To use OpenMod RCon on an Unturned server, install the OpenMod Unturned module, enable the RocketMod-compatible RCon integration, set a unique password and TCP port in the configuration used by your installation or host, restart the server, and connect with an RCon client such as mcrcon. Once authenticated, you can send server commands remotely without joining the game. Keep the RCon port behind a firewall or source-IP allowlist whenever possible; it is an administrative endpoint, not a gameplay port.

What OpenMod RCon is and how it fits into Unturned
OpenMod describes itself as a “.NET plugin framework.” On Unturned, its module loads the OpenMod runtime and integrates with the server’s command and permission systems. The RCon portion is a RocketMod-compatible TCP integration: OpenMod’s API exposes a RocketModRconClient in the OpenMod.Unturned.RocketMod.Rcon namespace, inherited from BaseTcpRconClient. That means your remote client talks to a TCP listener provided by the installed integration.

OpenMod identifies RconUser as a command actor and applies command permissions through its normal permission model. A command can therefore be rejected even when the network connection and password are correct if the RCon actor lacks the permission node required by a plugin.
RCon is separate from Unturned’s gameplay connection. You choose an RCon listener port in the OpenMod/RocketMod-compatible configuration or hosting panel, while players connect through the Unturned server ports. Do not assume that the RCon port is 27015 or that opening the gameplay port exposes RCon.

What you need before starting
- An Unturned dedicated-server installation with access to its files or a hosting panel that exposes OpenMod settings.
- The current OpenMod Unturned module package. The installation guide names the archive pattern
OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zip. - Permission to stop and restart the server.
- A TCP-capable RCon client, such as
mcrcon, on a machine that can reach the server address and port. - A unique, high-entropy RCon password. Never reuse a password from the panel, operating system, database, or another game service.
- A networking plan: the RCon TCP port, the address ranges that should be allowed to connect, and any host, cloud, router, or NAT rules required to reach it.
If a provider manages the files, ask which OpenMod/RocketMod-compatible package is installed and where its RCon fields are exposed. Configuration names differ between package versions and control panels, so copying a key from an unrelated installation can leave the listener disabled or make the server ignore your changes.
Install the OpenMod Unturned module
- Stop the server. Editing or replacing modules while the process is running can produce a partial install or leave an old process holding files open.
- Download the module archive. Use the latest OpenMod Unturned module release supplied by the OpenMod installation documentation. The archive name follows the
OpenMod.Unturned.Module-vX.X.X.zippattern. - Extract the correct folder. Inside the archive, locate the folder named
OpenMod.Unturned. Copy that folder, including its contents, into the Unturned installation’sModulesdirectory. Do not put the zip file itself inModules, and do not create an extra level such asModules/OpenMod.Unturned/OpenMod.Unturned. - Start the server once. OpenMod’s first start can take a while because it downloads its core components. Wait for that process to finish rather than stopping the server as soon as the game process appears.
- Read the startup log. Look for OpenMod loading successfully and for the RocketMod-compatible RCon component being discovered. A clean game-server start without an RCon component means the network settings will have nothing to bind to.
- Stop the server again before editing generated configuration. Many installations create configuration files only after the first successful start. Editing the generated file while the server is stopped avoids losing changes during shutdown.
If the server fails before OpenMod completes its first download, check that the module folder is in the actual Unturned installation used by the service account. A common mistake is copying files into a Steam library or test directory while the host panel starts a different instance.

Configure the RCon listener
Use the configuration belonging to your installation
- Stop the server and open the OpenMod/RocketMod-compatible RCon configuration supplied by your installed package, or open the equivalent RCon page in your host’s control panel.
- Set an RCon username if the integration exposes one. Some clients only need a password, while others send both fields.
- Set a long, unique RCon password. Store it in a password manager and avoid putting it in screenshots, public issue reports, shared tickets, shell history, or chat messages.
- Choose a dedicated TCP port that is not already used by another service or another server instance. The exact configuration key and file location vary by integration and host; use the labels shown by your installed package rather than inventing a key from a different guide.
- Save valid syntax, then start the server.
- Confirm in the server log or panel that the RCon listener started on the expected TCP port. A saved value is not proof that a process is listening.
A provider guide may show fields labelled username, password, and port and then use mcrcon with the server address and port. Treat those labels as an implementation example, not a universal schema. OpenMod, RocketMod-compatible integrations, and hosting panels can use different file names, nesting, or defaults.

Separate RCon credentials from other administration
Do not reuse the Unturned in-game administrator password, panel password, SSH credential, or database secret. RCon credentials may be entered into automation or a terminal, so a leak can grant command access even when the game account itself is protected. If you suspect exposure, stop the server, change the RCon password in the authoritative configuration, restart, and update every automation or client that uses it.
Plan Unturned ports before opening the firewall
Unturned’s command reference lists 27015 as the default base Port. The game uses two consecutive ports; the second is used implicitly for in-game traffic. If you run several instances, each needs a distinct base port and its adjacent port. This allocation is independent of the RCon TCP port.

For an Internet server, Unturned hosting documentation describes using Fake IP or port forwarding and recommends a Game Server Login Token. Those measures concern making the game server reachable and authenticated. RCon is a separate administrative exposure: open only the RCon TCP port required by your integration and restrict its source addresses where your firewall or host allows it.

Self-hosted firewall and NAT checklist
- Allow inbound TCP only on the selected RCon port.
- Prefer an allowlist containing your office, home, VPN, or automation addresses instead of allowing every Internet address.
- If the server is behind a router, forward the external RCon port to the machine and internal port where the listener is bound.
- If your provider has both a game-port allocation and an RCon allocation, use the provider’s mapped RCon value in the client.
- Do not open a broad port range just because Unturned uses a consecutive gameplay pair.
- After changing firewall or NAT rules, test from the same network where the RCon client will run; a local test can succeed even when the public route is blocked.
Connect with mcrcon
After the restart, use the server’s public address when connecting from outside its network, or its private address when connecting internally. Supply the configured RCon port and matching password. If your integration requires a username and your client supports one, provide that value as well.
mcrcon -H <server-address> -P <rcon-port> -p '<rcon-password>' "Help"The example sends Help immediately after authentication. Replace every placeholder, and check your installed client’s help output because command-line flags differ between RCon clients and builds. Quoting the password prevents shell metacharacters from being interpreted, but it still leaves the secret in process listings or shell history on some systems. For production automation, use the client’s supported secret-handling method rather than embedding a password in a publicly readable script.
A successful session should return the command response or a prompt. If the TCP connection succeeds but the command returns an authorization error, networking and authentication are working; investigate OpenMod permissions instead of changing firewall rules.

Send Unturned commands through RCon
Unturned commands can be entered in the server console or in in-game chat. Administrators using chat prefix commands with / or @. Through RCon, send the command text itself unless your particular client or integration explicitly requires a prefix. Start with a harmless query to verify that you reached the intended instance.

The command reference also includes runtime, configuration, and cheat commands. A command’s availability can depend on the server version, installed plugins, and permissions. Avoid testing destructive or cheat-related commands on a live server; use a test instance when you need to learn syntax.

OpenMod automatically assigns permissions to commands. Its command guidance favors command metadata and permission checks over hardcoded tests for a particular actor type. In practical terms, an RCon session is identified as RconUser, but that label alone does not guarantee unrestricted access to every OpenMod or plugin command.
- Confirm that the login itself succeeds. A password or username error is an authentication problem, not a permission problem.
- Identify whether the denied command comes from Unturned, OpenMod, or a third-party plugin.
- Find the permission node documented by that command or plugin.
- Inspect the permissions granted to the RCon actor or group in your OpenMod installation.
- Reload permissions or restart the server using the method supported by your package, then retry with a non-destructive command.
Do not solve a denied command by granting a blanket administrator role without understanding the scope. Narrow permissions reduce the damage from an accidentally exposed credential or an automation bug.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting for OpenMod RCon
Both approaches can run the same remote-command workflow. The difference is who controls files, network edges, and recovery operations.

Choose based on the control you need, not on the assumption that a managed panel uses the same paths or defaults as a self-hosted installation.
Troubleshoot a failed mcrcon connection
“Connection refused”
- Make sure the Unturned process is running and has completed OpenMod startup.
- Check the log or panel for confirmation that the RCon component loaded and attempted to bind.
- Verify the port in
mcrconexactly matches the configured RCon port, including any provider mapping. - Confirm that another service or second Unturned instance is not already using that port.
A refusal usually means no process is listening at the destination, or an active network device is rejecting the connection. Changing the password will not fix a listener that never started.
Timeout or “no route” errors
- Check host, cloud, and operating-system firewalls for an inbound TCP rule on the RCon port.
- For a home or office server, verify NAT forwarding to the correct internal machine and port.
- Use the correct public address when connecting from outside the server’s network.
- Check whether the provider requires a separate allocated or mapped RCon port.
- Test from an allowlisted source address; an intentional allowlist rejection can look like a timeout.
Authentication failure
- Re-enter the exact password from the authoritative configuration, preserving capitalization and punctuation.
- Check whether the integration expects a username as well as a password.
- Make sure you edited the configuration used by this server instance, not a template or another installation.
- If the credential may have appeared in logs or shell history, rotate it and restart before testing again.
Commands are denied after login
Inspect the command’s OpenMod permission node and the permissions assigned to the RconUser actor or its group. A successful TCP login proves only that the RCon listener accepted the credentials; it does not grant every plugin permission.
You reached the wrong server
Compare the response from Players with the expected instance. Then verify the base gameplay port, its adjacent port, the RCon mapping, and the panel’s server identifier. When multiple Unturned servers share a host, a reused port or incorrect NAT rule can send an otherwise valid login to a different instance.

Configuration changes are ignored
- Stop the server completely, including any automatically restarted process.
- Locate the configuration file or panel section actually used by the installed OpenMod/RCon package.
- Check syntax and indentation if the format is structured.
- Save the change, start the server, and read the startup log for the effective port and listener status.
- If the host regenerates files, use its documented configuration interface or ask which fields override the file.
Operate RCon safely after it works
- Restrict the listener to trusted source addresses, a VPN, or a private network whenever your environment permits.
- Use a dedicated password and rotate it when staff, automation, or hosting access changes.
- Keep the RCon TCP port separate from the gameplay port pair and document the mapping for each server instance.
- Review startup and command logs for unexpected logins or commands, and protect those logs because they may contain operational details.
- Use
HelpandPlayersfor verification before issuingKick,Ban, configuration, or cheat commands. - Test automation against a staging server first and make scripts fail safely when the target address or port changes.
- Back up the server data before maintenance that could affect world state;
Saveis a command, not a complete backup.
Final verification checklist
- The
OpenMod.Unturnedfolder is directly inside the UnturnedModulesdirectory. - The first startup completed OpenMod’s core-component download and the RCon integration appears in the log.
- A unique RCon password, optional username, and dedicated TCP port are configured in the active installation or panel.
- The firewall, NAT, and provider mapping expose only the intended RCon path.
