You can use cron to launch FFmpeg at a set time, but cron is a scheduler, not a stream monitor: it will not verify YouTube accepted the feed or automatically supervise FFmpeg after launch. Set up the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, build an FFmpeg command for your specific input, schedule it under the correct Linux account, capture logs, and test the scheduled path in YouTube’s preview before relying on it.
Before you schedule an FFmpeg stream
Confirm that the YouTube channel can go live before troubleshooting Linux. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the account holder must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview for current eligibility details.
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. In its encoder settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Check that the stream’s privacy and scheduling settings match the event. The URL and key are specific to the stream settings shown in your account; do not assume a URL copied from another example will work.
Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, shell history, logs, and process listings accessible to other users. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the protected encoder configuration. YouTube explains stream-key management in its stream key help.

Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than copying an unrelated bitrate. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. The recommendations below are H.264 examples from YouTube’s encoder settings page accessed in 2026:
| Video mode | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for the specified H.264 modes, not guarantees that your connection or encoder can sustain them. Choose a quality your upload connection can reliably carry and use YouTube’s current table for other codecs or modes. Test the connection before the event. The same page covers YouTube encoder settings.

Prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. In Live Control Room, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL exactly as shown, including its server and path; confirm the FFmpeg build supports the protocol. YouTube’s instructions for finding the endpoint are at its stream URL and key help page. If an SSL connection error persists, YouTube’s connection troubleshooting mentions port 443 as a possible setting; check your network and endpoint rather than changing the URL by guesswork.
Build an FFmpeg command for your actual input
FFmpeg’s command structure places global options first, then input options and the input, followed by output options and the output destination. A file, capture device, generated source, or network feed may need different input options, so this is a pattern to adapt—not a universal copy-and-run command. Replace every bracketed placeholder, choose a bitrate and keyframe interval that match your intended output, and use the exact URL and key from Live Control Room.

-g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL -keyint_min KEYFRAME_INTERVAL

/usr/bin/ffmpegis an example absolute path; confirm where FFmpeg is installed on your system./absolute/path/to/inputis a placeholder for the real input. The-reoption is commonly relevant when reading a file in real time; input type and timing requirements vary.VIDEO_BITRATE,VIDEO_BUFFER, andAUDIO_BITRATEare placeholders, not literal values. Select values appropriate to your chosen YouTube mode and verify them against the current recommendations.KEYFRAME_INTERVALmust reflect the frame rate and the keyframe timing you intend. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds; check the resulting interval for your frame rate.- The example transcodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC. Transcoding can set the output format but uses CPU. Stream-copying can avoid re-encoding only if the source streams already meet YouTube’s accepted settings.
- The URL shown is deliberately incomplete. Use the exact RTMPS endpoint and key provided for your stream; never publish a real key in an example or shared script.
Option support and valid values depend on the FFmpeg build, input, and output. Check the local FFmpeg documentation and test the command interactively before scheduling it. For background use, FFmpeg’s official FAQ recommends -nostdin or redirecting standard input from /dev/null, so the process does not wait for a console that cron does not provide.
Schedule the command with cron
Install the job in the Linux account that should own the FFmpeg process. A user crontab runs commands as its owner. The cited Linux cron documentation describes /bin/sh as the default shell and sets HOME and LOGNAME from the crontab owner, but cron does not promise an interactive login shell, graphical session, working directory, or your usual PATH. Use absolute paths and verify behavior on your distribution.

- Create a protected script. Put the tested FFmpeg command in a script with an absolute path. Restrict access to the script and any configuration containing the stream key. Avoid exposing the key in a world-readable file or command history.
- Set the working directory and environment explicitly if needed. Cron may start in a different directory and with a smaller environment than your terminal. Use absolute paths for the input, executable, script, and logs. Add only the environment variables your setup actually requires.
- Edit the correct crontab. Run
crontab -eas the account that should run the stream. A crontab schedule has five time and date fields followed by the command. For example,0 18 * * * /absolute/path/to/start-stream.shlaunches the script at 18:00 each day according to that system’s cron timezone. Change the schedule to the intended date and time; this sample repeats daily. - Capture output. Redirect standard output and errors to a protected log, for example by appending
>> /absolute/path/to/ffmpeg.log 2>&1to the command. Alternatively, configure cron mail handling, such asMAILTO, and make sure mail is monitored. Cron output may be mailed to the owner or configured recipient. - Prevent overlap. If an earlier run could still be active when the next scheduled launch occurs, use a suitable lock or wrapper so multiple FFmpeg processes do not compete for the same stream. Cron does not provide a general duplicate-process safeguard.
For cron’s scheduling and environment behavior, consult the Linux crontab man page. Cron starts scheduled commands; it does not supervise a long-running FFmpeg process, restart it after a crash, confirm YouTube ingest health, or stop it at the intended duration. If you need restart policy, dependency ordering, controlled shutdown, or continuous supervision, consider an appropriate service manager or wrapper. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer example that can attempt recovery after a temporary network failure, but that example alone is not a complete system-level supervisor.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the scheduled path and monitor YouTube
Run the command manually first, then test through the same cron entry and Linux account you plan to use. A cron-specific test catches differences in permissions, environment, paths, network access, and logging. In Live Control Room, verify that the preview appears and review stream-health messages; check both audio and moving video similar to the real stream. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring audio/video quality in its encoder settings guidance.

A successful cron launch, running FFmpeg process, or zero exit code does not prove the stream is healthy or publicly available. Confirm the feed in Live Control Room and check the resulting stream’s intended privacy and scheduling state.
Troubleshoot common cron and FFmpeg failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Works in a terminal, fails from cron | Different environment, working directory, or permissions | Use absolute paths, run under the crontab owner, set required environment explicitly, and inspect the captured log. |
| FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube | Wrong or stale URL/key, missing RTMPS support, or network/firewall issue | Copy the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, check the FFmpeg build and network access, and inspect connection errors without printing the key. |
| SSL error with RTMPS | Endpoint, build, or network configuration problem | Confirm the exact RTMPS endpoint and protocol support. YouTube’s troubleshooting notes port 443 as a possible setting for persistent SSL errors. |
| YouTube preview has no picture or sound, or reports poor health | Input, codec, bitrate, keyframe timing, or upload capacity does not suit the stream | Check FFmpeg’s input and output logs, compare output settings with YouTube’s current guidance, and test the actual audio/video and connection. |
| The stream stops and does not restart | Cron launched FFmpeg but is not supervising it | Use a service manager or wrapper with an appropriate restart policy if recovery is required; cron alone will not restart a failed process. |
| More than one FFmpeg instance starts | A previous scheduled process is still running | Add a lock or wrapper and confirm the earlier run’s lifecycle before the next scheduled launch. |
If a key may have leaked, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the protected configuration. Do not paste it into a support request, screenshot, or public log.
