That keeps the process independent of your SSH session and can relaunch it after qualifying failures—but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback or fix a bad stream key, failed network, ended YouTube event, or music-rights problem.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
When FFmpeg runs in an SSH shell, closing the session or losing the terminal can end the process. A system service instead runs under systemd, outside that interactive session. With the service enabled, systemd can start it during boot; with a restart policy, systemd can try to relaunch it after specified failures.

systemd supervises the local process, not the whole broadcast. A service can be active while FFmpeg is unable to send usable media, and a restarted FFmpeg process cannot repair an invalid key, unreadable input, blocked route, unsupported media settings, or an ended or invalid YouTube live event. If FFmpeg loops a file, a restart may also begin playback at the start rather than resume where it stopped.

Get the current YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current stream URL and stream key for the event. Use RTMPS rather than plain RTMP: YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance specifies RTMPS, and its stream troubleshooting guidance notes port 443 where needed. The YouTube API also documents RTMPS ingestion address fields at LiveStreams. Encoder interfaces vary: some accept the ingest URL and stream name separately, while others expect them concatenated. Follow the format required by your installed FFmpeg workflow and the current YouTube event details.

Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public script, screenshot, support request, or command output you plan to share. Store credentials in a configuration file readable only by the service account and authorized administrators.
Confirm the source and account permissions
- Choose the actual media source and whether it should loop. The example below is for one local file; a playlist or other input needs a command appropriate to that source.
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg build and the input’s codecs and container. The appropriate output codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval depend on the content, YouTube’s current ingest requirements, and that build. Do not treat an example command’s encoding values as universal recommendations.
- Create or select a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account for the service. Ensure it can read the media file, its parent directories, and the configuration file, but avoid granting broader access than necessary.
- Decide whether the host is suitable for continuous use: consider its availability, network reliability and upload capacity for the chosen stream, Linux administration needs, cost, and how you will recover access if it fails. This could be an existing Linux machine or a rented Linux VPS; no particular provider or hardware model is required by this setup.
Clear music rights before going live
YouTube’s Live Stream Terms and Conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” This applies to the rights needed for the live content, not merely ownership of an audio file.

YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder and warning; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Even licensed third-party music may be interrupted unless the owner adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Creator Music does not license live content. A playlist, attribution, purchased recording, or “no copyright intended” notice does not establish streaming rights. Rights depend on the particular song, recording, composition, territory, and use; confirm them with the relevant rights holders or a qualified rights adviser before broadcasting.

Configure FFmpeg as a system service
The following is a unit-file template, not a tested, drop-in recipe. Replace the account, paths, input, configuration method, and FFmpeg arguments for your system. The FFmpeg process must remain in the foreground so systemd can track it as the service’s main process.

1. Store stream configuration securely
For example, an administrator can create /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env for environment-based configuration, then restrict its ownership and permissions so the service account can read it and other users cannot. Do not put a real key into a public example or shared log. The exact variable names and how your FFmpeg invocation consumes them depend on your setup.
2. Create the unit file
Create a system-level unit such as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. This illustrative template uses a looped local file and an environment file; adapt it before use. The placeholders are not literal values:

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=YOUR_SERVICE_USER
WorkingDirectory=/PATH/TO/MEDIA
EnvironmentFile=/etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /PATH/TO/MEDIA/input.mp4 YOUR_ENCODING_OPTIONS -f flv YOUR_RTMPS_OUTPUT
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Wants= and After= express startup ordering around network-online.target; they do not prove that the host can reach YouTube when FFmpeg starts. The example’s -re -stream_loop -1 illustrates real-time reading and looping a file, while the FLV output is an example of an ingest workflow. Use the actual input, codecs, output format, and current YouTube ingest settings for your stream. Replace YOUR_RTMPS_OUTPUT using the URL/key format your FFmpeg command requires; do not assume all interfaces combine them the same way.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart after a non-zero exit, certain signals, qualifying operation timeouts, or watchdog timeouts. It does not restart a service that systemd intentionally stopped. A RestartSec delay avoids an immediate retry loop; choose a delay that suits the host and network rather than copying the example blindly. Repeated failures can trigger systemd start-rate limiting and leave the unit failed until the issue is addressed and it is started again.
3. Load, enable, and start the service
- After saving the unit, reload systemd’s unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service for future boots and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Check its local state:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Inspect recent service output if it did not start or later stopped:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager.
These commands use the example unit name. Substitute the name you actually created. Before relying on boot startup, confirm the service account can read the file and configuration and that FFmpeg is installed at the executable path in ExecStart.
Verify the stream on both sides
- Check systemd and the journal. Confirm the unit is active, then inspect recent journal entries for input-read errors, FFmpeg exits, or connection failures. A running unit only confirms the service process state.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the event’s stream preview and health information to confirm YouTube is receiving usable media. Do not infer healthy ingest from
systemctlstatus alone. - Confirm the ingest details if it will not connect. Recheck that the RTMPS URL and stream key are current for the event, that the endpoint and path are correct, and that the host can reach the required port. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance mentions port 443 where needed.
- Test boot recovery deliberately. If safe for the event, restart the host and check that the enabled unit starts and YouTube receives media again. A service being enabled does not by itself validate the input, credentials, network, or event.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The stream stops when SSH closes | FFmpeg was launched from the interactive shell rather than as the system service. | Start the system-level unit with systemctl, and confirm its main process is FFmpeg running in the foreground. |
| The service fails immediately | Bad unit syntax, incorrect executable or media path, missing permissions, or an FFmpeg/input error. | Read systemctl status and the unit’s journal entries. Check the executable path, working directory, input path, configuration-file permissions, and service-account access. |
| FFmpeg runs but YouTube does not show a healthy stream | Invalid or stale stream URL/key, wrong endpoint format, blocked network route, or unsuitable media settings. | Verify the current RTMPS details in Live Control Room, the URL/key formatting expected by the command, network reachability, and the event’s stream preview and health information. |
| Retries stop after several failures | Start-rate limiting may have left the repeatedly failing unit in a failed state. | Inspect the journal and unit’s restart and start-limit settings. Fix the underlying error before starting it again; increasing retry frequency will not repair a persistent cause. |
| The service restarts, but the broadcast still fails | systemd can restart the process but cannot repair an invalid key, missing input, unsupported settings, failed network path, or ended/invalid event. | Use journal entries to diagnose FFmpeg and the Live Control Room to diagnose ingest/event health. Correct the underlying issue, then verify reception again. |
| The restarted stream begins at the start of the file | A looped file’s new FFmpeg process may begin reading from its beginning. | Decide whether that content discontinuity is acceptable for the broadcast and adjust the playback design if it is not. |
| A music stream is interrupted despite a running service | YouTube may have identified third-party content, or the necessary rights/allowlisting may not be in place. | Check YouTube’s notice and resolve rights with the relevant rights holders. Where applicable, ask the owner about channel allowlisting; a process restart does not resolve a rights restriction. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a Linux host and systemd service, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded video, not a live camera feed. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. You remain responsible for the rights to music you stream.
