To take a screenshot with Puppeteer through MCP, connect an MCP client to a browser-control server, create or select a browser context, navigate to the page, wait for the state you need, and invoke that server’s screenshot action. The exact tool name and payload depend on the server: a community Puppeteer MCP reference uses execute-browser-action, while the configuration and screenshot examples below distinguish that interface from the official Playwright MCP implementation.
What Puppeteer, MCP, and a screenshot each do
Puppeteer is the browser-automation layer. Chrome for Developers describes it as a JavaScript library that automates Chrome and Firefox through the Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi. Its documented uses include screenshots, PDFs, navigation, UI testing, and performance analysis. See Chrome for Developers’ Puppeteer documentation.
MCP is the tool boundary between an AI client and a server that can control a browser. The client asks the server to perform actions; the server implementation manages browser sessions and contexts, exposes available tools, and determines which arguments those tools accept. A screenshot is the visual artifact returned or saved by that action—it is not the same thing as the browser’s accessibility snapshot.
- Browser automation: navigation, clicks, typing, waiting, and page evaluation.
- MCP server: tools and context/session handling exposed to the AI client.
- Screenshot: a raster image of the current viewport, an element, or a full page, depending on the supported options.
Do not assume that every server branded as a Puppeteer MCP server has the same tools, setup flags, or screenshot arguments. Use the server’s own reference for its interface.

Connect an MCP client to a browser server
There is no universal Puppeteer MCP installation command in the available documentation. As a current, official configuration example, Playwright MCP documents this server entry:
{
"mcpServers": {
"playwright": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
The Playwright MCP setup page lists Node.js 20 or newer as a prerequisite. This is a Playwright MCP example, not evidence that a Puppeteer-specific server uses the same package or command. Follow the setup instructions for the Puppeteer MCP server you intend to use, then restart or refresh the MCP client as that client requires and confirm that the server’s browser tools appear.
For an official Playwright MCP setup and its current requirements, see Playwright MCP documentation. For a Puppeteer-oriented community reference, the documented workflow uses create-browser-context and execute-browser-action; check that reference for its exact installation and tool schema before copying a call.
Take a screenshot through a Puppeteer MCP server
The workflow is: establish a context, set reproducible browser conditions, navigate, wait for the page state that matters, and capture. The following example represents the community Puppeteer MCP reference’s action shape; it is a tool payload, not a standalone Puppeteer JavaScript program.

1. Create or select a browser context
Use the server’s create-browser-context tool when available, then retain the returned context identifier for subsequent calls. A fresh context helps isolate cookies and page state between runs. Set a viewport explicitly if the server exposes width and height. Locale, timezone, and user agent can also affect rendered content, so fix those values when the server supports them and they matter to your test.
2. Navigate and wait for readiness
Use the server’s navigation action to open the target URL. Then wait for the condition relevant to the page rather than assuming navigation alone means the page is ready. Depending on what the server exposes, useful conditions include network idle, a selector appearing, an application-ready signal, or a short fixed delay when no better signal exists.
This matters on single-page applications and pages that load fonts, images, or below-the-fold content asynchronously. A screenshot taken too early can be blank or incomplete even if the browser successfully navigated.
3. Invoke the screenshot action

"arguments": {
"contextId": "context-123",
"action": "screenshot",
"params": {
"fullPage": true,
"path": "baseline.png"
}
}
}
The context ID above is illustrative: use the ID returned by your server. The path indicates a file destination in this reference’s example; other servers may return image data, use different file handling, or expose another tool entirely. The same reference models browser actions such as navigate, click, type, evaluate, wait, and screenshot through execute-browser-action.
Choose viewport, element, or full-page capture
Screenshot scope changes what the image represents. Choose it deliberately so a later reviewer knows whether a crop is missing content or whether the browser captured only the visible area.
| Capture scope | How to request it | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Current viewport | Omit an element target and leave full-page capture off. | Checking what a user sees at a particular scroll position and viewport size. |
| Selected element | Provide the supported element target or selector; keep full-page capture off. | Inspecting a form, card, dialog, or other component without unrelated page content. |
| Full scrollable page | Set fullPage: true where supported. |
Reviewing a long page from top to bottom or saving a visual baseline. |
The documented screenshot interface does not combine a full-page capture with an element target. Choose one scope per capture. In the community Puppeteer reference, the example uses fullPage and path; other interfaces may express the target differently.
Formats, scale, and dimensions
Documented screenshot outputs include PNG, JPEG, and WebP. PNG is commonly useful when you want to preserve crisp UI edges; JPEG is a lossy format; WebP is another supported image format. The available MCP screenshot controls depend on the implementation, so confirm the server’s accepted format names rather than assuming every server supports all three.

In the documented Playwright-style screenshot interface, scale: "css" is the default sizing mode. It produces an image sized according to CSS pixels. scale: "device" uses device scale and can produce a higher-resolution capture. Higher resolution can help when small text or fine details are difficult to inspect, but it also changes image dimensions and can make files larger.
A representative Playwright-style call is:
{
"target": "e12",
"type": "png",
"filename": "login-form.png",
"fullPage": false,
"scale": "css"
}
Here, target selects an element, while omitting it requests the viewport. Set fullPage: true for the complete scrollable page, but do not combine that option with an element target in this documented interface. Use scale: "device" when a higher-resolution image is needed. These are Playwright-style controls, not a promise that a Puppeteer MCP server accepts the same payload.
Use accessibility snapshots and screenshots together
A screenshot is best for visual verification: layout, spacing, colors, canvas or chart rendering, and bugs that are visible but not apparent from page structure. An accessibility snapshot is better for reading the page’s structure and finding stable references to controls for interaction.
Playwright MCP’s screenshot guidance puts the distinction plainly: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” A practical sequence is to inspect the accessibility snapshot, use its references to interact with a control, and then capture a screenshot to verify the resulting visual state. Avoid making image coordinates your default way to click when stable accessibility references are available.

Build repeatable visual-regression comparisons
A screenshot comparison is meaningful only if the baseline and current capture represent equivalent conditions. The Puppeteer MCP reference describes a workflow that saves a full-page baseline and sends baseline and current images to a comparison endpoint with a threshold. The threshold’s meaning and behavior are implementation-specific; use the comparison tool’s own documentation rather than treating a particular value as universal.
For useful diffs, record or control the conditions that can change rendering:
- Browser version and screenshot implementation.
- Viewport dimensions and device scale.
- Locale, timezone, and user-agent settings when relevant.
- Application data and account state; freeze changing data or time where possible.
- Fonts and asset readiness before capture.
- Animations and other transient visual states.
Use a clean context for each run when isolation is important, and wait for the same readiness condition each time. A diff threshold can suppress minor rendering variation, but it cannot make captures reproducible when the page state or browser conditions keep changing.
Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blank or partial image | The application was not ready, or lazy-loaded assets had not appeared. | Wait for an application-ready signal or relevant selector; scroll or otherwise trigger lazy content if the server supports it, then capture. |
| Unexpected image dimensions | The context viewport was not set, or a viewport capture was mistaken for a full-page capture. | Set viewport width and height explicitly and choose the intended capture scope. |
| Element target fails | An accessibility reference may be stale after navigation, or the server expects another target format. | Refresh the accessibility snapshot or use the selector form documented by that server. |
| Text is hard to read | The capture scale or viewport is too small, or fonts have not finished loading. | Use device scale or a larger viewport and wait for the page’s fonts to load. |
| Visual diffs are flaky | Data, time, animation, browser, viewport, or page state differs between runs. | Use a clean context, control the viewport and browser version, freeze changing state where possible, and avoid capturing during animation. |
| Tool reports an unknown action or argument | The payload belongs to a different MCP implementation. | Inspect the connected server’s own tool list and schema; do not assume a Playwright-style call works on a Puppeteer server. |
| Unexpected code execution or access risk | A server may expose arbitrary code execution or broad browser access. | Enable those capabilities only for trusted MCP clients and URLs. Playwright’s official documentation warns that its unsafe code runner is RCE-equivalent. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot artifact rather than an MCP-controlled browser session, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the following cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of the page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. Python and Node.js examples are also available:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month—no card required.
