For one repeating classroom video, add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For several videos, use VLC Video, create a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Those settings repeat media; they do not guarantee that a computer, internet connection, OBS, or YouTube will stay online around the clock.
Choose the right OBS source
| Need | OBS source | Loop control | Dependency and behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video | Media Source | Loop | Plays a supported local file; no VLC installation is needed. |
| Repeat several files | VLC Video | Loop Playlist; shuffle is optional | Requires VLC. OBS recommends 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. By default, playback stops when the source is hidden and restarts when it becomes visible. |
OBS lists local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. Media Source supports audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide for the documented formats and source properties.

Set up one looping video
- In OBS, select the scene for the classroom stream. If you do not have one, create a scene in the Scenes dock.
- In the Sources dock, select + → Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and select OK.
- In the Media Source properties, select Browse and choose the video file, then enable Loop.
- Set the other playback options deliberately. Restart playback when source becomes active restarts the file when the source becomes active. Show nothing when playback ends hides the media after it finishes; leave it off if you want the last frame to remain visible when the file ends. Close file when inactive unloads the file while the source is inactive, which can cause a brief reload delay when it is shown again.
- Select OK, then check the preview. Resize or position the source to fit the canvas and confirm that the picture and sound are right.
For a single clip, Media Source is the direct choice. Its scene behavior matters if you switch scenes: a hidden source may be restarted when shown, and an inactive file may need time to reload. OBS describes scenes and sources in its Sources Guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet up a looping playlist
- Install VLC before configuring OBS. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC so the VLC Video source is available.
- In the classroom scene’s Sources dock, select + → VLC Video. If the option is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches the OBS requirement.
- In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the list. Enable shuffle only if you want the playback order randomized rather than following the playlist order.
- Choose the visibility behavior with care. OBS documents stop-when-hidden and restart-when-visible as the default. If you change scenes, verify that stopping and restarting is suitable for the lesson and that playback resumes as expected.
- Select OK, then preview the playlist and listen for audio before you connect to YouTube.
VLC Video is useful when the lesson comprises multiple files; VLC is an additional dependency, not a requirement for looping one file.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Confirm that your channel can livestream. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says channels must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance, since platform rules can change.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream. In the encoder setup, copy the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details as prompted. YouTube documents the encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly or include it in a recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS.
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream. In Live Control Room, check the preview, confirm the event’s access settings, and monitor picture and sound before directing viewers to it.
OBS’s looping controls determine what plays in the scene; YouTube’s encoder settings connect that scene to the live event. Neither replaces a test of the complete path from the classroom video to the audience.
Plan for a stream that really needs to run all day
A media source can repeat indefinitely while OBS is running, but a 24/7 broadcast also depends on the computer staying powered, OBS continuing to operate, a working network connection, and YouTube accepting the incoming stream. A power cut, software failure, or connectivity disruption can interrupt it. A wired Ethernet connection may be a practical choice for a classroom computer, but no cable by itself ensures uninterrupted service.

- Test the full setup in advance, including the playlist transitions, audio levels, YouTube preview, and who can access the event.
- Check that available upload bandwidth exceeds the stream’s bitrate with headroom. YouTube recommends allowing for network capacity and warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream; see its streaming tips.
- Monitor the stream during operation and identify who will respond if OBS, the computer, the network, or YouTube interrupts it. Do not treat a successful loop test as proof of unattended uptime.
- If you need a replay, make a separate recording and verify that it is usable. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 stream will produce a complete archive; test the exact workflow and check current YouTube guidance if a replay matters.
Classroom content and copyright checks
Before putting a lesson on a public or unlisted live stream, confirm that you have permission to use the video, music, images, and other material in it. A classroom context does not, by itself, establish that you may rebroadcast copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s current requirements and restrictions for your channel and content, and use material you own, have licensed, or are otherwise entitled to stream. Also check whether the stream should be public, unlisted, or private for your students and school.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops after one play | Loop is off, or the chosen end-of-playback behavior hides the source. | Open Media Source properties and enable Loop. Review Show nothing when playback ends if the file is not looping as intended. |
| The VLC Video source is missing | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not meet the OBS requirement. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen or recheck the source list. |
| The playlist stops when changing scenes | The source is hidden, and its stop/restart visibility behavior is active. | Review VLC Video visibility behavior and test a scene switch. Confirm whether playback should restart or continue for the lesson. |
| A video takes a moment to appear after switching back | The source was unloaded while inactive or needs to restart when active. | Review Close file when inactive and Restart playback when source becomes active on a Media Source. |
| YouTube has no preview or the stream disconnects | Encoder details may be wrong, the key may have changed, or the computer/network/YouTube connection may have failed. | Verify the stream URL and key in OBS against Live Control Room, inspect the preview, check upload capacity and connection stability, and follow the recovery plan. |
| The broadcast works but no complete replay appears | The stream ran longer than the automatic-archive duration confirmed in YouTube’s cited encoder guidance. | Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full. Test the workflow and make a separate recording if you need a dependable replay. |
