What a targeted region does
A targeted region defines the part of a rendered page that a visual check examines or treats differently. It can narrow a check to one component, such as a navigation bar, or modify comparison behavior for a portion of a broader screenshot.

This is different from merely taking a smaller screenshot: a region can change the scope or comparison rules of an assertion while the surrounding page remains part of the checkpoint. The exact region formats and comparison controls depend on the tool.

How to check one component in Applitools Playwright
Use a Playwright locator for the component and pass it as region to eyes.check(). The example below follows the documented Applitools Playwright fixture pattern; configure the fixture and project according to the integration setup used by your test suite.

How to ignore dynamic content without hiding important failures

});Apply this only when changes inside that element are outside the purpose of the test. The ignored pixels cannot reveal an unintended visual change in that area. A timestamp may be irrelevant to a layout assertion; a price, legal disclosure, or status indicator may change dynamically but still be important enough to validate separately.

Prefer stabilizing data when the changing value matters
Where practical, make the test state deterministic: use controlled test data, a consistent viewport, and deliberate animation or time behavior. These are general testing practices, not requirements unique to a particular visual tool. If the content carries meaning, assert its content or behavior separately rather than masking it and losing coverage.

Use a less strict regional comparison when structure still matters
Ignoring a region is not the only option. Applitools’ Match Regions guidance describes setting a region to Layout comparison while keeping the rest of a page at Strict. That preserves a check of the area’s layout while allowing more variation than strict visual matching. The article says a region-specific match level can be set only when the global match level is not Layout.
The right choice follows the risk: strict comparison for appearance that must remain stable, a reduced-sensitivity comparison when structure matters more than exact rendering, or an ignore mask only when the region is genuinely outside the check’s purpose.

Choose a region definition that survives your layout
Tools differ in how they identify regions. Applitools’ Playwright integration uses a locator for a component region and supports ignored regions. Percy Playwright documents selector-, XPath-, and custom coordinate-based ignore regions, along with per-region algorithms.

Applitools’ Regions Only page describes element-based targeting and says its workflow can follow responsive relocation and be auto-maintained; treat those as Applitools feature descriptions, not independent guarantees for every project or layout.

A practical workflow for focused visual checks
- Stabilize the scenario. Control data and viewport where possible, and decide how animation or time-dependent content should behave.
- Name the checkpoint. Choose a concise name that identifies the page or component in the report.
- Pick the smallest meaningful scope. Use a component locator for a component assertion; keep a whole-page checkpoint if surrounding layout is also under test.
- Classify changing regions by risk. Decide whether to stabilize, separately assert, compare at a reduced sensitivity, or ignore. Do not equate “dynamic” with “unimportant.”
- Review diffs before updating baselines. Applitools’ enhanced HTML report supports accepting a changed checkpoint as the new baseline or rejecting it as unintended. Accept only an intentional UI change; investigate unexpected differences.
- Revisit masks as the product evolves. An area that was once irrelevant can acquire content or become a critical control.
Common mistakes and fixes
- The test still fails on a dynamic element: check that the locator matches the rendered element and that the ignore option is attached to the checkpoint being evaluated. Prefer stable test data if the value matters.
- A mask hides a regression: reduce its scope, remove it, or replace it with a less strict regional comparison and a separate semantic assertion.
- A coordinate mask covers the wrong area after a layout change: use a DOM-based target where supported, or update and review the coordinates against the new layout.
- A component region is absent or misplaced: verify the locator and the page state at checkpoint time, including responsive viewport and any preceding navigation or loading steps.
- A baseline was updated for an unexpected diff: reject the change or investigate before accepting; acceptance makes that checkpoint the new baseline.
