Pages saves as you work. The steps below cover a simple document first, followed by exporting, collaboration, and optional book and template workflows.
1. Choose a document type and template
Apple’s Pages User Guide describes every document as beginning with a template—a model to use as a starting point. In Pages, choose a template suited to the job rather than building every page from scratch. Apple Support: Create a document in Pages on Mac.

For a plain document, open Pages, select Blank or Blank Landscape in the Basic category, and start typing. For a designed document, pick a template close to your intended result, then replace its placeholder text and images. One way to identify a word-processing document is that its sidebar includes a Bookmarks tab.

Start with a simple document
- In a word-processing document, click in the page and type. In a page-layout document, choose a text box, place it on the page, and type inside it.
- To replace sample text in a template, click the placeholder and enter your own content.
- Select text you want to change, then use the Format sidebar to adjust its appearance.
For example, a one-page letter can use a heading, a few paragraphs, and a small image. Add only the objects that serve the document: Pages’ toolbar includes controls for tables, charts, text boxes, shapes, and media such as images, audio, and video. For designs with multiple text areas, Pages supports text wrapping and linked text boxes.

Choose the right document type if the layout changes
If your main concern is writing and the page count may change, word processing keeps the text flowing. If exact placement of text and objects matters more, page layout offers more control over the composition. This distinction is especially useful before you invest time arranging a design.
3. Save and find your document
Pages automatically saves changes as you work. Rename the document with a clear, descriptive name so you can find it later. If iCloud Drive is set up on your Mac, a new document saves there by default; storage location can differ if your account or settings are different. 4. Export a copy for sharing in another format
Use File > Export To, then choose a format. Exporting creates a copy, so later edits to the exported file do not change the original Pages document. Apple’s guide covers PDF, Word, EPUB, plain text, RTF, images, and Pages ’09 export. The available formats and controls can depend on the document and installed Pages version. In EPUB export, reflowable text can adapt to a reader’s screen and text-size preferences. Fixed layout is more suitable when the design relies on multiple columns or many images. Choose based on whether adaptability or preserving the page design matters more.

5. Send a copy or collaborate live
A standalone copy is appropriate for a handoff: share the Pages file or export it to a format the recipient can open. Live collaboration is different: Pages shares a document through iCloud, and collaborators can see changes as they are made. The owner chooses who can access the document and whether each person can edit or only view it.
Inviting collaborators requires an Apple Account and iCloud Drive, and compatible operating-system and app requirements apply. Some Pages features are unavailable in shared documents. For Apple’s current collaboration steps and requirements, see Collaborate on a document in Pages on Mac.

6. Make a reusable template
If you create the same kind of document repeatedly, save a finished version as a custom template: choose File > Save as Template, then add it to the template chooser or save it as a file. A custom template made on a Mac can be available on your other devices when you use the same Apple Account and iCloud Drive is turned on; it is not available in Pages for iCloud. 7. Create a book or EPUB
Pages includes book templates and can export EPUB. For a text-heavy book, reflowable layout lets readers adapt text to their screens; for a book whose design depends on fixed placement, use fixed layout. You can also add a table of contents. Apple describes making a book available for purchase or download through Apple Books, but availability on the platform is not a guarantee of commercial results. Check your Pages version
Apple’s Pages User Guide landing page identifies its guide as Pages 15.4, but availability can vary by region and change over time. To check the version installed on your Mac, open Pages and choose Pages > About Pages. Menu labels and requirements may differ as the app changes. Pages User Guide for Mac.
