You can use an eligible Pixel with Android Auto for supported car-display functions such as navigation, calls, messages and media, but treat the contextual suggestions as phone features—not as Android Auto controls. Set up both features and Android Auto while parked, and do not interact with phone suggestions while driving.
What Magic Cue and Proactive Assistance do
Magic Cue can surface relevant information or actions while you chat, call or search on a supported Pixel. Google’s examples include finding a flight time in a text conversation, bringing up an order number during a call about a return, opening a mentioned place in Maps, saving a membership ID to Wallet, sharing a relevant photo in Messages, or opening Calendar when someone asks about your availability. Suggestions depend on context and are not guaranteed to appear every time. Google’s examples of Magic Cue

Proactive Assistance uses Gemini to offer personalized, timely suggestions based on permitted sources such as screen content, notifications, location and connected apps. It is a separate feature with different requirements and controls from Magic Cue. Google’s Proactive Assistance help
Android Auto is a separate interface projected to a compatible vehicle display. Google documents its car features and setup separately; those instructions do not establish that Magic Cue or Proactive Assistance cards are shown on the car screen. Google’s Android Auto requirements

Check whether your Pixel can use each feature
Google’s support pages list eligibility by model, country and, for Proactive Assistance, language. The lists below reflect Google’s pages as checked on October 3, 2026; availability can change, so check the live pages for your location before troubleshooting or choosing a device.
| Feature | Models and regions listed by Google | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Magic Cue | Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. The page also lists Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold in the United Kingdom. | For the listed AI features, Google requires the user to be at least 18 and signed in to a personal Google Account. |
| Proactive Assistance | Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold in Australia (English only), Canada (English only), India (English only), Japan (Japanese only), Malaysia (English only), Singapore (English only) and the United States (English only). Google also says Pixel 11 devices outside Ireland and the United Kingdom can use Proactive Assistance. | Gemini must be the default assistant, and Personal Intelligence must be turned on. |
See Google’s Magic Cue availability and help page and Google’s Proactive Assistance help page for current eligibility. Do not assume that eligibility for one feature means eligibility for the other.
Turn on and use Magic Cue
- On an eligible Pixel, open Settings > Magic Cue.
- Choose the suggestion types and data sources you want to allow.
- Use supported apps as usual. Google says suggestions may appear in Google Messages, Google Chat and selected third-party chat apps; in the Phone app when a contact or email is associated; in Weather around trips or events; and in other apps such as Maps, shopping, social and streaming apps.
- Review a suggestion before acting on it or sharing information. Google’s examples include surfacing a dinner reservation, destination weather or a requested photo, but the feature may not produce a suggestion for every prompt or situation. Google’s Magic Cue examples
If suggestions do not appear
- Allow time after setup: Google says Magic Cue can be used 24 hours after setup, that data is processed as the device charges, and useful suggestions may take time to appear. Charge the phone and wait at least 24 hours.
- Keep model downloads on Wi-Fi and install pending app updates.
- If you use Workspace data, enable smart features in Workspace settings.
- After restoring a device, turn Magic Cue on again: Google says its settings are not included in device backup.
Google’s troubleshooting and setup guidance is on the Magic Cue help page.
Turn on Proactive Assistance
- On an eligible Pixel, set Gemini as the default digital assistant.
- Turn on Personal Intelligence in Gemini settings.
- Open Settings > Proactive Assistance and switch the feature on.
- Review Connected apps and choose which sources to allow. Google lists sources that can include screen content and notifications, connected Personal Intelligence apps, additional apps such as Messages and Screenshots, and location.
Google says allowing more sources may improve how often or how accurately suggestions appear; that is Google’s description, not a guarantee of performance. Find requirements and controls in Google’s Proactive Assistance help.

Set up Android Auto separately
Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones; Google says a separate app download is not needed. The car or stereo must also support Android Auto. Confirm vehicle compatibility with its manufacturer.
| Connection | Google’s stated requirements |
|---|---|
| Wired | Android 9.0 or newer, an active data plan, compatible vehicle equipment and a high-quality USB cable. |
| Wireless | A compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, a compatible car or stereo, and Android 11.0 or newer for wireless projection. |
These are Android Auto connection requirements, not requirements for Magic Cue or Proactive Assistance. Google also notes that most Android Auto features may not work outside its listed countries. See Google’s Android Auto requirements.
Wired setup
- Park the car and turn on its infotainment system.
- Connect a high-quality USB cable to the vehicle and Pixel.
- Follow the prompts on the phone and car display.
First wireless setup
- Park the car and begin Bluetooth pairing between the phone and vehicle.
- Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services enabled during setup, as Google recommends.

Google’s setup guidance says to have the car in Park and allow time to finish setup before driving. Google’s Android Auto setup instructions

Proactive Assistance
Use Settings > Proactive Assistance to switch the feature off or manage Connected apps, including disabling individual apps. Google says location suggestions in At a Glance require precise location permission.
Google’s privacy descriptions
Google describes Magic Cue as operating in a secure, isolated environment on-device or in the cloud. For Proactive Assistance in messaging apps, Google says processing takes place in private, dedicated spaces on-device and in the cloud, respects the messaging app’s end-to-end encryption policy, and keeps suggestions and personal message data private unless a suggestion is accepted. These are Google’s descriptions; they do not mean that no data ever leaves the device. Double-check suggestions before sharing information. See Magic Cue privacy and controls and Proactive Assistance controls.
What about call screening and Call Notes in Android Auto?
Google has separately announced Android Auto call screening and planned Call Notes support. Those are call-related features, not evidence that Magic Cue or Proactive Assistance suggestions are integrated into Android Auto. The announcement does not establish current availability for every device or region, so check Google’s current support information before relying on either feature.
