OBS does not have a built-in playlist that automatically queues whole scenes. For a repeating sequence of prerecorded files, use a VLC Video source in an OBS scene and enable Loop Playlist. For a rotation between different layouts, create separate scenes and switch between them with transitions; scene collections organize those scenes but do not schedule them to change automatically.
First, decide what you mean by a “scene playlist”
There are two different workflows behind that phrase. OBS’s documented playlist feature plays media files from a VLC Video source. A sequence of whole OBS scenes is different: scene collections save arrangements, and transitions let you change the live scene, but the official guides reviewed do not describe a built-in automatic scene scheduler.

- Repeat video or audio files: use one scene with a VLC Video source and a media playlist.
- Show different compositions: create a scene for each layout and switch between them manually or with a separately verified automation tool.
Set up a repeating media playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene or select the one where the playlist should appear.
- Add the source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Load the files. In the source properties, add the media files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play.
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list. Enable shuffle only if you want the order to vary. Check the source’s visibility behavior: by default, OBS stops a VLC Video source when it is hidden and restarts it when visible. That matters if you reuse the source in multiple scenes.
- Check the result before streaming. Preview the scene and let the playlist run through file changes and at least one loop. Confirm that framing, audio levels, and transitions between files are acceptable.
These steps create a repeating sequence of media inside one scene; they do not automatically switch among whole scenes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse separate scenes for different layouts
For a title card, prerecorded segment, camera view, or break screen, create a separate scene for each composition. Add the appropriate sources to each, then use OBS scene transitions when changing the live output. This gives you distinct layouts, but a transition is not itself a schedule.

Scene Collections save sets of scenes and sources for different productions. They do not save output settings; OBS says to use Profiles for those. See the OBS Scene Collections guide. The OBS Studio Overview Guide covers scenes, sources, transitions, and stream setup.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- Confirm channel eligibility first. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned start. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup help for current requirements.
- Get the stream details in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube and obtain its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
- Configure OBS. Open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect or enter the server and stream key as prompted. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the encoder workflow.
- Test the complete path. Check the OBS preview, audio, playlist loop, and YouTube’s stream preview before starting the public broadcast. OBS recommends testing the configuration and scenes before the first live broadcast.
YouTube’s help page lists platform limits of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Those are platform limits, not targets for a single always-on setup.

Plan for the “always-on” part
A local OBS setup depends on the computer, power, network connection, and media source continuing to work. OBS and YouTube’s setup documentation explain how to configure and test a stream; they do not promise unattended uptime or provide one universal recovery arrangement. Decide how you will notice a failure and restart the stream, and test the recovery process rather than assuming the broadcast will run indefinitely.
Also confirm that you have the rights to stream every video and audio file. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is a starting point for its live-stream rules; check current YouTube policies and the rights for your specific material before broadcasting. A working technical loop does not establish permission to reuse the content.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- VLC Video is missing or will not play: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops when you switch scenes: OBS’s default VLC Video behavior is to stop the source when hidden and restart it when visible. Check the source’s visibility options and whether the source is shared or duplicated across scenes.
- The playlist ends instead of repeating: reopen the VLC Video source properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The wrong file order plays: inspect and reorder the playlist in the source properties; turn off shuffle if you need a fixed sequence.
- You cannot go live yet: verify the channel and check for live-stream restrictions. If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- The stream key is rejected or the stream connects to the wrong event: retrieve the key associated with the intended YouTube stream and update OBS under Settings → Stream. Keep the key private.
- The stream stops after a power, network, or source failure: a local OBS broadcast relies on those components. Restore the failed component and restart the encoder, then verify the live preview in YouTube; the reviewed setup guides do not specify a universal automatic failover.
