Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

If the account window offers the checkbox “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer,” clear it, apply the change, and enter the selected account’s credentials when prompted. Restart the PC and check whether Windows signs in to the chosen account without waiting for credentials.
The checkbox is not available on every Windows configuration. Microsoft documents the Windows sign-in options and the underlying automatic-logon facility, but its current consumer support pages do not give a universal netplwiz walkthrough. Microsoft’s sign-in options guidance notes that available settings can vary by device.
If the checkbox is missing
Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and look for “For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device.” Microsoft says this setting disables password sign-in for Microsoft accounts on that device. It may be relevant when the netplwiz checkbox is absent, but switching it off is not guaranteed to restore the checkbox on every PC. Other device differences or organization policies may also affect what you see.

Automatic sign-in is not password removal
Netplwiz configures Windows to sign in to a selected account automatically at startup. The account and its password remain in place; this setting changes when credentials are requested, not whether the account has a password.
A passwordless Microsoft account is different: the account password is removed and an alternative sign-in method is required. Microsoft lists Windows Hello, Microsoft Authenticator, and physical security keys among the options, and notes that some older apps and features still require a password. See Microsoft’s guide to going passwordless.
Alternatives that keep a sign-in check
If the goal is to avoid typing a password while keeping an authentication step, Windows Hello may suit you better than automatic sign-in. It supports face recognition, fingerprint recognition, or a device PIN. A PIN is associated with that device and is not the same as the Microsoft account password; biometric sign-in requires compatible hardware. Microsoft explains setup in Configure Windows Hello.

Keeping a sign-in check is especially worth considering when someone else may have physical access to the PC, or when the computer is managed by an organization. Available Hello methods depend on your device and configuration.

Automatic sign-in reduces the barrier to reaching the configured Windows session for anyone with physical access to the PC. Microsoft Sysinternals warns that its Autologon utility encrypts the password in the registry as an LSA secret, but that an administrator can retrieve and decrypt it. Mark Russinovich’s Microsoft Sysinternals Autologon documentation states: “Although the password is encrypted in the registry as an LSA secret, a user with administrative rights can easily retrieve and decrypt it.” Encryption there should not be treated as protection from a local administrator.
Windows sign-in is an identity check; when a device is locked, you need a password, PIN, or Windows Hello biometric authentication to regain access. See Microsoft’s overview of account access in Windows.

Turn automatic sign-in off
If you used netplwiz
Open netplwiz again and, if the option is available, restore the checkbox requiring a user name and password. Apply the change and follow any credential prompt.
If you used Microsoft Sysinternals Autologon
Run the Autologon utility and select Disable. Microsoft also documents holding Shift before automatic logon to bypass it for that logon. These directions apply to the Autologon utility; the available controls can differ when automatic sign-in was configured another way.
Do not confuse this with Automatic Restart Sign-On
Windows Automatic Restart Sign-On (ARSO) is a separate behavior associated with restarting after Windows Update. It is not the netplwiz setting for routine startup sign-in. Microsoft describes ARSO in its Windows documentation.
