Secret Chats add end-to-end encryption and a self-destruct timer, but they are tied to the device where you start them and do not sync through Telegram Cloud.
Start a Secret Chat
- Open the profile of the person you want to message.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Start Secret Chat.
This is the route in Telegram’s official FAQ. Menu labels or locations can vary by app version and platform.

What Secret Chat changes
Telegram says Secret Chat messages use end-to-end encryption, so only the participants’ devices are intended to read them. Telegram also says messages cannot be forwarded from Secret Chats. Deleting a message on one side orders the other participant’s app to delete it too.

Unlike ordinary cloud chats, a Secret Chat is specific to the device where it was created and is not stored in Telegram Cloud. It will not appear in your Telegram history on another device, and Telegram says logging out removes Secret Chats from that device. Consider this before logging out, reinstalling the app, or changing devices.

Set a self-destruct timer
- Open the Secret Chat and tap the clock icon. Telegram’s FAQ places it in the input field on iOS and in the top bar on Android.
- Choose the time limit you want.
- Send a message. Its countdown begins when the recipient sees it, indicated in Telegram’s FAQ by two check marks. When the timer expires, Telegram says the message disappears from both devices.
The timer affects only messages sent after you set it; it does not apply retroactively to earlier messages. Telegram’s FAQ describes the Secret Chat timer as available for all Secret Chat messages. In private cloud chats, its FAQ says the timer is available for media; the separate auto-delete feature for regular chats counts from when a message is sent, not when the recipient sees it. Choose based on what matters for the conversation: Secret Chat’s device-specific protections and controls, or Cloud Chat’s cross-device access.

What Secret Chat cannot guarantee
A timer does not prevent a recipient from saving what they see outside Telegram. Telegram cautions that screenshot detection is not bulletproof on some systems, notifications may be bypassed, and someone can photograph the screen with another device. Share sensitive information only with people you trust.
Security also depends on the device. Telegram warns that someone with physical or root access to a device may be able to access information on it. Its FAQ recommends a strong app passcode and 2-Step Verification for users concerned about personal security. Telegram’s descriptions of these protections are vendor statements, not an independent security audit.

Telegram’s privacy policy also describes expiry as instructing both devices to delete Secret Chat messages.
