How to Use the APITemplate.io Image API in a PHP Project

A PHP cURL example for generating an image from an APITemplate.io template, with override, authentication, response, and integration guidance.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you mean generating an image from an APITemplate.io template, send a JSON POST request to its v2 create-image endpoint, authenticate with the X-API-KEY header, and provide the saved template’s ID and element overrides. APITemplate.io returns a download URL when generation succeeds. That is template-based image generation—not an arbitrary webpage screenshot API: the current documentation reviewed here does not establish an endpoint for capturing any webpage as an image.

What this API does—and what “screenshot” can mean

APITemplate.io’s documented image workflow renders an image template that you have created and saved. Your PHP application supplies values for named template elements, such as a title, and receives a URL for the generated image. The REST API also documents PDF generation from HTML or a URL, but that is not evidence of arbitrary webpage-to-image screenshot capture. See the REST API reference and the official PHP client repository.

If your requirement is a pixel capture of a public or authenticated webpage, do not treat create-image as an equivalent. The sources linked above document template image generation and PDF generation, not an arbitrary webpage screenshot image endpoint.

What you need before making the request

  • A saved APITemplate.io image template and its template ID. Each override must match a named element and property in that template.
  • An API key from the account’s API Integration page. APITemplate.io says the key is secret; store it in server-side configuration or environment variables, not committed source code. See Get Your API Key.
  • PHP with the cURL extension enabled. The example below uses PHP’s JSON exception support.

Generate a template image with PHP cURL

The current v2 REST route is POST /create-image?template_id=... on https://rest.apitemplate.io/v2/. This example encodes the template ID safely, sends a JSON override, checks transport and HTTP/API failures, and prints the returned download URL. It is based on the published API documentation and is not a live-account test.

<?php
$templateId = getenv('APITEMPLATE_TEMPLATE_ID');
$apiKey = getenv('APITEMPLATE_API_KEY');

if (!$templateId || !$apiKey) {
    throw new RuntimeException('Set APITEMPLATE_TEMPLATE_ID and APITEMPLATE_API_KEY.');
}

$url = 'https://rest.apitemplate.io/v2/create-image?' . http_build_query([
    'template_id' => $templateId,
]);

$payload = [
    'overrides' => [
        ['name' => 'title', 'text' => 'Hello from PHP'],
    ],
];

$ch = curl_init($url);
curl_setopt_array($ch, [
    CURLOPT_POST => true,
    CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER => true,
    CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER => [
        'X-API-KEY: ' . $apiKey,
        'Content-Type: application/json',
        'Accept: application/json',
    ],
    CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS => json_encode($payload, JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR),
]);

$responseBody = curl_exec($ch);
if ($responseBody === false) {
    $error = curl_error($ch);
    curl_close($ch);
    throw new RuntimeException('APITemplate.io request failed: ' . $error);
}

$statusCode = curl_getinfo($ch, CURLINFO_HTTP_CODE);
curl_close($ch);

$response = json_decode($responseBody, true, 512, JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR);
if ($statusCode < 200 || $statusCode >= 300 || ($response['status'] ?? null) !== 'success') {
    throw new RuntimeException('APITemplate.io returned an unsuccessful response.');
}

$downloadUrl = $response['download_url'] ?? null;
if (!$downloadUrl) {
    throw new RuntimeException('The response did not include a download_url.');
}

echo $downloadUrl;

The API key is sent in the request header, not as a query parameter. Keep it out of browser code and public repositories. For the endpoint, request fields, and response details, consult the REST API reference; for template and override context, see the image generation documentation.

Match overrides to the saved template

The sample override uses an element named title with a text value. Replace it with the actual element name and supported property used by your saved template. A mismatch between the submitted name or property and the template is a common integration mistake; the request body is not a free-form design description.

For example, if the template has a named text element for a headline, submit that element’s name and text value in overrides. Add further entries only for elements that exist in the template and use the properties documented for them.

Check the response before using the image

The API call is synchronous by default. Treat the response as JSON, verify the HTTP status and the API’s status field, and only then use download_url. Do not assume that any HTTP response body is a valid image URL. The REST reference also describes asynchronous generation for larger or batch work: those requests return a transaction reference and use a webhook for completion. Follow that documented flow when the synchronous response pattern is not appropriate.

Choose an integration path

Approach When it fits Important distinction
Direct REST with cURL A small PHP integration or a project that wants direct HTTP control. Uses the server-side API key in X-API-KEY and a JSON POST request.
Official PHP client A project that prefers a PHP library abstraction. The official APITemplate-io/apitemplateio-php repository describes a PHP library for API v2 and a createImage operation. Check its current installation instructions and generated-client requirements before adding it.
Direct URL feature An image-template case that suits a GET URL workflow, such as using generated images in HTML, email, or Open Graph metadata. Uses a template ID, configured auth code, and query values such as headline.text=...; the vendor describes results as cached. It is distinct from the authenticated REST POST example.

For direct URL behavior, see APITemplate.io’s Direct URL documentation. For regional processing or data-residency requirements, consult the current REST reference: it describes regional endpoints and says requests and generated files are processed and stored in the selected region. Confirm the correct host there rather than assuming the default host serves every region.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • Missing configuration: If the example throws its environment-variable error, set APITEMPLATE_TEMPLATE_ID and APITEMPLATE_API_KEY in the PHP process environment.
  • Authentication or authorization failure: Confirm the key is active and sent exactly in the X-API-KEY header. Keep the key secret and do not substitute it into a public URL.
  • Template or override mismatch: Verify the template ID and that every override’s name and property correspond to the saved image template.
  • Non-success response: Log the HTTP status and response body securely while diagnosing, then check both the HTTP result and JSON status. Avoid exposing API credentials in logs.
  • Missing download URL: Do not proceed as if generation succeeded; inspect the JSON response and follow the documented error or asynchronous flow where applicable.
  • Slow or large/batch generation: The REST reference documents asynchronous generation with a transaction reference and webhook. Use that documented mode when a synchronous request is not suitable.
  • Wrong kind of screenshot: If you need an image of an arbitrary live webpage rather than an image rendered from your template, this endpoint is not established as the solution by the current documentation cited here.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a webpage rather than render an APITemplate.io design, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF. Its screenshot endpoint and options are documented at ScreenshotNeo docs.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
