PhantomJS can take website screenshots by running a JavaScript file that opens a page and calls page.render(). Its documentation describes Windows generally, but does not confirm Windows 11 compatibility. More importantly, the project says development is suspended and its original repository is archived, so treat the steps below as historical guidance—not a supported Windows 11 installation recipe.
Before installing: PhantomJS is discontinued
The PhantomJS project states, “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” Its original GitHub repository is archived, and the npm package phantomjs-prebuilt is deprecated. The official project page describes Windows as a platform, but does not specifically confirm Windows 11 support or identify a currently maintained Windows installer.

That distinction matters: the official quick-start explains how to run PhantomJS after it is installed and placed on PATH; it does not establish that a current, verified Windows 11 download is available. Do not assume an old binary is safe, compatible with Windows 11, or able to render modern websites correctly. PhantomJS project page · Archived source repository
What you need for the documented workflow
- A PhantomJS Windows executable from a source you can verify. This guide does not provide a download link because a current official Windows 11 installer and its integrity details have not been established.
- A JavaScript screenshot script, such as the example below.
- The executable available on your terminal’s
PATH, or its full path supplied when you run it. - A target website that the legacy PhantomJS browser can load. Older browser engines may not render current sites as they appear in up-to-date browsers.
The official build page recommends using a ready-made binary rather than building from source unless a source build is necessary. Its Windows build instructions refer to MSVC 2012 and MSVC 2013; those are dated toolchain requirements, not Windows 11 installation guidance. PhantomJS build instructions

Run PhantomJS from Windows Command Prompt or PowerShell
- Obtain and verify the executable. Locate a binary only from a source you trust, and check its version and integrity information independently. The official documentation cited here does not establish a current download location, checksum, or Windows 11-tested release.
- Make the executable available to your terminal. Add the directory containing
phantomjs.exeto WindowsPATH, or use the full executable path in the command. The official quick-start assumes PhantomJS is already installed and onPATH. - Save the screenshot script. Create a file named
screenshot.jswith the code in the next section, replacing the example URL and output filename as needed. - Open Command Prompt or PowerShell in the script’s folder. Run
phantomjs screenshot.js. This follows the documented Windows invocation pattern; it is not a claim that the command has been tested on Windows 11.
The documented command form is phantomjs [options] somescript.js [arg1 [arg2 ...]]; the command-line documentation covers PhantomJS 2.1.1. Quick-start guide · Command-line options
Write a basic website screenshot script
This is the essential documented pattern: open a URL in a PhantomJS page, then call page.render() to save an image. The example uses a viewport size of 1280 by 800 pixels and renders a PNG.

var page = require('webpage').create();
page.viewportSize = {
width: 1280,
height: 800
};
page.open('https://example.com', function (status) {
if (status !== 'success') {
console.log('Could not load the page.');
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
page.render('screenshot.png');
phantom.exit();
});
Save the file as screenshot.js, then run:
phantomjs screenshot.js
The output path in page.render() is relative to the terminal’s current working directory unless you specify an absolute path. The official screenshot guide demonstrates opening a page and rendering it to an image; its viewport setting describes the headless browser’s viewport, not a guarantee of a particular full-page capture behavior. Choose dimensions and output carefully
Viewport dimensions
Set page.viewportSize before opening the page when you want a specific browser viewport. A larger viewport changes the page’s responsive layout, so use dimensions that match the layout you need to capture. The documented viewport is not, by itself, proof that the entire page will be captured.

Image format and output path
The sample writes screenshot.png. Use a filename and format supported by the PhantomJS version you have obtained, and make sure the destination directory exists and is writable. The official screenshot documentation covers page rendering, but the legacy project should not be assumed to support every modern image workflow.
Page readiness
The example renders when PhantomJS reports that the page opened successfully. That does not establish that every image, animation, dynamically loaded component, or delayed script has finished. If the result is incomplete, a fixed wait or page-specific readiness logic may help, but exact behavior depends on the site and the old browser engine; do not treat it as a general guarantee.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
phantomjs is not recognized |
The executable directory is not on PATH, or the terminal was opened before a PATH change. |
Confirm where phantomjs.exe is located. Add its directory to PATH or run it by full path, then open a new terminal. |
| The script cannot be found | The terminal is in a different directory from screenshot.js, or the filename differs. |
Change to the script’s folder or provide the script’s full path after the executable name. |
| No screenshot file appears | The page failed to open, the output directory is invalid, or the process lacks write access. | Check the terminal’s current folder, the output filename and directory permissions. Inspect the page-open status message. |
| The capture is blank or incomplete | The page may depend on unsupported browser features, delayed content, or resources that did not load before rendering. | Check whether the site renders in an older browser engine and whether the script captures too early. Windows 11 compatibility and modern-site rendering are not established by the project documentation. |
| The executable fails to launch | The binary may be incompatible with the system, damaged, or from an untrusted or unsuitable source. | Verify the binary’s origin, version, and integrity information. No Windows 11-specific compatibility fix is established here; avoid weakening system security to run an unverified executable. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
