Divi AI Agent Rules save instructions you want the Agent to follow across requests, so you do not have to repeat them in every chat. In Divi 5’s Visual Builder, open the Agent’s Rules panel, choose Add New Rule, and fill in its title, instruction, and scope. Use Always Use for guidance that belongs with every request; otherwise, describe the matching task in When To Use.
What a Rule does
A Rule is a saved instruction that guides the Divi AI Agent across conversations when it applies. It can describe a site-wide convention, such as brand voice, or a narrower preference, such as form spacing. Elegant Themes’ Rules guide describes Rules as guidance the Agent can follow without you retyping it for each request.

Rules guide the Agent; they do not enforce design settings like a preset or automatically change existing page elements when you save one. Treat them as instructions for future work, then check the Agent’s result on a small representative task.
How to add a Rule
- Open the Divi 5 Visual Builder. Open a page and launch the Divi AI Agent from the builder interface or its sidebar.
- Open Rules. In the Agent, open the Rules panel and select Add New Rule.
- Enter a Title. Use a short, recognizable name so you can find the Rule later, such as “Brand voice” or “Form spacing.”
- Write the Rule. State the behavior you want in plain, specific language. For writing, name the tone and wording preferences; for design, identify the property or convention.
- Set When To Use. Describe the kind of task for which the instruction is relevant.
- Choose Always Use and save. Turn it on only if the instruction should accompany every AI request. Otherwise, leave it off so the Agent can use the When To Use description to judge whether the Rule applies.
Adding a Rule directly from the Rules list does not ask for confirmation. If you ask the Agent in chat to create one, it asks you to confirm before publishing it, according to the official Rules instructions.
#1 Best Overall
Choose whether a Rule applies everywhere or conditionally
| Setting | How it applies | Best fit | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always Use | The Rule is included with every AI request. | Stable conventions that genuinely apply across site work, such as a brand voice or naming standard. | A narrow instruction can be irrelevant on unrelated tasks. Reserve this setting for guidance that belongs everywhere. |
| Always Use off | The Agent judges whether the request matches the description in When To Use. | Task-specific guidance, such as spacing when building or editing a form. | Vague scope makes it harder to tell when the Rule should apply. Name the relevant task or component clearly. |
For a form-spacing Rule, for example, write a clear instruction and set When To Use to building or editing a form. The official help article gives “24px gaps between form fields and 40px above the submit button” as an example. Those measurements are illustrative, not a universal design recommendation; use your own site’s design system.
Write focused instructions and attach context
Start with one instruction you regularly find yourself repeating. Keep separate topics in separate Rules so each is easy to find and update. A voice Rule might specify a friendly, plain-language tone, avoiding jargon, and direct calls to action. A mobile-spacing Rule should describe the intended mobile styling and be scoped to relevant work rather than applied indiscriminately.
Rank #2
The Rule editor can attach context, such as a preset, Global Variable, or another site element. Use the context picker to identify the actual reference instead of relying on a vague phrase such as “the blue we usually use.” For a typography instruction, you might point to an existing heading and say what should match while preserving the copy and semantic heading level. That is a drafting example, not a guarantee that the Agent will interpret every reference perfectly.
Review and maintain saved Rules
After saving a Rule, try a small task that should match it. Compare the output with the instruction and tighten any wording that allowed an unintended interpretation. Keep Rules narrow enough that you can tell whether they helped.
Rank #3
In the Rules list, hover over a custom Rule to edit, duplicate, or delete it. Nesting also lets multiple Rules reuse a shared instruction, which can make common guidance easier to maintain. If you ask the Agent in chat to update or delete a Rule, it asks for confirmation. These controls and behaviors are described in the Rules guide.
Rule or Command: which should you use?
| Feature | Purpose | How it is used | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rule | Guides how the Agent approaches work when the instruction applies. | Saved guidance is included automatically when Always Use is on, or considered against When To Use when it is off. | Use a consistent brand voice or form-spacing convention. |
| Command | Stores a reusable prompt for a job you choose to run. | Select it from the Commands panel or invoke it by typing / in chat. |
Run a recurring audit or cleanup request. |
Elegant Themes sums up the distinction in its Rules documentation: “A rule is how you want work done; a command is a job you want done.” See the separate Commands guide for details on saved prompts.

Access and billing context
The Divi AI Agent is part of the Divi 5 Visual Builder, and Elegant Themes’ overview says an active Divi AI subscription is required. Its first-use walkthrough says Agent usage is billed through an AI Wallet balance funded monthly by the subscription. The exact price or billing amount is not stated here; check current subscription and wallet terms with Elegant Themes.
