How to Use Samsung Galaxy Modes and Routines, Edge Panels, and Secure Folder

Learn how Galaxy Modes and Routines, Edge panels, and Secure Folder differ—and how to set up each feature on supported Samsung phones.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung Galaxy’s Modes and Routines, Edge panels, and Secure Folder solve different problems: modes apply a chosen set of settings for a situation, routines automate actions when conditions are met, Edge panels put selected shortcuts within reach, and Secure Folder keeps selected apps and content behind a separate lock. Their availability and menu names vary by model and software version, so use the paths below as a guide and search Settings if a label differs.

Which Galaxy feature should you use?

Feature Best for How it starts or opens
Modes Applying a set of contextual settings, such as focus-related changes Manually or automatically, depending on how the mode is configured; configured modes are also accessible from Quick Settings
Routines Automating actions when a condition is met A trigger you choose in the routine’s “If” section
Edge panels Quick access to selected apps and tools Swipe the Edge panel handle on the screen edge
Secure Folder Keeping selected apps and private content in a separate protected space Open Secure Folder and unlock it with its configured passcode or biometric method

These are complementary features rather than alternatives. A mode changes a device’s configuration for a context; a routine performs chosen actions in response to a condition. Edge panels are a shortcut surface, while Secure Folder is a separately locked area for content you choose to place there.

How do I set up Modes and Routines on my Samsung Galaxy?

On supported software, open Settings > Modes and Routines. The screen has separate tabs for Modes and Routines. Depending on your Galaxy’s Android version, software, carrier, and app version, the label or route may differ.

Create a routine on a Samsung phone

  1. Open Settings > Modes and Routines, then select the Routines tab.
  2. Tap Add.
  3. Under If, choose the condition that should trigger the routine.
  4. Under Then, choose the action or actions the phone should perform.
  5. Review the choices and save the routine. To change it later, return to the Routines tab and select the routine to edit.

You can also start with a suggested routine and customize its conditions or actions. The “If” condition is the trigger; “Then” describes what the phone does when that trigger is met.

Set up a mode

  1. In Settings > Modes and Routines, open the Modes tab.
  2. Select a preset mode and follow the on-screen setup, or choose the option to create a custom mode.
  3. For a custom mode, enter a name and choose a color and icon.
  4. Set any conditions you want for automatic activation, then choose the focus-related actions you want the mode to apply, such as Do not disturb or restricting app use.
  5. Save the mode. To activate a configured mode manually, open Quick Settings and tap Modes; the exact Quick Settings layout can vary.

If the Modes and Routines menu is missing

Samsung’s Ireland guide says Routines are under Settings > Modes and Routines on Android 13 and Android 14, while Android 11 and Android 12 use the Bixby Routines app. This is version guidance, not a guarantee for every model. Search Settings for “Modes,” “Routines,” or “Bixby Routines” if the route does not match your phone. See Samsung’s Routines instructions and its US guide to Bixby Routines.

How do I turn on Edge panels?

  1. Open Settings > Display > Edge panels.
  2. Switch Edge panels on.
  3. Open the panel selection area and select the panels you want. Samsung says the interface can allow up to ten panels to be selected.
  4. Open the handle settings to adjust the handle’s position, size, color, and transparency.
  5. Swipe the handle from the screen edge to open a panel.

How do I add apps to the Edge panel?

In the Edge panels settings, select the Apps panel and edit its contents. Add or remove apps and reorder them to suit how you use the panel. To remove Edge panels entirely, return to Settings > Display > Edge panels and switch the feature off.

How do I set up Secure Folder on my Galaxy?

  1. Open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder. If the labels differ, search Settings for “Secure Folder.”
  2. Follow the prompts to set it up and choose a passcode, password, pattern, or supported biometric lock.
  3. Move or add the apps and private content you want to keep in Secure Folder.
  4. In Secure Folder settings, choose an automatic locking preference, or use Lock and exit when you want to close and lock it manually.

Secure Folder is a protected space for selected files, apps, photos, and other private content; its lock is separate from simply hiding an item in a regular app. Samsung’s Canada guide says Lock and exit may require the latest One UI 8 version on the device described by those instructions, and notes that screens and settings can vary by carrier and software version. See Samsung’s Secure Folder guide.

Choose Secure Folder recovery deliberately

During setup, check whether Reset with Samsung account is enabled for the security method you choose. Samsung warns that if this recovery option was not enabled, a forgotten PIN, password, or pattern may not be recoverable; removing and recreating Secure Folder may be the only option. Keep the credentials you set somewhere safe.

Why might the instructions look different on your phone?

Samsung’s support pages caution that feature availability, names, and screen layouts can depend on the Galaxy model, carrier, software version, and app version. Edge panels may be absent on some devices, and Modes and Routines has different routes on some Android versions. If a listed path does not appear, use Settings search for the feature name and check that your device supports it.
