Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To stream from OBS Studio to YouTube, verify that your channel can go live, create or select a YouTube Live event, paste its stream key into OBS, build a scene, check audio and output settings, then test the preview before starting the broadcast. OBS is free; the right settings depend on your computer, scene and available upload speed.
Before you set up OBS, check YouTube Live eligibility
YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility requirements for your account before configuring OBS; access and interface details can change.

Create a YouTube event and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream. In Live Control Room, find the stream key and stream URL for the event.
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube from the service list, and enter the key provided for the event. OBS documents this connection in its overview.
- Keep the stream key private: YouTube says it works like a password. Never share it in a screenshot or public post. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in OBS. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Build a simple OBS scene
A scene is the layout viewers see; sources are the items placed in it. Start with only what the broadcast needs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard if it did not appear the first time OBS opened. The wizard suggests a starting configuration; it cannot guarantee a stable stream on every setup. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing before a real broadcast.
- Create a scene, then use the Sources panel’s add control to choose the relevant input: display or window capture for a presentation, game capture where supported, or Video Capture Source for a webcam or capture card. Images and text can be added as optional overlays.
- Arrange sources in the preview. Check that each is enabled and that overlays or captures are layered so they do not cover important content. For webcam setup, OBS’s webcam FAQ covers adding and positioning a Video Capture Source and applying filters such as Chroma Key.
Set audio, resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Check audio first
Speak into the intended microphone and play any desktop audio the audience should hear. Watch the Audio Mixer meters in OBS. If a meter does not move, check Settings → Audio for the correct input or output device, and make sure the relevant source is not muted.

Match video settings to the computer and connection
In Settings → Video, Base (Canvas) Resolution is the size of the OBS scene layout; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the encoded resolution sent to YouTube. Choose an FPS the computer can sustain. Sixty frames per second can require more processing than 30 fps, and a complex scene adds load. OBS’s system requirements explain why performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene—not just a single minimum specification.
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as a range, not a universal preset
For H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe frequency (no more than four seconds). Its recommended H.264 bitrate ranges are:

These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not settings every OBS user should copy. Choose according to the source material, computer performance and measured upload capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check its live encoder page again before streaming because supported settings and guidance can change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Leave bandwidth headroom
Run a speed test on the connection the streaming computer will actually use. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Other people or devices using the connection reduce what is available to OBS, so do not set the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s best-case upload result. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover bandwidth and testing.

Test the stream before going live
- Use a test stream or an unlisted/private event where appropriate.
- Include representative movement and every audio source you plan to use; a still screen alone will not reveal motion or encoding issues.
- Check OBS’s audio meters and status, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Fix problems before the audience arrives.
OBS strongly encourages running a test for a few minutes rather than jumping into a first stream. YouTube likewise recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Treat the wizard as a starting point, not a substitute for this end-to-end check.
Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems
| Symptom | What to check and fix |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm live streaming is available to the channel and the correct event is active. Check the YouTube service selection and the event’s current stream key in Settings → Stream. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. |
| Webcam preview is blank | Confirm a Video Capture Source exists, is enabled and points to the intended device. Make sure it is visible above sources that could cover it, then adjust its size and position. |
| No microphone or desktop sound | Speak or play audio while watching the OBS Audio Mixer. In Settings → Audio, select the intended devices and check that the relevant source is not muted. |
| Dropped frames or unstable stream | Compare the chosen bitrate with a speed test on the active connection and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If the connection cannot sustain it, reduce bitrate; if needed, lower output resolution or frame rate and test again. |
| High CPU or GPU load | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and use the wizard as a starting point. Hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to the GPU, but availability and results depend on the hardware generation and drivers; do not switch encoders blindly. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights to every video, song, image and other material in the stream. A live test does not grant permission to use copyrighted content, and YouTube’s platform policies and channel eligibility apply whether the stream is sent through OBS or another encoder. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements and address any restrictions shown in Studio before the event. Avoid assuming that reused material is acceptable simply because it is available online.
