On an HP ENVY running Windows, press the key marked Prt Sc, Prt Scr, or Print Screen to copy an image of the screen to the clipboard. If that key is a secondary function, hold Fn as you press it. To save a PNG automatically, press Windows + Print Screen; HP places the file in PicturesScreenshots. To capture only the current window, press Shift + Print Screen.
Choose the result you need
The correct shortcut depends on whether you want a temporary image for pasting, a file saved on the laptop, or only the window you are using.

HP’s guidance applies broadly to Windows laptops. ENVY generations use different keyboard layouts, so the key position and whether Fn is required depend on your individual model.
Find Print Screen on your HP ENVY keyboard
Look for the label, not a fixed key position
Scan the top and right side of the keyboard for Prt Sc, Prt Scr, or Print Screen. On a compact ENVY keyboard, the command may share a key with another symbol. The secondary symbol can be printed in a different color or at the edge of the key.

Check whether Fn is needed
HP laptop keys can have extra function symbols. If pressing Print Screen by itself produces no screenshot, hold Fn and press the key marked Print Screen. Do not assume every ENVY requires Fn: the behavior varies by keyboard.
Copy the whole screen to the clipboard
- Display the screen you want to capture.
- Press Print Screen. If the key is secondary, press Fn + Print Screen.
- Open an application that accepts images, such as an image editor, document editor, email composer, or chat box.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the clipboard image.
- Use that application’s save or export command if you need a permanent file. The Print Screen shortcut itself copies the image; it does not name or organize a file.
The clipboard holds the copied image only until another operation replaces it. If you need to keep the capture, paste it into an application and save it before copying something else.
Capture only the current window
- Click the window you want so it is the active window.
- Press Shift + Print Screen. If your ENVY treats Print Screen as a secondary function, try Shift + Fn + Print Screen.
- Paste the result with Ctrl + V into an application that accepts images.
HP documents Shift + Print Screen as copying the current window rather than the entire desktop. This is useful when you do not want other open windows or the taskbar in the image.

Save a screenshot directly as a PNG
- Arrange the desktop exactly as you want it captured.
- Press Windows + Print Screen. If the key is secondary on your keyboard, use Windows + Fn + Print Screen.
- Open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open the newest PNG or copy it to another folder, attach it to a message, or rename it.
HP identifies the destination as the Screenshots folder in the Pictures library. If OneDrive or another backup service redirects your Pictures folder, use File Explorer’s Pictures location rather than assuming it is stored only on the local drive.

Nothing happens after pressing the key
- Try Fn + Print Screen. The key may be assigned to another function unless Fn is held.
- Confirm that you are pressing the key whose legend includes Prt Sc, Prt Scr, or Print Screen; the location differs between ENVY models.
- After pressing the shortcut, paste with Ctrl + V. A clipboard capture does not necessarily open a visible window or notification.
- If you are using the direct-save shortcut, check Pictures > Screenshots instead of waiting for a dialog.
The shortcut performs a different action
A shared key can have more than one symbol. Read the printed legends and repeat the shortcut with Fn. The exact Fn behavior is model-dependent, so an ENVY manual or the labels on your own keyboard are more reliable than a generic key-position diagram.
The pasted image is not the screen you expected
- Use Print Screen for the whole screen and Shift + Print Screen for the active window.
- Click the intended window immediately before using the active-window shortcut.
- Check whether an external display, a maximized window, or a second desktop is part of what you are viewing; the visible result depends on the screen state at capture time.
You cannot find the saved PNG
Use File Explorer and select Pictures, then open Screenshots. Search for recent PNG files if your Pictures library is redirected. The direct-save shortcut creates a file; the clipboard shortcuts require you to paste and save manually.

You copied something else before pasting
Copying text or another image replaces the clipboard contents. Repeat the screenshot shortcut, paste it immediately, and save the pasted image if you need it later.

Preserve and share the capture safely
Review the image before sharing it. A full-screen capture can include private messages, account names, notification previews, browser tabs, or identifying information. Crop or redact sensitive areas in an image editor before sending the file. Give saved files descriptive names when you are collecting several captures, and keep the original PNG if you may need the best available detail later.

If the screenshot is going into a document, paste it first and resize it there. If it is being uploaded, check the destination’s file-type and size limits; the Windows shortcut saves PNG, while an application may offer JPEG or another export format.

When a keyboard shortcut is not the right tool
Print Screen captures what is rendered on your laptop at that moment. It is not designed for scheduled website captures, repeatable URL batches, PDF generation, or removing website overlays before capture. For those developer workflows, an API can be more consistent than operating a browser manually.
