To capture one window in Windows 11, press Windows + Shift + S, choose Window, and click the window you want. For the fastest capture of a window that is already selected, press Alt + Print Screen, then paste with Ctrl + V into Paint, Word, email, or another app.
Two reliable ways to capture one Windows 11 window
Windows 11 includes two built-in shortcuts for single-window screenshots. Use Snipping Tool when you want to choose a visible window and edit the result. Use Alt + Print Screen when the correct window is already active and you want a quick copy.
| Method | How you select the window | Where the result goes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool Window mode | Choose a window from the capture overlay | Clipboard and Snipping Tool editor; Windows may also save it in Pictures > Screenshots | You need explicit selection, annotation, cropping, saving or sharing |
| Alt + Print Screen | The currently active window | Clipboard | The desired window is already focused and you need a fast copy |
Method 1: Use Snipping Tool’s Window mode
This is the most flexible built-in method because you select the target window after opening the capture toolbar.
- Make the target visible. Restore it if minimized and arrange it so the window you want can be selected.
- Open the capture toolbar. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose Window. In the Snipping Tool overlay, select the Window capture mode rather than rectangular, freeform or full-screen capture.
- Select the window. Click the application window you want to capture. Windows captures that window immediately.
- Open the result. Use the notification or Snipping Tool editor that appears after capture.
- Edit or distribute it. In Snipping Tool, you can annotate, crop, copy, save or share the image.
The capture is copied to the clipboard so you can paste it immediately. Windows 11’s current Snipping Tool behavior also automatically saves a captured snip to the Screenshots folder, while the editor’s Save as control lets you choose another filename or location.

When Window mode is the better choice
- You have several applications open and do not want to risk capturing the wrong active window.
- You need to mark up, crop or share the image before saving it.
- You want the window capture workflow without relying on a physical Print Screen key.
Method 2: Capture the active window with Alt + Print Screen
Alt + Print Screen captures only the window you are currently working in. It does not save a file by itself; the image is placed on the clipboard.
- Activate the target window. Click its title bar or any usable area inside it. Only one window can be active at a time.
- Capture it. Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Paste the image. Open Paint, Word, an email message or another application and press Ctrl + V.
- Save from the destination app. Use that program’s save or export command to select a file name, format and folder.
This method is usually the quickest route when the correct window already has focus. It also gives you control over the final save location because the destination application handles the pasted image.
How to confirm the correct window is active
- Click inside the window immediately before pressing the shortcut.
- Check that its title bar and controls appear active compared with other open windows.
- If another app receives the paste, return to the target window and repeat the two-key capture before opening the destination.
Where Windows 11 saves a window screenshot
The two shortcuts have different default workflows:

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Snipping Tool Window mode: the result is copied to the clipboard and opened through the Snipping Tool workflow. Windows 11 may also automatically save the capture in Pictures > Screenshots. Use Save as in the editor when you need a known folder or filename.
- Alt + Print Screen: the image remains on the clipboard until you paste it. It is not a standalone file until the destination app saves it.
If you cannot find a Snipping Tool image, open File Explorer and check Pictures > Screenshots, then use the editor’s save command to create a second copy in a location you can identify.

Which shortcut should you choose?
Choose Snipping Tool Window mode when
- You need to pick a specific window from several visible windows.
- You want built-in annotation, cropping, saving or sharing.
- You are unsure which window is active.
- Your keyboard has no convenient Print Screen key.
Choose Alt + Print Screen when
- The target window is already active.
- You want the fewest steps possible.
- You plan to paste directly into another application and edit there.
What to do if your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Use Windows + Shift + S and choose Window; this avoids the Print Screen key completely. On some hardware, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as the alternative when there is no dedicated PrtScn button. Keyboard layouts differ, so the printed legends and function-layer behavior on your laptop may not match a desktop keyboard.
If you frequently need the older shortcut, a USB keyboard with Print Screen key can provide a dedicated button, but additional hardware is not required for either built-in Windows 11 method.

Troubleshooting single-window captures
The whole desktop was captured
You probably selected full-screen mode in the Snipping Tool overlay or used a different screenshot shortcut. Repeat Windows + Shift + S, select Window, and click the application window itself.
The wrong window was captured
In Window mode, click the correct window after the overlay appears. With Alt + Print Screen, activate the target first; the shortcut always follows the currently active window.

That shortcut copies the image but does not open an editor or save a file. Open Paint, Word, email or another destination and press Ctrl + V. If the paste is still empty, repeat the capture while the target window is active.

The Snipping Tool notification disappeared
Open Snipping Tool from Windows search and check the available capture workflow, or use the clipboard paste immediately after pressing the shortcut. The Windows + Shift + S method still places the capture on the clipboard even when you miss the notification.
The screenshot is not in the folder you expected
Check Pictures > Screenshots for automatically saved Snipping Tool captures. If it is not there, open the Snipping Tool editor and choose Save as. Alt + Print Screen requires you to paste and save from another application.
Your laptop does not respond to Print Screen
Use Snipping Tool Window mode instead. If the device has a function layer, try the documented Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar combination. The exact behavior depends on the keyboard hardware and layout.

Quality and workflow tips
- Resize the target window before capture so important controls are visible.
- Close unrelated windows if you are selecting from the Snipping Tool overlay.
- For documentation, use Snipping Tool annotations before saving so arrows and highlights remain with the image.
- For a quick message, use Alt + Print Screen followed immediately by Ctrl + V in the message editor.
- Save a named copy when the screenshot is evidence you may need later; clipboard contents can be replaced by the next copy operation.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is a screenshot of a web page rather than a local Windows desktop window, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It is not a replacement for capturing a native Windows application, but it removes the need to launch a browser and automate its UI.
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
It also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, ad and tracker blocking, custom headers and cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. A basic cURL request is:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card required. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
The Bottom Line
For a Windows 11 desktop window, use Windows + Shift + S → Window when you want selection and editing, or Alt + Print Screen when the window is already active and you want a clipboard copy.
