Streamlabs now calls its AI game-highlighting feature Replay; it was formerly called Streamlabs Highlighter. To capture clips manually while streaming in Streamlabs Desktop, set a hotkey and replay duration in Highlighter, go live, then press the hotkey when you want to save a moment. For automatic gameplay capture, enable Auto Record in Replay, complete the Recorder Extension prompt if it appears, and launch a supported game. In either workflow, review and edit the clips afterward, then export your highlight reel.
Choose the right Streamlabs workflow
Streamlabs documents two related workflows, but they are not interchangeable. The Desktop help guide describes manual hotkey capture through the Highlighter tab. Replay’s newer workflow records gameplay in the background and identifies events automatically when the game is supported. Menu labels may vary by installed app version, so use the closest matching labels in your build.

| Workflow | How moments are captured | What to set up | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter | You press a hotkey to save a replay while streaming. | A hotkey and replay duration. | Choosing exactly when to clip, including when automatic detection is unavailable. |
| Replay Auto Record | Replay records gameplay and detects supported in-game events. | Auto Record and, if prompted, the Recorder Extension. | Capturing potential highlights without pressing a clip hotkey for each moment. |
Streamlabs describes Replay as free. Its supported-games list and advertised system requirements can change; check the current Streamlabs Replay and Highlighter page before relying on support for a particular game or device.
Capture clips manually in Streamlabs Desktop
This is the documented option when you want to mark moments yourself. Configure it before starting your broadcast so you do not have to interrupt play to find the controls.

- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Open Highlighter. In Streamlabs Desktop, select the Highlighter tab from the left navigation panel.
- Choose a hotkey and replay duration. Set a key combination that is easy to press during play but unlikely to conflict with a game control. Set how much footage the replay should cover. Streamlabs’ guide does not prescribe a universal duration; choose one that fits the moments you want to retain.
- Go live and save moments. Start your stream as usual. When something worth clipping happens, press the configured hotkey. Repeat whenever you want to capture another replay.
- Return to Highlighter after the session. Open the tab again to find the clips collected during the stream.
- Edit the reel. You can trim clips by adjusting their edges, reorder them, include or disable individual clips, or delete clips. The editor also supports changing transitions and their length, adding an intro or outro, and adding background music.
- Preview and export. Preview the compilation, make any final edits, choose Export, and select the export settings offered in your installed version.
- Upload the downloaded reel. Share the exported video on the social platform you choose. Confirm that its aspect ratio, duration, and other requirements suit that destination.
For the current documented sequence and interface details, see Streamlabs’ Desktop Highlighter guide.
Capture gameplay automatically with Replay
Replay’s automatic workflow detects gameplay events rather than relying on a hotkey for every clip. Automatic event detection is game-dependent: first check Streamlabs’ current supported-game list. Streamlabs identifies events such as kills or eliminations, deaths, victories, defeats, and other game events, but that does not mean every event is detected in every game.

- Download and open Replay. Install the current Replay app, launch it, and accept its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
- Enable Auto Record. Turn on Auto Record during first-run setup.
- Complete the Recorder Extension prompt if it appears. Install the extension when prompted, then choose Activate Auto Record.
- Launch a supported game and play. Replay is intended to record in the background and log gameplay highlights for later review. Streamlabs does not promise that automatic detection works for unsupported titles, so use manual Desktop hotkey capture if automatic game-event capture is not available for your game.
- Review the session in Replay. After playing, return to Replay to trim, edit, compile, and rearrange the captured clips.
- Export or share the finished video. Replay’s guide describes horizontal and vertical editing, subtitles, music, importing existing footage, and sharing. It lists YouTube, Discord, and a phone as destinations; confirm which destinations and options are available in your current app.
Streamlabs introduced Replay as its AI game highlighter in December 2024 and updated its introduction on September 22, 2026. For the current setup flow and feature context, consult Streamlabs’ Replay introduction and its Replay guide.
Edit for the platform where you will share
Decide where the reel will be posted before finishing the edit. Replay’s guide describes horizontal and vertical formats, so choose the format that suits the destination and check the result in preview. Keep the original clips available until you have confirmed that the exported reel plays correctly and contains the moments you intended.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The automatic workflow does not create game highlights
Check whether the game appears on Streamlabs’ current supported-games list. Automatic event detection is not established for every game. If the title is unsupported, use the Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter hotkey workflow to choose moments manually.
Replay asks for the Recorder Extension
Follow the in-app prompt to install the extension, then select Activate Auto Record. The documented setup includes this step only if Replay prompts for it.

A manual clip is missing
Confirm that you configured the hotkey and replay duration in the Highlighter tab before going live, and that you pressed the configured key during the session. Return to the Highlighter tab after the stream to access the collected clips.
