Playwright has no universal “stealth mode” switch. For authorized testing, first choose the browser and headless or headed mode that match the application you are testing; add a third-party stealth package only when you have a legitimate test need and understand its limits. Reducing a few detectable signals does not make automation undetectable or guarantee access to a site.
Start with authorization and a test goal
Use browser automation against a site you own, a staging environment, or a target for which you have explicit authorization. If a site blocks an authorized QA or research session, ask its operator for test access or use an approved API. Treating a bot challenge or access control as something to evade is not a dependable test configuration, and permission depends on the applicable terms, circumstances, and jurisdiction.

For ordinary end-to-end tests, begin with Playwright’s documented browser and launch options. “Stealth mode” usually refers to third-party packages or custom configuration, not a standard Playwright setting. No plugin should be assumed to bypass a particular bot-management service.
Choose the browser that matches the test
Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, as well as branded Chrome and Edge channels. Choose based on the application’s supported browsers and the purpose of the run: use the target engine for compatibility testing, or a public stable browser release for regression coverage. Playwright generally uses open-source Chromium by default. Its browser guide describes support for stable and beta channels for branded Chrome and Edge. Playwright’s browser guide explains browser selection and installation.

Choose headless or headed execution deliberately
Playwright Test runs headless by default. Use --headed to show the browser when visual debugging is useful. Chromium’s default headless shell and its newer headless mode are different configurations; Playwright enables the newer mode with the chromium channel. The guide cites Google Chrome’s description of the newer mode as “the real Chrome browser” and says it is more authentic, reliable, and feature-rich in the context of high-accuracy end-to-end and extension testing. That is a reason to select it when it matches your test goal, not a promise of avoiding detection.
# Run Playwright Test with the default headless configuration
npx playwright test
# Show the browser window for visual debugging
npx playwright test --headed
# Use the newer Chromium headless mode via the chromium channel
# Configure the project's browser use.channel option as "chromium".
The channel example is a configuration choice; exact setup depends on whether you use Playwright Test or the library directly. Consult the current browser guide for the supported configuration in your installed version.

When a third-party stealth package may fit
The Python package playwright-stealth documents applying its configuration to Playwright pages or contexts. Its PyPI page identifies version 2.0.0 and notes breaking changes in its major-version history, so check the current documentation before adopting an example. The project cautions: “Don’t expect this to bypass anything but the simplest of bot detection methods.” This is the package author’s limitation, not an independent guarantee about every detection system.

Install and use the documented async pattern
pip install playwright playwright-stealth
import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
from playwright_stealth import Stealth
async def main():
async with Stealth().use_async(async_playwright()) as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page()
await page.goto("https://example.com")
print(await page.title())
await browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
This follows the package’s documented pattern for wrapping an async Playwright session. The example has not been independently executed here; verify current package instructions and imports for the version you install.

- [Forward & Reverse] It can not only change rotation direction by pressing button, but also by potentiometer. It is also automatically change the direction through the selected working mode to achieve multi-scene and multi-application
- [4 Control Mode] In addition to its built-in parameters work mode,it can also control by external buttons or others driver or UART commands
- [9 Work States] Built-in 9 default workflow programs, covering most applications, to meet the needs of different scenarios.Forward/Reverse/Delay/Loop/Self-locking/No-lock/Rotating speed and so on
- [HD LCD Display] The HD LCD can clearly display the speed/delay/cycle times, making it easier to browse and set various parameters. Realize high-precision control of the motor. Parameters support memory function that will not be lost
Apply configuration to a context
The package also documents applying stealth to an entire context. Use the package’s current API reference for the exact method and options: the project notes major-version breaking changes, so do not copy a context example from older articles without checking it against your installed release.
What detection research does—and does not—show
A 2026 University of Bamberg preprint reports results from 10,000 websites tested across four browser configurations, for 40,000 page visits. It found a 15% soft-block rate for Chromium headless and 7% for its other tested configurations. The authors attributed 82% of observed blocks to bot detection, comprising 59% vendor-confirmed and 23% inferred cases, and identified Cloudflare and Akamai among providers with high blocking rates in their setup. These are bounded study findings, not universal rates, and the study did not test the playwright-stealth package. The authors’ arXiv preprint record should be consulted for the paper and its methods.

- No App Required: Simply connect your AC voltage to the input terminal, and the device’s Wi-Fi network (starting with “LC..”) will appear. Connect your mobile device to the controller’s Wi-Fi network, open your web browser, and enter the controller’s IP address to access the interface. For detailed instructions, refer to the included manual or view the manual in the image gallery.
- Please refer to the wiring instructions in the included manual before making any connections. The wiring must follow the specified configuration exactly to ensure proper system functionality. - Flexible Connectivity and Remote Management:Supports both direct Wi-Fi access for quick setup and integration with existing network systems. Easily manage and control your lighting remotely, from virtually anywhere.
- Robust and Reliable Operation: Equipped with high-quality SMD relays, each channel supports up to 4A for dependable control of AC-powered lighting. Designed to operate across a wide voltage range from 110V to 250V, ensuring stable performance in various environments.
- Versatile Manual and Automated Controls: Offers flexible control options, including manual operation and programmable sequences. Easily manage individual lights or all channels together, allowing for customized lighting behavior to match your specific requirements.
A separate 2026 preprint examined AI-agent detection in a controlled benchmark. It reports that behavioral features including missing raw pointer-move and wheel-delta streams remained informative after trajectory manipulation. The authors report 100% observed agent recall for two features at each evasion level in that benchmark, with agent precision of 0.994. Those are benchmark results, not proof that every website can identify every automation stack, nor that every Playwright session exposes the same signals. See the authors’ arXiv preprint record for the study’s scope.

- Update Playwright: use the version your project intends to test and record it with the run.
- Install matching browser binaries after an update: run
npx playwright installso the browsers correspond to the installed Playwright release. - Record the configuration: note the Playwright version, browser engine or channel, headed/headless mode, and relevant test settings alongside results.
- Keep the test representative: pin versions for repeatability, but select the browser and mode that correspond to the authorized environment you are trying to validate.
Playwright’s browser documentation covers browser installation and version management.
Common problems and fixes
- The browser binary is missing after an update: install the browser binaries again with
npx playwright install. - A package example fails with an import or method error: check the installed playwright-stealth version against its current PyPI documentation; major versions may have breaking changes.
- The browser still receives a block or challenge: a stealth package is not a general bypass. For authorized work, request allowlisting or test credentials from the site owner, or use an approved API.
- A run behaves differently in CI and locally: compare engine, channel, headless/headed mode, Playwright version, and installed browser binaries; record those values before treating the result as a product regression.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a website screenshot rather than an end-to-end browser test, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
