Streamlabs documents Safe Mode as a live-chat safety feature, not as a verified way to start Streamlabs Desktop with plugins or customizations disabled. To troubleshoot the Desktop app, use its Diagnostic Report or a fix matched to the problem. If you mean chat safety, activate Safe Mode from the Streamlabs Dashboard or, with Cloudbot configured, by moderator command.
What Streamlabs Safe Mode does—and what it does not
Streamlabs describes Safe Mode as a feature to help prevent harassment, hateful messages, and chat spam. Its documented controls change live-channel activity: activating it clears recent events and queued follower, host, and raid alerts, and disables follower alerts. With Cloudbot enabled, it can also restrict chat and clear chat history. These actions are not a harmless diagnostic launch for the Desktop app. Streamlabs’ Safe Mode guide documents the feature for Twitch chat and Dashboard use.

The reviewed Streamlabs Desktop troubleshooting material points instead to a Diagnostic Report, Clear Cache and Restart, and symptom-specific fixes. It does not establish a distinct Desktop startup Safe Mode. That does not prove no such control could exist in every version, but do not rely on a Safe Mode startup button or shortcut unless your installed version’s documentation specifically confirms one.

Use Safe Mode for live-chat safety
Activate it from the Streamlabs Dashboard
- Sign in to the Streamlabs Dashboard using your Twitch credentials.
- Open Recent Events.
- Select the shield icon to open Safe Mode.
- Choose the safety actions you want, then select Activate.
To turn Safe Mode off, return to Recent Events and deactivate it. Before activating, account for the cleared recent events and queued alerts; if Cloudbot actions are enabled, chat restrictions and chat-history clearing may also affect the live channel.

Let moderators control it with Cloudbot
- Open the Cloudbot Dashboard and make sure Cloudbot is enabled.
- Go to Commands > Default.
- In the Misc section, enable !safemode and !safemodeoff for moderators.
- A moderator can type !safemode in Twitch chat to activate the feature; use !safemodeoff to turn it off.
Streamlabs says Safe Mode is free and available to everyone. The documented command flow specifically describes Twitch chat, so do not assume the same controls apply to other platforms.
Troubleshoot Streamlabs Desktop without confusing it with chat Safe Mode
Collect a Diagnostic Report
- In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Get Support.
- Select Upload Diagnostic Report.
- Review what the report may contain before uploading. Streamlabs says it may include app settings, scenes and sources, logs, operating-system details, CPU, memory, GPU and driver information, and device details.
- Share the resulting diagnostic code with Streamlabs Support when requesting help.
The report is useful when support needs configuration and system context; it is not itself a repair or reset. See Streamlabs’ Diagnostic Report instructions.

Use Clear Cache and Restart cautiously
Streamlabs places Clear Cache and Restart under Settings > Get Support. Its getting-started documentation describes this as starting from scratch and wiping user data like an initial install. Treat it as a reset, not a routine first step: understand what data may be removed and preserve anything you need before using it. Streamlabs’ Desktop quick-start guide covers the option.

- Check that Microsoft C++ Redistributables are installed.
- Try restarting Streamlabs Desktop as administrator.
- Confirm that the stream key is correct.
- For certain advanced encoder configurations, check which GPU the application is using.
- If you are streaming to Twitch, consider Twitch auto-optimizer where applicable.
These are not universal fixes. Start with the symptom-specific instructions in Streamlabs’ going-live troubleshooting guide; avoid changing encoder or GPU settings unrelated to your configuration.
If Desktop crashes or will not open
Streamlabs’ crash guidance covers enabling additional crash reporting, checking Windows and GPU drivers, reinstalling or running Desktop as administrator, and checking firewall or antivirus access. If those steps do not resolve the crash, submit a support ticket with relevant details or a Diagnostic Report code. Use the official crash troubleshooting guide for the applicable steps. If the app opens inconsistently, capture the error and relevant diagnostic information before attempting a reset.
