Scan one item at a time, confirm it appears on the screen, then move it to the bagging area. Before paying, review the item list and total; if anything is missing, repeated, unexpected, or unclear, stop and ask an attendant to fix it. Check your receipt before leaving the lane. This routine helps catch mistakes, but no universal safeguard can guarantee that another shopper’s item will never appear in a transaction.
Before you start: keep your items separate
Keep the items you are buying together rather than mixing them with another shopper’s. At the register, make space for your purchases and personal belongings so it is easier to tell which items you have scanned and bagged. This is a practical way to stay organized, not a feature that every checkout system enforces.

Scan one item and verify it before moving on
- Take one item and scan its barcode.
- Check the register display for the expected item and price before scanning the next one.
- Once it appears correctly, move the item to the bagging area.
Erie County’s Department of Consumer Protection advises shoppers to “Watch as the price of the item shows on the checkout register.” Georgia’s Attorney General likewise recommends watching the display and bringing discrepancies to an attendant’s attention: Georgia price-scanning guidance and Erie County scanner-accuracy guidance.
If an item will not scan or the screen shows something unexpected
Pause rather than guessing, scanning the same item repeatedly, or continuing with an unclear prompt. Ask an attendant to help and confirm that the item is represented correctly before moving on. Retailer instructions illustrate why it is worth asking: ASDA directs Scan and Go users with scanning difficulties to staff at the payment area, while Walmart’s Scan & Go terms direct users who cannot scan an item to consult an associate so the cart or receipt reflects all items. These are retailer-specific examples, not identical procedures for every store: ASDA Scan and Go terms and Walmart Scan & Go terms.

Follow the store’s instructions for produce
Loose produce may not follow the same workflow as packaged goods. Do not guess at a produce code, weight, or price. Follow the prompts on the machine and ask an attendant if you are unsure. ASDA says loose produce is generally weighed and labeled in the produce area, although some stores allow weighing at self-checkout. Walmart says some produce prices remain estimates until weight or count is confirmed. Use the process for the store you are visiting, not another retailer’s instructions: ASDA Scan and Go terms and Walmart Scan & Go terms.
Review the list and total before you pay
Before selecting a payment method, look through the on-screen items and check the total. Watch for a missing item, a repeated entry, or an item you did not select. If anything looks wrong, call an attendant and ask for the transaction to be corrected before paying. This check is useful, but checkout systems differ and the cited guidance does not promise a universal technical barrier against another shopper’s item appearing in your transaction.

Check your receipt before leaving the lane
After payment, compare the receipt with your purchases while you are still at the checkout. Georgia’s Attorney General recommends checking the receipt before leaving the store, preferably before leaving the lane. Start by showing the receipt to the store attendant or customer service desk. If the concern is a shelf-price mismatch, show the shelf label or advertisement too; Georgia’s guidance recommends bringing store advertising or pricing notes to help verify an advertised price. If the store does not resolve the issue, the relevant consumer-protection or weights-and-measures office may be able to explain local options.

Do not assume an incorrect scan automatically entitles you to a free or discounted item. Remedies depend on where the store is located and on the circumstances. Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says its guidance does not require a business to provide an item free or at a discount for an incorrect scan, though a store may have its own policy: Florida scanner price-accuracy guidance. Connecticut describes a limited rule for qualifying consumer commodities advertised for at least seven days, where the consumer asks for the item free: Connecticut price-scanning guidance. Erie County describes its own local process, including a possible super refund at qualifying stores: Erie County scanner-accuracy guidance. These local rules are not a single nationwide remedy.
