On Windows, you can run OBS Studio in portable mode by using the ZIP build and placing an empty portable_mode file in its extracted folder, or by launching OBS with the --portable option. Add a looping Media Source for one video or a VLC Video source for a playlist, then test the media, audio, stream settings and startup command before leaving the PC unattended. Portable mode keeps OBS configuration with the application; it does not move or bundle the video files used by your scene.
What portable mode does—and what it does not
Portable mode stores OBS configuration alongside the application instead of using the usual user-profile configuration location. This is useful for keeping a dedicated OBS setup separate or moving the application folder between locations.

It does not make scene media portable. The OBS Project states: “At this time, files used within the scene collection (images, media) are not portable, even when in portable mode.” Keep the video at a stable path on the dedicated PC. If you move the OBS folder or use it on another device, update the scene collection’s media paths or make sure the same paths exist there. Set up OBS portable mode on Windows
- Download and extract the OBS ZIP distribution. Extract it into a folder you control, such as a folder under your user directory. OBS advises against extracting it into
Program Files. - Enable portable mode. In the extracted OBS folder—the same folder that contains the
bindirectory—create an empty file namedportable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, skip the marker file and start OBS with the--portablelaunch option. - Launch OBS. Run
bin/64bit/obs64.exe. Confirm that the profile and scene collection you intend to use load correctly. - Keep the folder and media paths stable. Portable settings stay with the OBS application folder, but referenced videos and other scene files remain at their own paths.
Use the marker file when this copy should always use portable mode. Use --portable when you want to place the choice in a shortcut or launch command. The OBS documentation also describes launch options for selecting a profile, scene collection or scene.
Make a video or playlist loop
Loop one video with Media Source
- In the scene where you want the video, add a Media Source.
- In the source properties, select the local video file and enable Loop.
- Apply the settings, then watch the source through the end of the file to confirm it starts again as expected.
OBS documents the Loop option, but that does not guarantee gapless playback for every file and computer. Test the actual video on the dedicated PC before relying on it unattended.

Loop an ordered playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC on the PC. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source and choose the files for the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist, choose the desired order or shuffle behavior, and verify how the source behaves when it becomes visible.
- Play through the playlist on the target PC and check both picture and sound.
VLC Video adds an installed VLC dependency; a single Media Source does not require this playlist setup. OBS describes these source options in its Media Sources documentation.

Prepare the live stream and test it
Before unattended operation, configure the destination service, server and stream key in OBS, and confirm that the selected output settings fit both your upload capacity and the service’s limits. There is no universal bitrate established for every connection or platform. OBS identifies automatic reconnect as an Advanced setting, but it does not promise a particular uptime or recovery result for every setup.

- Confirm the intended profile, scene collection and scene are loaded.
- Check that the local media path resolves and the file or playlist plays through its loop.
- Watch the audio meters and listen to a short test output. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking output settings and testing before going live.
- Verify the destination, server, stream key, output settings and available upload capacity.
- Run a test stream and confirm the intended picture and sound arrive at the destination.
For YouTube, use content you have the rights to stream and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization policies. A looping format by itself does not establish that the content complies with copyright rules or YouTube’s reused-content requirements.

OBS supports launch parameters including --portable (also -p), --startstreaming, --collection, --profile and --scene. For Windows automation, OBS says to set the working directory—the shortcut’s Start in… field—to the folder containing obs64.exe. Consult OBS’s Launch Parameters documentation for the supported syntax and parameter values.

A launch parameter can request that OBS start streaming, but it does not configure every requirement for an unattended PC. Windows sign-in, power recovery and a watchdog or restart strategy are separate system-administration tasks; the cited OBS instructions do not provide a complete setup for them. Test the actual shortcut or scheduled task, including its working directory and destination, before depending on it.

- OBS opens with the wrong configuration: Check that the marker file is in the extracted application root, or that the launch command includes
--portable. Confirm you started the intendedobs64.exe. - The video is missing after moving the folder: Portable mode does not relocate scene media. Restore the video at its original path or update the source path in OBS.
- A playlist source is unavailable: Install VLC and match its bitness to OBS—64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS—then reopen and test the VLC Video source.
- The loop does not behave as expected: Confirm Loop is enabled for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video, then test playback through the end. Playback continuity can depend on the file and machine.
- The stream does not start from the automated launch: Check the OBS launch parameters and Windows Start in… directory. Test the command interactively and verify destination and stream-key settings.
- There is no sound or the stream is unstable: Check OBS audio meters and perform a short test. Revisit output settings, available upload capacity and service limits; do not assume one bitrate fits every connection.
