You can loop a video file into a YouTube Live broadcast with FFmpeg and NVIDIA NVENC, but only if your VPS actually exposes a compatible NVIDIA GPU and driver. The basic setup is: verify NVENC on the instance, create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key, configure FFmpeg for YouTube’s ingest requirements, then test and supervise the process. A running FFmpeg command alone is not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 streaming.
What you need before starting
- A VPS that exposes an NVIDIA GPU to the environment where FFmpeg will run. A plan name or GPU advertised by a provider does not by itself prove that NVENC is available inside your instance or container.
- A working NVIDIA driver and an FFmpeg build that exposes the NVENC encoder you intend to use.
- A media file with a video stream and, if wanted, an audio stream.
- A YouTube channel eligible to create a live stream, plus its ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- Sustained outbound network capacity with headroom above the configured video bitrate.
NVENC is a dedicated hardware encoding block. FFmpeg’s documentation cautions that runtime hardware acceleration depends on suitable hardware and drivers, so verify the actual VPS rather than assuming the encoder will work. A CPU-only VPS can use a software encoder instead, but that is not an NVENC setup.
1. Check that the VPS can use NVENC
Run these checks from the same host or container in which you will run FFmpeg:
nvidia-smi -L— NVIDIA documents this command for listing available GPUs. Confirm that the instance sees the expected device.ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders— inspect the output forh264_nvenc. NVIDIA’s guide also nameshevc_nvencandav1_nvenc, but their presence and suitability depend on the GPU, driver and FFmpeg build.- Check the encoder options with
ffmpeg -hide_banner -h encoder=h264_nvenc. Supported rate-control options and preset names can vary by build and driver. - Run a short encode test on the actual instance before configuring an ongoing broadcast. An encoder listed by FFmpeg is not a substitute for testing that it can initialize and encode on this host.
If the GPU is not listed or the encode fails with a hardware or device error, check that the VPS or container exposes the GPU, that the driver is installed and compatible, and that the process has permission to access the device. NVIDIA’s guide describes GPU selection with -hwaccel_device where multiple GPUs are available. Do not proceed on the assumption that NVENC is active until an encode succeeds.

2. Create the YouTube Live destination and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Use YouTube’s supplied RTMPS destination details in FFmpeg. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the exact ingest details provided for the stream rather than guessing the path.
- Keep the stream key in a protected configuration or environment variable. YouTube describes it as the encoder’s password and address: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the FFmpeg configuration that uses it.
Do not commit a key to a public script repository, paste it into a public command example, or leave it in logs that others can read.
3. Choose resolution, bitrate and keyframe interval
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the resolution, frame rate and codec you plan to send. For H.264, YouTube’s settings page gives these figures:

| Output profile | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder-setting figures, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network can sustain the stream. Choose an output your instance and connection can maintain, and leave network headroom above the configured stream bitrate. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. It supports RTMP/RTMPS and documents H.264, H.265 and AV1; confirm that the chosen codec is supported by both your encoder and intended ingest profile. YouTube’s guidance is to test before starting a live stream.
The example below uses H.264 at 1080p30 settings, a 14 Mbps target, and a 60-frame GOP (two seconds at 30 fps). It does not resize the input, so the file’s dimensions must already match the intended output, or you must add an appropriate scaling filter. For another resolution or frame rate, consult YouTube’s current table and adjust the output accordingly. YouTube also notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering; select a latency mode based on whether real-time interaction matters.

4. Loop the file with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube
This example assumes /srv/media/loop.mp4 contains video and audio, with audio that can be encoded as AAC. Replace the generic RTMPS destination with the ingest URL and protected key supplied by YouTube. Keep the key out of a publicly shared script.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/media/loop.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v h264_nvenc -preset p4 -tune hq
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
What the important options do
-rereads the file at its native rate, which is appropriate when using a file as a live source.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It appears before-ibecause FFmpeg input options apply to the next input.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream;-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream if one exists. Remove or change the audio mapping if the source has no audio or uses a different track.-c:v h264_nvencselects NVIDIA’s H.264 encoder. The preset and tune options in the example are illustrative; check the options supported by your installed build.-r 30sets the output frame rate to 30 fps.-g 60and-keyint_min 60target a two-second GOP at that frame rate.-b:v,-maxrateand-bufsizeset bitrate-related values. These flags alone should not be treated as proof that the encoder is using explicit CBR. Check the accepted rate-control options with-h encoder=h264_nvenc, set the supported CBR mode if available, and verify the resulting stream.-c:a aacencodes audio as AAC rather than copying the source audio. Change the audio settings if the file’s audio or your intended output requires it.-f flvspecifies the streaming output container used with the RTMP-family destination.
This is a starting point, not a universally validated command. The input may have different streams, dimensions, frame rate or audio; NVENC option names vary across FFmpeg and NVIDIA versions; and YouTube supplies destination details per stream. Check the actual file with FFmpeg before broadcasting, and adapt the mapping, scaling, audio and encoder options to match it.

5. Test the stream before relying on it
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream, not the intended public broadcast.
- Use test footage with representative motion and audio. A static or silent clip may not reveal problems that appear with the real program.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and messages while FFmpeg is sending. Check that the received resolution, frame rate and bitrate are consistent with the profile you chose.
- Confirm that the file loops as expected and that the audio is present and synchronized before making the stream public.
- Test the actual host’s response to a network interruption or FFmpeg failure. Do not assume a reconnect or recovery behavior without observing it on your setup.
6. Keep the process running and recover from failures
A shell-launched FFmpeg process can stop when the host reboots, the connection fails or the input becomes unreadable. For a continuous deployment, run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor, configure restart-on-failure, retain logs and alert on missed restarts or unhealthy ingest. The exact configuration depends on your Linux distribution and supervisor; no single service configuration applies to every VPS.
A restart policy can bring FFmpeg back after a process exit, but it does not prove that the stream is healthy or that the encoder can reconnect correctly. Monitor both the process and YouTube’s stream health, and verify recovery behavior on the selected instance before relying on it unattended.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
h264_nvenc is missing from the encoder list |
The FFmpeg build does not include the encoder. | Check ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders on the instance. Use a build that exposes NVENC, then test the encoder on the actual host. |
| FFmpeg lists NVENC but cannot initialize it | The GPU is not accessible to the runtime, or the driver, permissions or hardware support is unsuitable. | Run nvidia-smi -L in the same environment, verify device access and driver compatibility, and run a short encode test. |
| YouTube reports ingest or stream-health problems | The destination details, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval or sustained network capacity may not match the intended profile. | Check Live Control Room messages, confirm the RTMPS URL and key, compare the outgoing settings with YouTube’s encoder guidance, and test with adequate network headroom. |
| There is no audio, or FFmpeg exits while mapping streams | The file may have no audio stream, or the selected stream differs from the example’s assumption. | Inspect the file’s streams and adjust -map and audio encoding. The optional ? on the audio map avoids requiring that stream, but it does not create audio. |
| The stream stops after FFmpeg exits or the VPS reboots | The process is not supervised, or a restart does not address the underlying host, input or network problem. | Use a process supervisor with restart-on-failure and retained logs; alert on restarts and stream-health loss, then test recovery on the actual host. |
| The stream key may have leaked | The key was exposed in a script, log or message. | Reset it in Live Control Room and update the protected configuration used by FFmpeg. |

Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Looping a file technically does not grant permission to broadcast it or guarantee that a channel can monetize it. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies for your channel. A continuous stream can also keep repeating the same material; assess whether that fits YouTube’s rules and the expectations of your viewers before making it public.
