To use Remote Desktop from outside a home or work network, first connect the client device to a VPN that can reach the network where the Windows PC is located. Then use Remote Desktop Connection or Windows App to connect to that PC by its name or IP address. The destination must support incoming Remote Desktop, be switched on, and permit your account.
Before you connect: make sure the PC can accept Remote Desktop
Check the Windows edition
The PC you want to control—the host—must run an edition that supports incoming Remote Desktop connections. Microsoft lists Windows Professional, Enterprise, and Education, plus Windows Server editions, as eligible hosts. Windows Home can run a Remote Desktop client but cannot host an incoming connection. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop setup guidance.

Enable access and authorize the account
- On the host PC, open Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Turn on Enable Remote Desktop and confirm the prompt.
- Make sure the account you will use is permitted to connect. If it is not already allowed, add it in the Remote Desktop user settings.
- Keep Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled where supported, use a strong, unique password for each account that can connect, and confirm the host firewall allows Remote Desktop.
The host must remain powered on, connected to its network, and reachable while you are away. Microsoft recommends enabling Remote Desktop only on trusted networks.
Connect to the VPN that reaches the PC’s network
Use the VPN intended to provide access to the network containing the host PC. A general-purpose privacy VPN or any VPN that happens to be active does not necessarily provide that route. Your company administrator or the person who configured your home network can tell you which client or profile to use, how to sign in, and whether the target PC should be reachable by name or IP address.

Connect the VPN before starting Remote Desktop. Microsoft explains that, with the appropriate VPN connection, the Remote Desktop client acts as though it is part of the same network and can access the PC. If needed, check that the VPN works by opening an internal-only site or reaching another permitted resource. Microsoft’s guide to accessing a PC from outside its network describes this approach.
Start the Remote Desktop session
- On the device you are using remotely, connect to the correct VPN and wait for it to report that it is connected.
- Open Remote Desktop Connection or Windows App.
- Enter the host PC’s computer name or IP address, then select Connect.
- When prompted, sign in with an account authorized on the host.
If the computer name does not work over the VPN, ask the network administrator or home-network owner for a hostname or IP address reachable through that VPN. A name that works on the local network may not resolve from the remote client.

VPN or RD Gateway: which access method applies?
| Access method | Who provides it | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| VPN | Your home network or organization | A VPN connection that routes the client to the host’s network, plus an eligible, configured PC and an authorized account. |
| RD Gateway | Your organization | The organization’s Gateway name or configuration, a certificate trusted by the client, and the authentication and access permissions set by administrators. |
An organization may use Remote Desktop Gateway instead of asking employees to start a VPN. Microsoft describes RD Gateway as a way to reach internal resources over the internet without a VPN: it uses an encrypted SSL tunnel, authenticates the user, and forwards traffic only to authorized resources. Administrators control access with policies such as RD Connection Authorization Policies and RD Resource Authorization Policies. If your organization uses this setup, request its Gateway details or feed; deployment and policy configuration are administrator tasks. See Microsoft’s RD Gateway planning guidance.

Troubleshoot a Remote Desktop connection over VPN
The VPN will not connect or internal resources are unavailable
- Confirm you are using the VPN profile intended for the target network and that you can authenticate successfully.
- Try an internal-only web page or another resource you are authorized to access. If that also fails, resolve VPN access with the VPN administrator before troubleshooting Remote Desktop.
- Check with the administrator that the VPN grants access to the host’s network; a connected status alone does not prove that the needed route is available.

The VPN works, but the PC cannot be reached
- Verify that the host is powered on, connected to the network, and has Remote Desktop enabled.
- Confirm the account is allowed to connect and that the host firewall permits Remote Desktop.
- Try the host’s reachable IP address if its name fails to resolve, or ask the administrator for the correct hostname or address.
- Check that the VPN allows traffic to the host, not just to other internal resources.
The PC responds, but sign-in fails
Check that you are entering the current credentials for an account authorized on the host. If necessary, have an administrator confirm the account is in the Remote Desktop Users group or an administrator group, as appropriate.

When VPN access is available, do not casually forward the Remote Desktop port from the router to the PC. Microsoft warns that port forwarding opens the PC to the internet and recommends VPN access instead. If an administrator determines that port forwarding is unavoidable, Microsoft’s guide discusses restricting connections by source IP; that measure does not eliminate the security risks. Keep NLA enabled where possible and limit access to accounts that need it.
Windows Server RRAS VPN note
This is a narrow server-administration point, not a rule for every VPN product: Microsoft does not recommend PPTP or L2TP for Windows Server Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) because of their lack of security features. For new RRAS setups beginning with Windows Server 2025, PPTP and L2TP are not accepted by default; SSTP and IKEv2 remain accepted without change. Consult Microsoft’s RRAS VPN protocol documentation before changing a managed server configuration.
