To pay in a store with Samsung Pay, open Samsung Wallet, choose a card, tap Pay, authenticate, then hold the back of your phone near the contactless reader and follow the register’s prompts. The payment works only when your device, card, country and the terminal are supported.
How to pay with Samsung Pay in a store
- Open Samsung Wallet. At checkout, open the app and select the card you want from Quick Access. On supported setups, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open Quick Access.
- Tap Pay and authenticate. Use the authentication method available on your device, such as a PIN or fingerprint.
- Present your phone. Hold the back of the phone near the terminal’s contactless reader. If the register asks for another action, follow its instructions.
Samsung’s US support instructions describe Samsung Pay within Samsung Wallet. The app’s screens and available settings can differ by device, software version and wireless provider. Samsung’s guide to paying with Samsung Wallet provides device-specific examples.

Check NFC and the default payment service
For contactless payments, make sure NFC is enabled. On Samsung’s US instructions, the path is Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payment > Contactless payments. Select Samsung Pay as the default service if it is not already selected. Menu names and locations can vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s instructions for NFC and contactless payments.
Will Samsung Pay work at this terminal?
The reader must support a payment method available to Samsung Wallet on your specific device and in your country. Look for the contactless-payment symbol or ask the cashier whether the terminal accepts contactless payments. Samsung says Wallet will not work with readers that support neither NFC nor MST; examples where unsupported readers are commonly found include gas pumps, some transit readers and vending machines. Do not assume your phone supports MST (magnetic secure transmission). Samsung states that MST support and service coverage vary by country, device and market. Confirm the exact Galaxy model and local Samsung Wallet availability rather than relying on older descriptions of Samsung Pay. Samsung’s Samsung Wallet information describes service availability.
Your card issuer also determines which cards can be registered and may require verification. Check the Samsung Wallet information for your country and confirm eligibility with the issuer. Samsung’s Malaysia FAQ describes card registration and payment technologies for that market; its terms should not be treated as universal issuer rules.

Paying with a Galaxy watch
If Samsung Wallet is available and configured on your compatible watch, press and hold the Back button, choose a card, then hold the watch near the NFC reader. Samsung advises placing the watch within one inch of the terminal if the payment is not registering. Watch availability and setup depend on the device and market; check Samsung’s payment instructions and local availability details.

- Check NFC and the default service. Verify NFC is on and Samsung Pay is selected for contactless payments using Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payment > Contactless payments, if that path is available on your device. Samsung’s troubleshooting steps cover this check.
- Reposition the phone. Find the terminal’s contactless reader and hold the back of the phone near it. The NFC and MST reader positions may differ.
- Remove the case temporarily. A thick or problematic case can interfere with the signal. Take it off and try again.
- Address a network error. Check Wi-Fi or mobile data. If the issue continues, restart the phone and try again.
- Distinguish a read from a decline. If the terminal received the payment information but declined the transaction, check the card account and contact the issuer as needed. Samsung notes that processing after payment information reaches the terminal is between the merchant and card network.

Returns, digital card numbers and gift cards
Keep the store receipt and locate the digital card number associated with the purchase. Some merchants may ask you to present your phone to an NFC reader to process a refund.
The digital card number can change if you switch devices or remove and register the card again. Samsung says it does not retain the old number for retrieval. If a merchant cannot process a return with the new number, ask whether it can handle the refund as it would after a physical card replacement; contact the issuer if needed. Samsung Wallet can also store gift cards, but a cashier may need the gift-card number or barcode rather than a tap payment. Check what the store accepts before relying on the phone at checkout.
Using Samsung Pay outside the United States
Availability, eligible devices, cards and terminal support differ by country. Samsung’s US guidance says that abroad, Wallet use follows acceptance of the underlying physical card and the issuer’s terms. Rewards or promotions may not apply, and registering a card while traveling may require contacting the issuer. These are general US support instructions, not a guarantee for every card or destination. Check the issuer’s terms and local Samsung Wallet information before traveling.
