Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion to create and compare visual baselines, then set snapshotPathTemplate so each package, test, and relevant project writes to a predictable, non-colliding location. Commit the baselines with the tests and review image diffs whenever they change.
How Playwright screenshot snapshots work
Playwright Test compares a screenshot from the current run with a reference image stored on disk. For example:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png');
});
When the reference does not exist, Playwright creates it; later runs compare the rendered image with that baseline. You can assert against a locator instead of the whole page when the component or region is the intended visual contract. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Choose a snapshot layout that fits the monorepo
There is no one layout that suits every monorepo. Keep enough path context to distinguish package tests and, when appropriate, separate projects that render intentionally different results.

One shared baseline tree
A single Playwright configuration can keep generated snapshots together for review. Preserve the test file path in the template so tests with the same name in different packages do not overwrite each other.
Separate baselines by project
Playwright projects group tests with different configurations, such as browsers, devices, or environments. If those configurations are expected to produce different images, include {projectName} in the path. If they should render equivalently, avoid duplicating baselines without a reason. Project names are sanitized for filesystem use.

Package-local ownership
If packages own separate test directories or configuration files, retain that package boundary in the path or configuration arrangement. Test paths are interpreted in relation to the configured test directory, while relative template paths resolve from the configuration directory. Check the paths produced in your repository before adopting a shared convention.

snapshotPathTemplate controls generated snapshot placement. The following example places snapshots beneath the test directory, keeps project-specific baselines separate when a project name exists, and includes test-file and snapshot-argument context:

import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
snapshotPathTemplate:
'{testDir}/__screenshots__{/projectName}/{testFilePath}/{arg}{ext}',
});
The optional slash syntax {/projectName} emits the slash and project name only when that token has a value. This avoids an empty path segment for an unnamed project. Relative paths in the template are resolved from the configuration directory. The documented tokens include:
{testDir}: configured test directory.{testFileDir},{testFilePath},{testFileName}: directory or file context for the test.{testName}: test name.{arg},{ext}: snapshot argument and file extension.{platform}: platform context.{projectName}: configured project name.{snapshotDir}: snapshot directory.
Use tokens that make the path unique for the dimensions that really differ. A shared root with only a short test name can collide; adding a project token indiscriminately can create redundant copies. Confirm actual generated paths with your test layout and configuration.

Create, review, and update baselines
- Write a page or locator assertion with
toHaveScreenshot()and a meaningful filename. - Run the relevant test so Playwright creates any missing reference image.
- Inspect the new image and commit the baseline directory with the corresponding tests. Playwright recommends checking snapshot files into version control and reviewing them.
- For an intentional UI change, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots. - Inspect the changed reference images and diffs before committing. Updating snapshots changes the expected result; it does not establish that the UI change was intended or correct.
Keep visual comparisons reliable
Rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep the comparison environment stable and, where practical, generate baselines in the same environment used by CI. Playwright waits for consecutive screenshots to match when creating a reference, but that does not eliminate differences caused by the execution environment.

When a hosted visual-testing service may fit
Native Playwright snapshots keep reference files in the repository and are reviewed through the normal code-review process. Hosted services are optional alternatives for teams that want cloud-based review or a managed visual-testing workflow. Chromatic documents a Playwright integration that extends Playwright’s test and expect utilities and captures page archives; check its setup page for supported Playwright versions. Percy documents a Playwright client for capturing and uploading snapshots for review. Evaluate any service against your baseline storage, CI integration, review process, and access-control requirements; vendor documentation describes capabilities, not independent performance superiority.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need rendered website screenshots rather than repository-based Playwright assertions, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot steps can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
