Windows Home can connect to another PC, but it cannot host incoming Microsoft Remote Desktop connections. Keep the host awake and online, and use an account authorized to sign in.
Choose the right remote-access method
“Remote Desktop over the internet” can mean different setups. Choose based on who manages the computer and how it is allowed to be reached:

| Method | What it is for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Remote Desktop through a VPN | Connecting to a personally managed or work Windows host from outside its local network | The host must support incoming Remote Desktop connections. Connect to the VPN first, then use a Remote Desktop client. For a work PC, ask the administrator which VPN and route are approved. Microsoft describes VPN and port forwarding as options for external access. |
| Windows Remote Desktop with router port forwarding | Routing an incoming connection from a router’s public side to a Windows PC inside the network | This requires router configuration and exposes a route to the host. Microsoft identifies 3389 as the default Remote Desktop port; a different port alone is not a substitute for access controls. Use this only with a security-conscious configuration. Microsoft’s outside-access guidance explains the route. |
| Chrome Remote Desktop | Accessing or sharing a computer with Google’s separate remote-access service | It is not the Windows Remote Desktop host. Google says an internet connection is required on both ends. Work and school networks may restrict it. Google’s setup guide covers its setup. |
| Organization-hosted Remote Desktop web access | Connecting to a work deployment that an administrator has configured | The organization supplies the URL and credentials. The web client is for supported desktop operating systems and does not support mobile devices. It is not interchangeable with setting up a personal Windows PC. Microsoft’s web-client documentation describes this deployment. |
Check whether the Windows PC can host connections
The PC you want to control is the host; the device you connect from is the client. Microsoft lists Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, and Windows Server editions as able to host incoming connections. Windows Home can be used as a client, but cannot host incoming Microsoft Remote Desktop connections. Check the edition on the host before changing settings. Microsoft’s host-access guidance and its Remote Desktop setup guide explain eligibility.
Set up a Windows PC for Remote Desktop
- Confirm the host edition. On the computer you want to control, check Windows Settings > System > About. If it is Windows Home, use a different supported host or an alternative remote-access method; enabling the built-in host setting is not available on Home.
- Enable Remote Desktop and note the PC name. Open Settings > System > Remote Desktop, switch Remote Desktop on, and note the PC name shown there for the client. Administrators have access by default; add only intended users through the available user-access controls. Microsoft’s setup guide gives the current Windows path.
- Use a strong account password. The account must be authorized to connect. Give remote-enabled accounts strong, unique passwords, and avoid granting access to people who do not need it.
- Keep the host reachable. Leave the PC powered on, connected to its network, and awake. Review its sleep settings: a sleeping or hibernating host will not accept the connection. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance covers host availability checks.
- Arrange a route from outside the local network. Connect through the VPN provided by your organization or configure a supported route such as router port forwarding. Router menus vary by model, so use the router’s documentation for its exact settings. For a managed work computer, do not change network access without the administrator’s approval.
- Connect from the client. Open an appropriate Remote Desktop client, add the host’s PC name or address, select it, and sign in with an authorized account. Microsoft documents client options for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android through Windows App or other applicable clients. See Microsoft’s platform instructions.
Using Chrome Remote Desktop instead
Chrome Remote Desktop is a separate option, not a way to turn Windows Home into a Microsoft Remote Desktop host. Google’s help page says an internet connection is required to share or access a computer. Follow Google’s setup instructions on the computers involved.

Do not change a work or school network’s rules yourself; an administrator may control which connections are possible. Google’s network troubleshooting guidance has the details.

- The host is unavailable: Confirm it is powered on, awake, connected to the network, and configured to accept remote connections.
- The host edition cannot accept connections: Verify it is Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, or a supported Windows Server edition. Windows Home cannot host incoming Microsoft Remote Desktop connections.
- The PC name does not resolve: Check the spelling and try the host’s IP address if the name fails. An address that works on the local network may not be reachable from outside it without the correct VPN or routed access.
- The network path is blocked: Check whether you are connected to the required VPN, whether the router route is configured correctly, and whether a firewall or organization gateway blocks the connection. Microsoft identifies 3389 as the default RDP port; Google Remote Desktop has separate network requirements.
- Sign-in is rejected: Confirm that the account is in the Remote Desktop Users group or another authorized group, and that the credentials are correct.
- The PC is managed by an organization: Ask the administrator whether VPN, Gateway, Web Access, or another approved route is required. Organization policies can block outside connections.
Microsoft’s Remote Desktop troubleshooting FAQ covers these checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProtect the PC you expose to remote access
Microsoft warns that enabling Remote Desktop opens a port on the PC. Its guidance is to enable it only on trusted networks, avoid using it on devices that require strict access controls, and protect remote-enabled accounts with strong, unique passwords. Read Microsoft’s security guidance. Port forwarding creates a route from the internet to a device on your network; the feature itself does not make that device safe to expose. For a work computer, the organization’s administrator should choose the access method and controls.
