Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, test with the real audio and video you plan to use, and adjust output settings to match your computer and upload connection.
What you need before you start
OBS Studio composes your broadcast from scenes and sources, then sends the resulting feed to YouTube. A basic setup can use a computer, an internet connection, and the sources you already have: for example, a screen capture and microphone, or a webcam and microphone. A dedicated camera, microphone, capture card, or hardware encoder is not a general prerequisite.

- Install OBS Studio from the official OBS Project website for your operating system.
- Sign in to YouTube and open YouTube Studio so you can create or select an encoder stream.
- Choose an upload connection you can test under the conditions you expect to stream in. Other people and devices sharing the network can reduce the bandwidth available to your computer.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide and overview were published on 2021-08-25; YouTube Help’s pages cited here were retrieved on 2026-10-03 and do not display publication dates. Menu labels and available features can change, so use the current YouTube Live Control Room values rather than a server address or key copied from an old tutorial.
Set up OBS and choose a starting configuration
- Open OBS Studio. If the Auto-Configuration Wizard does not appear automatically, select Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Answer the wizard’s questions about what you want to do. It takes intended use, computer resources, and network conditions into account, then suggests an initial configuration.
- Run a test using the sources and output settings you will actually use. Treat the wizard’s result as a starting point, not proof that the computer or connection can sustain a stream.
OBS warns that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record adequately. The encoding method, output resolution, frame rate, and complexity of the scene all affect performance.

Create a scene and add video sources
A scene is the layout OBS sends to YouTube. A source is an element in that layout. Click the plus button in the Sources dock to add the inputs you need; the available choices depend on your operating system and setup.
Choose sources for the kind of stream
- Talking to camera: Add a webcam or other video capture device. You can stream without a camera if you do not need to appear on screen.
- Presentations or software demonstrations: Add a display or window capture, then add a microphone if you want narration.
- Gameplay: Add an appropriate game capture source where available, or use another suitable capture source. On Windows, OBS documents a game capture source.
- On-screen labels or visuals: Add text and image sources if they help viewers follow the stream.
Check size, crop, and layer order
Use the OBS preview to check that each source fits the canvas, is not cropped unexpectedly, and does not cover something important. Sources higher in the list can obscure sources below them. For example, a small camera view can sit over a screen capture, but check that it does not block text or controls your viewers need to see.

Check microphone and desktop audio
- Look at the Audio Mixer while speaking into the microphone and while playing any desktop audio that should be heard.
- If a meter does not move, open Settings → Audio and select the intended device for that input.
- Make a recording or run a private or unlisted test, then listen back. Check for missing, muted, or incorrectly routed sound before you stream publicly.
OBS’s default setup captures desktop audio and microphone input, but the defaults may not match the devices you want. Confirm the meters and listen to a test rather than assuming sound is routed correctly.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream.
- In Live Control Room, copy the current stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if that preset is available; otherwise enter the URL and key from Live Control Room in the matching server and key fields.
- Apply the settings, then start sending the stream from OBS.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check the image and sound, and review the stream-health information.
- When the preview and test look right, click Go live in YouTube. When the event is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from OBS as the interfaces direct.
YouTube describes the stream key as a password-like credential that identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not show it on screen or share it. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, when the encoder supports it; use the current destination and available OBS preset.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
There is no single best setting for every computer or connection. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more from the encoder and upload connection; OBS notes that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard’s suggestion, then test the chosen output with representative motion and sound.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following are the H.264 recommended video bitrates listed in YouTube Help’s encoder-settings table, retrieved 2026-10-03. The page does not display a publication year. These are recommendations for the stated codec, resolution, and frame rate—not guarantees of quality or a direction to choose the highest rate.

|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s table gives different recommendations for AV1 and H.265 as well. Codec choices depend on what your encoder and computer support, so do not assume every combination is available in every OBS build. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance and the options actually available in your setup.

Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom, according to its streaming tips page retrieved 2026-10-03 (publication year not displayed). Treat that margin as room for reliability, not as extra stream bitrate. Run an upload speed test and account for other devices sharing the connection; choose a stream bitrate the connection can sustain in practice.

Test before the event and monitor the stream
- Test with the same scenes, sources, movement, and audio you expect to use live.
- Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, inspect its preview, and review stream-health messages before clicking Go live.
- Set up ahead of time and check that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page as intended.
- During the event, keep an eye on video and audio; an OBS connection indicator alone does not confirm that viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast.
Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming preview | Confirm OBS is sending, then recheck that the server URL and stream key are current and copied into the correct fields in Settings → Stream. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the key saved in OBS before sending again. |
| Audio is missing or silent | Watch the Audio Mixer meters while speaking or playing the intended audio. If they do not move, choose the correct input in Settings → Audio; make a test recording or private/unlisted test and listen back. |
| The computer struggles or output is unstable | As a diagnostic, simplify the scene or reduce resolution or frame rate, then test again. OBS identifies encoding method, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors; this adjustment is not a guaranteed fix. |
| The feed appears connected but viewers may not receive a healthy stream | Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, and monitor audio and video during the event. |
