Playwright saves a reference screenshot on the first run and checks future captures against it. Review every difference before updating the baseline: a diff is a signal to investigate, not proof of a bug.
Set up a visual screenshot assertion
Screenshot assertions are part of the Playwright Test runner. In a Playwright Test test, navigate to the application state you want to check, then assert on the page or the element that matters:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
test('navigation component visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page.locator('nav')).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace the example address and selector with the application and UI under test. Use a page assertion when the overall page appearance is important; use a locator assertion when the test concerns a particular component. The assertion captures a screenshot and compares it with the expected image associated with the test.
Create and review reference screenshots
- Run the test without an existing baseline. Playwright captures the page and stores the initial image as the expected screenshot in the test’s snapshot directory.
- Commit the snapshot directory. Keep reference images in version control so the team can review visual changes alongside code and test changes.
- Run the test again after changes. Playwright compares the new capture with the stored reference. On a mismatch, inspect the failure output, including the actual and diff images, to determine what changed.
- Update only intentional changes. After confirming that the new appearance is expected, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Review the resulting image changes before committing the updated baselines.
The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparing them. Animations are disabled by default for screenshot assertions, which reduces timing-related variation, but does not make every page element deterministic.

Make visual comparisons more dependable
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Playwright warns that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where practical. If a test moves between developer machines and CI, differences in rendering environments can create image diffs even when the application code has not introduced a visual regression. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.
Control dynamic content
Dates, rotating content, live counters, and other changing regions can make screenshots unstable. The visual comparisons guide documents stylePath, which applies a stylesheet during capture; use it to hide or adjust known volatile elements when those elements are outside the test’s purpose. Prefer controlling application state where possible, so the screenshot still checks the UI that matters.

Choose a deliberate comparison tolerance
Playwright documents maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio for bounding pixel differences. These settings can absorb small, acceptable variation, but overly permissive limits may hide meaningful changes. There is no universal ideal threshold in the documentation; calibrate limits against the UI and the rendering environment you test.

Choose the right kind of snapshot
- Rendered appearance: Use
toHaveScreenshot()to compare a page or locator screenshot visually. - Other snapshot data:
toMatchSnapshot()can compare strings, buffers, and other supported snapshot data. The API directs users totoHaveScreenshot()when the intended comparison is a screenshot. - Accessibility structure: An ARIA snapshot describes the accessibility tree, not rendered pixels. It can complement a visual test, but it detects a different class of changes.
Troubleshoot unexpected diffs
- The test fails on a machine or CI job but not elsewhere: Check whether the operating system, browser version, headless mode, settings, or other capture conditions differ. Run baseline creation and comparison in a consistent environment.
- The diff changes between runs: Look for time-dependent or otherwise dynamic content. Stabilize the application state or use
stylePathto filter regions that are intentionally outside the visual check. - A large area differs after a small code change: Inspect the actual and diff images to identify the changed region and confirm the page reached the intended state before the assertion.
- An intentional design change still fails: Once reviewed and accepted, update the reference with
npx playwright test --update-snapshots, then review and commit the changed snapshots. - A test passes despite a visible difference: Revisit any configured pixel limits or ratio. Reduce tolerance if it is allowing changes that matter to the interface.
