What you need to know before setting up DeX for games
Samsung DeX places supported apps in a desktop-style interface on an external display. It can make a phone or tablet more comfortable to use from a couch or desk, but the game is still an Android app running on the Galaxy device. DeX does not turn a mobile game into a PC game, add controller support to a title, or guarantee that the app will use the whole display.

Compatibility is model- and connection-specific. Samsung maintains separate support information for wired DeX, wireless DeX, and DeX for PC, so support for one route does not establish support for another. Check Samsung’s current US support page, “Use the Samsung DeX screen on your Galaxy phone or tablet,” for your exact device before buying an adapter or relying on a wireless display. The page was accessed October 13, 2026, and Samsung’s coverage can change as devices and software are updated.
Examples of compatibility caveats
Samsung’s current US list says the Z Flip7 FE and previous Z Flip models are not compatible with DeX on an external TV or monitor using a DeX or HDMI cable, DeX for PC, or wireless DeX with a TV or monitor. The Galaxy Tab S10 FE and Tab S9 FE series are listed as lacking HDMI output and not supporting Wireless DeX. These examples do not replace checking the live list: they illustrate why a product family name or the presence of USB-C alone is not enough to establish support.

Also distinguish a monitor or TV setup from DeX for PC. A monitor or TV is the external gaming display in the setup described here. DeX for PC instead opens a DeX environment on a Windows computer, and Samsung says that route is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later.

For a game where responsive input matters, wired display output is the simpler route to set up and assess because it avoids depending on a wireless display connection. That is a practical setup choice, not a claim that wired DeX has a measured latency advantage: Samsung’s reviewed support material does not publish comparative DeX gaming latency tests. A wireless connection may suit casual play if your particular display works well, but test it with the game you intend to play rather than assuming it will feel identical to a wired setup.
For a basic wired setup, the essential pieces are the supported Galaxy device, a compatible USB-C to HDMI adapter or cable, and an HDMI display. If the adapter does not have an HDMI lead built in, you will also need an HDMI cable to connect it to the screen. Samsung documents the standard USB-C to HDMI adapter route, but does not establish that every adapter works with every Galaxy model. Check the device and adapter details before purchase; there is no universal price or required accessory bundle specified by Samsung’s guidance.
Set up a wired gaming display
- Confirm wired DeX support. Find your exact phone or tablet model on Samsung’s current DeX support information and check the wired or HDMI route. Do this before buying an adapter; a USB-C port by itself does not establish that the device supports DeX video output.
- Connect the display. Plug a compatible USB-C to HDMI adapter or cable into the Galaxy device, then connect it to the HDMI monitor or TV. Samsung says a standard USB-C to HDMI adapter can start DeX. If you need a separate HDMI cable, connect it between the adapter and the display.
- Start DeX on the external screen. Accept the DeX prompt if it appears. If the external display shows a mirrored phone screen instead, open the notification or quick settings panel and select Samsung DeX.
- Connect your controller if the game supports one. Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller with the Galaxy device in its Bluetooth settings. Samsung names an Xbox controller as one option for Galaxy gaming, but compatibility with the device does not mean every game accepts controller input.
- Open the game and check its behavior. Confirm that the picture appears on the external display, the game opens in a usable size, and the controller’s inputs work in that title. Test before relying on the setup for a longer session.
Save work before disconnecting the HDMI cable. Samsung warns that DeX restarts when the HDMI cable is removed, so treat unplugging it as a session interruption rather than a seamless way to switch displays.
Set up wireless DeX
- Check both ends of the connection. Verify that the exact Galaxy model supports wireless DeX and that the TV or monitor supports the required wireless display connection. Samsung identifies compatible Samsung TVs and Smart Monitors, as well as other Miracast devices, as possible displays.
- Open DeX’s wireless connection controls. Select the supported display from the wireless DeX connection menu on the Galaxy device. Menu wording and placement may vary with device software.
- Pair the controller with the Galaxy device. Use the device’s Bluetooth settings and check that the particular game recognizes controller input.
- Test the game on that display. Check image stability, controls, and whether the game fits the display as expected. Samsung says wireless performance depends on the TV and is not guaranteed for every compatible third-party TV or dongle.
Wireless compatibility is not a promise of consistent gaming responsiveness. Samsung’s support guidance gives no DeX-specific gaming latency figure or comparison, so there is no evidence-based number to use when predicting how a particular TV and game will feel.

Choose and test a controller
A Bluetooth controller is useful when the game is designed for gamepad input; it is not required for a title that plays well with touch controls. Samsung’s “A Galaxy for gaming” guidance names an Xbox controller as an option and discusses Galaxy gaming on an external display through DeX. The key compatibility question is still whether the individual game supports a controller.
Check input before you commit to a game
- Pair the controller to the Galaxy device through Bluetooth settings, then open the game and test its menus as well as gameplay.
- Check whether buttons and sticks perform the actions you expect. A controller can be connected to the device without a particular game using it.
- If the title does not respond to the controller, try its touch controls if they remain practical on the external display. DeX does not add controller support.
- Do not assume a game’s availability on Android, or its ability to open in DeX, means it was designed for external-display play or gamepad input.
Samsung also describes Xbox Game Pass as an option for streaming games to a Galaxy phone with a compatible controller. That is a cloud-gaming pathway, not proof that every Game Pass title is available in every region or that streaming performance will be suitable on a particular connection. Availability, catalog, subscription conditions, and performance vary by service and region; check the current terms for your location.

DeX provides a desktop-style environment, but Android apps determine much of their own display behavior. Samsung Developer’s “How Samsung DeX works” FAQ says apps that do not meet Android multi-window requirements may open in a fixed-size mobile window rather than a freely resizable desktop window. That guidance describes app behavior generally; it is not a game-by-game compatibility list.
When you launch a title, check whether it uses the external display in a useful way, whether it fills or only partly occupies the available screen, and whether its controls remain usable. A fixed-size window may be an app limitation rather than a connection failure. Conversely, seeing DeX on the monitor does not establish that the game itself supports a desktop-like layout.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The display shows the phone screen instead of DeX
Open the notification or quick settings panel on the Galaxy device and select Samsung DeX. Samsung lists this as the way to switch when a connected external display starts in screen-mirroring mode.

Nothing appears over the wired connection
Recheck the exact device against Samsung’s wired DeX or HDMI support information, then verify that the adapter or cable and HDMI display are compatible and connected. A standard USB-C to HDMI adapter is the route Samsung documents, but adapter support can vary. Do not infer wired display support just from the shape of the phone’s port.
The wireless display is unreliable
Confirm that the device and display support the wireless DeX route and that the display is a compatible Samsung TV or Smart Monitor, or a Miracast-capable device. Samsung cautions that wireless performance varies by TV and is not guaranteed with all third-party TVs or dongles. If the connection does not behave well for the game, try a supported wired setup rather than expecting a universal wireless fix.
The game opens in a small or fixed-size window
Samsung’s Developer FAQ explains that apps that do not meet Android multi-window standards may not be freely resizable. Test the title as it is; the DeX desktop interface cannot guarantee that an app will adapt to the external display.
The controller connects but the game ignores it
Confirm that the game supports controller input. Samsung’s controller guidance establishes that compatible Bluetooth controllers can be used with Galaxy games, not that each game supports them. Try the game’s touch controls if available, or choose a title with confirmed controller support.
What DeX does—and does not—establish about gaming performance
Samsung’s reviewed official material does not provide independent comparative gaming benchmarks for DeX, including measured frame rates, input latency, or a comparison with a PC or console. That means a reliable article cannot promise a particular performance level, universal game compatibility, a specific thermal outcome, or a console replacement based on the available evidence.

Samsung Business Insights’ April 15, 2026 article, “How to use your Galaxy S26 as a PC with Samsung DeX,” says the Galaxy S26 Series has “the most powerful processor yet on a Samsung mobile device” and that it is “specifically designed to support gaming.” This is Samsung’s own marketing language, not an independent benchmark, and it does not establish how a game performs in DeX or show that DeX matches PC or console gaming. The cited passage supplies no numerical gaming benchmark.
The most useful expectation is therefore device- and game-specific: DeX can provide a larger-screen way to use a supported Galaxy game, while the app’s display and controller behavior and the chosen display connection determine whether that setup is practical for you. Test the actual title and connection rather than treating the DeX desktop as a compatibility guarantee.

Why does my game appear in a small window instead of filling the monitor?
