For most Mac users, Apple Terminal and its OpenSSH workflow are the simplest way to connect to a server. Use PuTTY installed through Homebrew if you specifically need PuTTY tools or depend on a PuTTY-based workflow; choose a graphical SSH client when saved connections, tabs, split views, or built-in file transfer would help. Homebrew is an installer and package manager—not a separate SSH protocol or a GUI client.
Does PuTTY have a Mac version?
The PuTTY project FAQ says that, as of 2026, its core team does not expect to finish a Mac version, following earlier port attempts and obstacles. That is the project FAQ’s assessment, not a claim that PuTTY cannot be used on macOS: Homebrew packages PuTTY for Mac. The distinction is that installing the package does not establish that the upstream project has released a finished native Mac GUI.

Use OpenSSH from Terminal for ordinary connections
Apple’s Terminal supports remote connections using SSH and SFTP, among other protocols. For a basic SSH session, open Terminal and run ssh username@server-address, replacing the example values with your account name and server hostname or address. OpenSSH also supports configuration for repeatable connections and command-line workflows; consult the OpenSSH manual pages for client options and configuration details.

Apple’s guide, Connect to servers in Terminal on Mac, explains the built-in remote-connection workflow. If you only need to reach a server and run commands, start there before installing another application.
Install PuTTY with Homebrew when you need PuTTY
If your workflow relies on PuTTY or another tool in its suite, Homebrew currently provides the package with brew install putty. The formula lists macOS bottles and command-line and GUI-related binaries. Its live page reported version 0.85 when checked on October 7, 2026; version and available macOS bottles can change, so confirm the current formula before installing.

Homebrew itself is a package manager. Its PuTTY formula is one way to install the software on macOS, not a different SSH protocol. Homebrew’s installation guidance says its default prefix is /opt/homebrew on Apple Silicon Macs and /usr/local on Intel Macs. macOS requirements and support tiers vary by hardware and can change; check the Homebrew installation documentation for the current support matrix.

Choose a GUI client for connection-management features
A graphical client is useful when managing connections is the problem—not merely opening an SSH session. Depending on the app and plan, features may include saved hosts, tabs, split views, key or agent workflows, and integrated SFTP. Compare the specific capabilities you need, including whether the app can use or import your OpenSSH configuration and whether those features are plan-dependent.
The Termius for Mac listing describes tabs, split view, and SFTP, with some capabilities assigned to different tiers; do not assume every listed feature is included in a free tier. SecureCRT for macOS is another vendor-described SSH client. Check each vendor’s current feature and platform information when choosing.

Account for PATH when a GUI app needs Homebrew tools
Homebrew notes that macOS GUI apps do not inherit its installation prefix in PATH by default. This matters when a GUI client tries to launch a Homebrew-installed executable and cannot find it. If that happens, check the particular app’s integration instructions and Homebrew’s FAQ; avoid changing a global PATH setting unless you know the app requires it and understand the effect.
