Set it up in Keyboard settings on iPhone, iPad, or Mac; iCloud Drive can keep replacements available across your Apple devices.
Set up text replacement on iPhone
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
- Tap Add.
- Enter the full text you want inserted in Phrase, then enter the trigger in Shortcut. For example, set the phrase to “On my way!” and the shortcut to “omw.”
- Save the entry. When typing, enter the shortcut and select or use the expansion offered by the keyboard.
You can also reach the setting from a text field: touch and hold the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key, open Keyboard Settings, then tap Text Replacement. To stop an unwanted correction, add the preferred word or phrase as a replacement and leave the Shortcut field blank. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains Text Replacement.

Set up text replacement on iPad
On iPad, open Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement, add an entry, and fill in its phrase and shortcut. Apple documents this keyboard feature for both iPhone and iPad in its guide to Auto-Correction and predictive text.
Set up text replacement on Mac
- Open System Settings > Keyboard > Text Replacements.
- Add a replacement by entering the text to insert and the text that should trigger it.
If you are already in an app, Apple also documents the route Edit > Substitutions > Show Substitutions, then opening Text Settings. A simple example is replacing (c) with ©. See Apple’s Mac guide to text replacements.

Keep replacements in sync across Apple devices
Apple’s documented approach uses iCloud Drive. On iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > See All > iCloud Drive and turn on Sync this iPhone if that control appears. Apple says iCloud keeps the personal dictionary up to date on other devices. On Mac, set up iCloud Drive on the Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and sign in to the same Apple Account on each; a replacement made on one can then be used on the others. This is separate from iCloud Sync in the Shortcuts app. That setting syncs multi-step Shortcuts workflows, not keyboard text replacements. Apple describes the app’s distinct control in its Mac Shortcuts sync guide.
Export or import replacements on Mac
For a local backup or transfer to another Mac, export the entries from Text Replacements:
- In System Settings > Keyboard > Text Replacements, select one or more entries.
- Drag the selection to the desktop. Apple says this creates a file named
property list.plist. - To restore or import, drag that file into the Text Replacements window and confirm.
You can keep a copy elsewhere or send the file to another Mac user. This export/import method is documented in Apple’s Mac text replacement guide.

Use word pairs with supported keyboards
Apple also supports word/input pairs in the personal dictionary for Simplified Chinese Pinyin, Traditional Chinese Pinyin and Zhuyin, and Japanese Romaji and Kana. Add the pair to the dictionary, then use it while typing with a supported keyboard. Apple lists these options in its iPhone User Guide.
