a temporary limit does not necessarily mean that macOS 27 installed incorrectly. Check the language and Siri settings, the feature’s account requirements, and Apple’s current availability information before troubleshooting the installation itself. The caveats are documented in the Mac user guide for macOS 27.
Use Siri AI and Spotlight for questions, personal search, and actions
Ask from Spotlight
Spotlight is one of Apple’s described entry points for Siri AI. Open Spotlight, enter a natural-language question, and read the response in the search interface. You can ask an open-ended question instead of restricting yourself to an application name or an exact filename.
Search your own information
Try a request that refers to personal context, such as finding a message, photo, or note. The useful distinction is that you describe what you remember rather than reconstructing the exact title or folder path. Results still depend on what is indexed and on the language and account conditions described above.

Ask for an action in a supported app
Siri AI can also be asked to take an action in a supported application. Phrase the request as an outcome, then check what the system proposes before accepting it. Apple describes these app actions as supported workflows, not a guarantee that every command works in every application, language, or account configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTry the dedicated Siri app
macOS 27 also provides a dedicated Siri app. Use it when a conversational request is more convenient than a Spotlight search. The same Apple Intelligence eligibility rules and usage limits apply, so the dedicated app is an additional entry point rather than a separate entitlement.
Use Visual Intelligence with material already on your screen
Visual Intelligence on Mac can work from onscreen material, which makes it different from a phone workflow that starts with a camera view. Use it with an image, a page, or a PDF that is already visible:
- Take a screenshot containing the image or document material you want to investigate.
- Open the Visual Intelligence controls for that screenshot.
- Ask a question about what is shown, request a search, or choose an available action.
- Review the result before copying information or carrying out an action, especially when the screenshot contains small text, several objects, or sensitive information.
Apple presents screenshot-based analysis as a supported Mac workflow, but it does not promise the same result for every image or PDF. If the answer is incomplete, capture a tighter screenshot that contains only the relevant material and try again.
Draft, proofread, or rewrite text
Apple says Siri AI can help with writing in applications such as Mail and Messages. Open a draft or message, select the text you want help with, and use the writing-help control offered by the application to request a draft, a proofread pass, or a rewrite. Read the result for tone, names, dates, and factual accuracy before sending it. The writing controls depend on Apple Intelligence being available for the Mac’s current language and region; when they are absent, changing an app window or document will not create them.

Spatial Reframing
Spatial Reframing lets you change a photo’s framing after capture. Open a photo in Photos, choose the reframing control, and adjust the composition toward the subject or the space you want to emphasize. This is useful when the original framing is too wide or when you need a different emphasis for a share or presentation.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage

- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Extend
Extend expands an image beyond its original edges. Use it when a crop leaves too little room around a subject or when you need a wider composition. Inspect the added area carefully; Apple’s notes describe the capability but do not establish one predictable output for every photograph.
Clean Up
Clean Up is intended to remove distracting elements. Select the tool, mark the unwanted object, and inspect the edited image at full size. Fine details, repeating patterns, and objects that overlap the subject can produce different results from one image to another, so keep the original until you are satisfied with the edit.
Organize browsing and monitor pages in Safari
Let Safari group tabs by topic
Safari 27 can automatically group tabs by topic. Open several related pages and let Safari organize them, then review the resulting groups before moving tabs or closing a group. Automatic grouping is most useful when a research session contains distinct subjects; unrelated pages may need manual correction.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set a Notify Me alert
Notify Me watches a page and alerts you when its contents change. Use it on a page where a change matters, such as a price drop or a restock. Start monitoring from Safari’s page controls, confirm the page and alert request, and leave the alert enabled if you want Safari to notify you later. A notification depends on the monitored page changing in a way Safari can detect; it is not a promise that every site change will produce an alert.
Describe an extension idea in natural language
Apple describes a Safari Extension workflow in which you express what you want an extension to do in ordinary language. Explain the task and the desired behavior, then review the proposed extension and its permissions before using it. Natural-language creation does not remove the need to consider what data an extension can read or which pages it can modify.
Put the WebKit figure in context
Apple Developer reports over 1,000 browser-engine improvements in WebKit for Safari 27. That is a vendor-reported count of engine changes, not a laboratory speed result or a promise that every site will load a measured percentage faster. Read it as an indication of the scope of the underlying browser-engine work rather than as a personal performance benchmark. Details are in Apple’s WWDC26 macOS guide.

Build a Shortcut by describing the result you want
macOS 27 lets you describe a Shortcut in natural language, and Apple says the required action steps are assembled for you. Open Shortcuts, start a new shortcut using the natural-language creation option, and describe the complete outcome rather than listing every technical action.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple’s example is a Shortcut that texts a partner when you are heading home and includes an estimated arrival time based on traffic. A useful description would identify the trigger, recipient, message, and traffic-based arrival estimate. Inspect each assembled step, confirm the recipient and permissions, and run it manually once before relying on automation. If the generated Shortcut omits a step, edit the action list rather than assuming the text description will be interpreted identically every time.
Adjust the Liquid Glass appearance
macOS 27 introduces a Liquid Glass appearance control with a slider that runs from ultraclear to fully tinted. Open System Settings, choose the appearance settings, and move the slider toward the visual treatment you prefer. Apple’s release notes say readability is improved; the best position is still subjective because a clearer or more tinted interface can suit different lighting, wallpapers, and accessibility preferences.
Change the slider gradually while looking at menus, windows, and sidebars you use often. The control changes the interface treatment; it does not change the underlying application content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure the redesigned parental controls
The redesigned parental controls in System Settings combine several protections and scheduling options:
- Ask to Browse: a child can request permission before visiting a new Safari website.
- Communication Safety: safety features can help address sensitive communication situations.
- Time allowances: set how much time is available for permitted use.
- Schedules for app access: define when particular applications can be used.
Open the parental-controls area in System Settings, select the child account, and configure one control at a time so you can see which rule affects which activity. Apple directs parents to its child-account guidance for the exact account setup, organizer permissions, and family relationships. The controls are therefore not a substitute for creating the correct child account and family structure first.

Use the smaller changes that affect everyday work
Find messages and mail more easily
Apple highlights improved ranking in Mail search. Enter a descriptive search, inspect the most relevant results first, and narrow the query only when necessary. The change concerns ranking, so it does not alter the underlying mail folders or delete messages.
Create Calendar events from a description
Calendar can create an event from a plain-language description. Describe the event’s purpose, date, time, and place in one sentence, then verify the parsed fields before saving. Natural language is convenient, but an ambiguous date or missing time should be corrected in the event editor.
Use synced captions and translation
macOS 27 adds synced captions and translation of existing captions. When captions are available for the media you are watching, turn them on and choose the translation option offered by the player. The feature translates existing caption tracks; it does not establish that every video has captions or that every language pair is available.

AirDrop transfers are described as faster in macOS 27. Start AirDrop from the file or sharing control as usual, choose the nearby recipient, and wait for the recipient to accept. Transfer time still depends on the files, devices, and wireless conditions involved, so the release note should not be read as a fixed transfer-rate guarantee.
Refresh supported apps with a pull-down gesture
Pull-down refresh is available in apps including Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts, and Calendar. On a page or list that supports it, drag downward until the refresh indicator appears and release. The gesture requests current content from that app; it does not force every account or feed to update when its server has not changed.
What to check when a feature is missing
- The macOS 27 offer does not appear: return to Software Update and compare the exact Mac model with Apple’s compatibility list. A product family name alone is not enough when Intel and Apple-silicon versions share a name.
- An Apple Intelligence control is absent: check Siri and device-language settings, then consult the availability conditions for the specific feature. Beta rollout, region, language, and daily server limits can affect what is shown.
- Visual Intelligence gives a weak result: capture a cleaner screenshot containing the relevant image or PDF area and submit that material again.
- A Safari notification never arrives: confirm that Notify Me is attached to the intended page and that the page has actually changed. A static page produces no change event to report.
- A parental rule behaves unexpectedly: verify that the rule is attached to the intended child account and review Apple’s child-account setup guidance before changing individual limits.
