The practical workflow is: install RVM with its official installer, install a Ruby version with rvm install, activate it with rvm use, and create a project gemset with rvm gemset create. Ruby compilation can require system packages and therefore sudo access. On a shared VPS, choose single-user, multi-user, or mixed installation deliberately so permissions do not become an operational problem.

What RVM does on a VPS
RVM (Ruby Version Manager) is a command-line tool for installing, managing, and working with multiple Ruby environments, from the interpreter itself through separate sets of gems. That matters on a VPS because one machine commonly hosts more than one application. Older Rails code may require a different Ruby than a newer service, and two applications can require incompatible gem versions even when they use the same interpreter.

Without an environment manager, changing Ruby globally can break an existing deployment. RVM keeps versions selectable from the shell and lets you create a gemset for each project. A gemset is an independent collection of gems associated with a Ruby version, so an application’s dependencies do not have to share one global installation.
RVM is a shell tool rather than a process supervisor, web server, deployment system, or application database. It selects the Ruby and gem collection used by commands in a shell session. Your VPS still needs its normal operating-system updates, service manager, reverse proxy, firewall, backups, and application deployment process.

Plan the installation before changing the server
Choose who needs RVM
- Single-user installation: RVM is placed in one user’s home directory. This is the simplest choice when one administrator or one application account owns the Ruby projects.
- Multi-user installation: RVM is installed system-wide so several users can access it. It requires administrative setup and careful group and permission management.
- Mixed mode: RVM is available system-wide, while each user’s rubies and gemsets remain isolated in that user’s
$HOME. This provides shared access to the tool without putting every project’s gems in one shared directory.
Do not install RVM as root merely because the VPS has a root account. Decide which Unix account will run the application and perform the installation for that account, or intentionally configure the documented multi-user mode.
Confirm the release channel
RVM’s upgrade guidance treats stable as the channel to use instead of chasing a moving “latest” label. The latest tagged RVM release located for this guide is 1.29.12, dated January 2021; its release notes describe it as a small bug-fix release with binary updates. That date is old enough that you should check the current release list before a production install. Use the official project site and the RVM release list on GitHub to verify what is currently available. Do not assume that a changelog entry under “Next” has shipped.

- Log in as the account that will own the Ruby projects.
- Ensure that account can run
sudoif RVM must install compiler or library dependencies while building Ruby. - Have enough disk space for source trees, build artifacts, more than one Ruby, and each application’s gems.
- Record the Ruby versions each application actually supports before installing anything. The version shown in RVM examples,
2.1.1, is an installation example rather than a recommendation for a new production service.
Install RVM on a VPS
Single-user installation
RVM publishes a curl-based installer. The usual stable-channel form is:
curl -sSL https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stableRVM also documents installer options that install Ruby at the same time, as well as options for Rails or selected gems. Because installer flags can change, confirm the current syntax on the official RVM site before copying an installation command into automation.
After the installer finishes, start a new login shell (or reload the shell configuration that the installer added), then verify that the command is available:

rvm --versionIf the shell reports that rvm is not found, the installation may have succeeded but the current shell has not loaded RVM’s initialization script. Log out and back in as the installing user before attempting another installation; running the installer repeatedly can create confusing, mixed configurations.

Installing with a Ruby in one step
The installer supports a stable installation with Ruby. A typical form is:
curl -sSL https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --rubyThis saves a separate rvm install step, but it does not remove the need to verify the resulting Ruby and to select the correct version for each project. If you need a specific interpreter, the more transparent workflow is to install RVM first, inspect available versions, and then install the chosen Ruby explicitly.
Multi-user and mixed installations
For a shared VPS, use the multi-user or mixed mode described by RVM’s installation documentation rather than converting a single-user install after applications are already deployed. System-wide access means administrators must manage which users can invoke RVM and where its files are writable. In mixed mode, the command is shared but each user’s rubies and gemsets stay in that user’s home directory.
After a multi-user setup, test from every account that will deploy or run Ruby code. A successful test for the administrator does not prove that an application account has the required shell initialization, group membership, home-directory permissions, or access to the selected gemset.

Find, install, and verify Ruby versions
List versions that RVM knows about
rvm list knownThis prints the interpreters and variants available to the installed RVM release. Choose a version supported by your application and by its dependencies. Do not select an old version solely because it appears in an example or because it is familiar; an application may need a specific version, but that requirement should come from its code and dependency lockfile.
Install a Ruby interpreter
The basic installation pattern is:
rvm install 2.1.12.1.1 is the version used in RVM’s basic example. In practice, replace it with the version you selected from rvm list known and your application’s compatibility requirements. RVM may download source, compile the interpreter, and install system dependencies. The account running the command therefore needs sudo rights when automatic dependency installation is required.
A dependency failure is not the same as a Ruby failure. Read the first missing package or library in the output, install the operating-system prerequisite with your distribution’s package manager, and rerun the RVM command. If you deliberately cannot grant sudo, RVM can disable automatic dependency installation, but you then become responsible for installing every compiler, header, and library required by the selected Ruby before building it.
Confirm what was installed
rvm listruby --versionwhich ruby
The first command shows RVM-managed rubies; the other two confirm the interpreter currently found by the shell. Run these checks as the same Unix user that will deploy or execute the application. A different account can have a different active Ruby even on the same VPS.

Use a version for the current shell
rvm use 2.1.1ruby --version
rvm use changes the active interpreter for the current shell context. Run the version check immediately after switching, especially in deployment scripts, so a failed or unloaded RVM initialization cannot silently send commands to the system Ruby.

Switching Ruby does not automatically make one application’s gems suitable for another. Ruby versions and gem collections are separate choices; select both before running Bundler, Rails commands, migrations, or application servers.
Use a Ruby together with a gemset
RVM identifies a combined environment as ruby-version@gemset-name. For example:
rvm use 2.1.1@inventoryIf the gemset does not exist, create it first:
rvm gemset create inventory
rvm use 2.1.1@inventoryThe exact Ruby portion must match an interpreter installed on that account. The gemset name is a project label; use a short, stable name that matches the service or repository rather than a temporary ticket number.

Why a separate gemset matters
A gemset is a separate collection of gems for one Ruby environment. If two applications require different releases of the same library, separate gemsets prevent one deployment from overwriting the other’s dependency. This is particularly useful on a VPS hosting multiple Ruby applications under different Unix users or service directories.
Every newly installed Ruby receives the gems listed in RVM’s global gemset file. Treat that global set as a deliberate baseline, not as a place to accumulate application dependencies. Project-specific gems belong in the project’s gemset and should be reproducible from its dependency files.
Repeatable project setup
- List available interpreters with
rvm listand select the version required by the application. - Create a named gemset, for example
rvm gemset create inventory. - Activate the pair with
rvm use 2.1.1@inventory. - Verify both selections with
ruby --versionand the gem environment command supplied by your Ruby tooling. - Install the application’s locked dependencies while that environment is active.
- Run the application’s tests or a health check before changing the service’s process configuration.
The critical operational detail is step three: running a package installation before selecting the project’s gemset can put gems in a different environment and make the deployment appear successful until the service starts.
Keep application accounts separate
For multiple services, prefer a dedicated Unix account per application where practical. Each account then has its own home directory, RVM state, gemsets, and file permissions. A shared account can work, but every deployment must select the right Ruby and gemset explicitly, and one project can more easily affect another through writable files or shell defaults.
Permissions, sudo, and failed builds
When sudo is required
Compiling a Ruby often needs system packages. RVM may invoke sudo to install them, so the user running rvm install needs permission to do so. This is an operating-system permission, not a Ruby permission; giving a user access to a gemset does not grant access to install system libraries.
If policy forbids sudo for the application account, ask an administrator to install the required dependencies first, then disable RVM’s automatic dependency installation as documented by RVM. Keep a written package list with the server configuration so a rebuild does not depend on an undocumented manual step.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes

Remove a Ruby: uninstall versus remove
RVM provides two commands with different cleanup behavior:

Check which projects still depend on a version before deleting it. Removing an interpreter can invalidate a project’s selected environment and any service that starts with that environment.
Upgrade RVM without destabilizing applications
RVM’s upgrade guidance says stable releases are produced roughly every month or two, with minor version increases, and recommends the stable channel rather than a “latest” label. Before upgrading a production VPS:
- Check the current stable release on the official site and the GitHub releases page.
- Record the installed RVM version and the Ruby/gemset pair used by each service.
- Test the upgrade on a staging VPS or a snapshot, especially when the server depends on older Rubies.
- Upgrade RVM using its documented stable-channel procedure.
- Reopen a login shell, verify
rvm --version, and test each application’s selected Ruby and gemset.
The changelog can contain entries under an unreleased “Next” section, including changes such as OpenSSL support or platform-specific features. Treat those entries as planned changes until a tagged release confirms that they shipped.
