Use n8n to read each Airtable record, send its website URL to a screenshot API, and map another Airtable field into the filename used by your storage step. The key is to pass the screenshot response as binary data and configure the destination to save that binary under the mapped name. The exact field expression and binary property depend on the Airtable output, screenshot service, storage node, and n8n version, so inspect one record and one response before processing a full table.
How the workflow fits together
- Get records from Airtable. Use an Airtable trigger for new or changed records, or an Airtable retrieval operation when you want to process existing rows.
- Map the record values. Identify the website URL and the field you want to use as the screenshot filename.
- Capture the page. Use n8n’s HTTP Request node to call a screenshot service API, or a provider integration if it meets your requirements.
- Save the response. Pass the response as binary data to a destination that lets you set an object or file name, such as a suitable cloud-storage node.
n8n expressions can map values from earlier nodes and can reference nodes by name. Its integration directory includes screenshot-service examples such as GetScreenshot, ScreenshotOne, and Browserless, as well as Airtable integrations. Those examples do not mean the services share an endpoint, authentication scheme, response format, or settings; use the selected provider’s current API documentation for those details.

Prepare Airtable and n8n
Choose the fields
Make sure the Airtable table has a field containing a complete page URL, for example https://example.com/, and a separate field with a readable name such as Project Name. If the filename must be unique, include a record identifier, date, or other unique value in the naming scheme. A name by itself may collide when multiple records have the same value.

Use an Airtable Personal Access Token (PAT) or OAuth2 credential in n8n. n8n’s Airtable credential guidance says API key authentication was fully deprecated in February 2024, so do not build a new workflow around an Airtable API key. Grant the credential only the access needed for the base and operations the workflow uses.

Account for record pagination
Airtable’s Web API listing guide, last updated August 10, 2026, describes responses of up to 100 records at a time. If you expect more records, check whether your chosen n8n Airtable operation fetches every page or whether you need to enable pagination or loop through pages. Test with a table larger than one response page if complete coverage matters.
Build and test the workflow
1. Retrieve or trigger records
Add the Airtable trigger or retrieval node, select the base and table, and configure the event or retrieval operation. Execute it with one record first. Inspect the output panel to find the actual paths for the URL and naming fields. Depending on the operation, Airtable values may appear under a fields object or in another shape; do not assume a field path without checking the node output.
2. Create a safe filename
Map the naming field into the destination’s filename parameter, and add an extension matching the screenshot format. If the node supports expressions, an example for output shaped like {"fields":{"Project Name":"Product page"}} is {{$json.fields["Project Name"]}}.webp. Treat this as an illustration, not a universal expression: adapt it to the inspected output and the node receiving the value. If you use a later node or transform the item, the data path may differ.
Before saving, normalize filenames: remove or replace path separators and characters the destination disallows, trim whitespace, and guard against empty names. Add a unique suffix or define an overwrite policy to handle duplicates. Airtable field contents are input data, not trusted paths; do not let a field value choose an arbitrary directory or storage location.

3. Request the screenshot
Add an HTTP Request node and configure the chosen provider’s documented endpoint, authentication, URL parameter, capture options, and output mode. If the provider returns image bytes, configure n8n to receive the response as a file/binary result rather than treating it as ordinary JSON. Check the provider’s documentation for whether the returned file is a direct response or whether the API first returns a URL that needs a separate download request.
For each record, map the URL field into the provider’s URL parameter using the expression path confirmed in step 1. Encode or pass query parameters using the HTTP Request node’s parameter controls rather than manually concatenating an unescaped URL. Configure output format, full-page behavior, viewport, and other capture options at the provider; these vary by service.
4. Save the binary with the mapped name
Connect the screenshot response to a storage node that supports binary input and an explicit file or object name. Select the binary property produced by the HTTP Request node, then map the sanitized Airtable-derived filename into the destination’s filename field. Confirm that the destination stores a user-facing screenshot where you need it; n8n’s internal execution binary storage is a separate concern from a persistent screenshot library.
Local filesystem writes depend on the n8n deployment and its permissions. Do not assume an n8n Cloud workflow can write to an arbitrary local path. n8n documents S3 as an external-storage option for execution binary data on eligible self-hosted Enterprise deployments; that is not automatically the same as saving screenshots as user-facing objects. For execution binary storage in S3, n8n recommends configuring an S3 lifecycle policy for cleanup.

5. Run a small end-to-end test
- Test one Airtable record with a URL you are authorized to capture.
- Inspect the HTTP Request output to confirm it contains image bytes or a usable image URL, not an error page or JSON error body.
- Inspect the destination to confirm the binary arrived, the extension matches the actual format, and the filename is correct.
- Test an empty naming field, a duplicate name, and a filename containing punctuation or a slash before enabling a larger run.
- Only then enable the trigger or process the rest of the table.
Choose a screenshot API and destination deliberately
Use a provider’s current documentation to compare endpoint and authentication requirements, supported image formats and page modes, whether the result is bytes or a URL, usage limits and price, and how easily credentials and binary responses fit your n8n workflow. The n8n integration directory’s provider examples are evidence of available integration approaches, not proof that one provider is interchangeable with another.
For the destination, compare control over names, persistent access, deployment compatibility, permissions, retention, and whether you need a user-facing file or only n8n’s internal execution data. These decisions determine whether the workflow actually produces a retrievable screenshot with the intended name.

Troubleshooting
The filename expression is blank or wrong
Inspect the Airtable node output and copy the actual field path. Confirm that any intermediate node preserves the field and that the expression is evaluated against the item reaching the storage node. If a field can be empty, set a fallback name rather than creating a file with only an extension.
The saved file is JSON, empty, or unreadable
Check the HTTP Request response mode and provider response. A provider may return JSON containing a URL or an error rather than image bytes. If it returns a URL, add a request to download that URL as a file before the storage step. Verify the requested format against the saved extension.
The screenshot request fails
Check the provider’s current endpoint, required authentication, parameter names, URL encoding, and account usage limits. A page may also fail to load or be blocked by a bot check; inspect the provider’s response and verdict fields where available instead of saving an error response as an image.
Some Airtable records are missing
Check whether the table exceeds 100 records and whether the selected retrieval operation handles pagination. Also verify trigger filters and the operation’s record-selection settings.

The workflow cannot write to the requested location
Check whether the destination supports the deployment type you are using, whether its credentials have write access, and whether the path or bucket is permitted. For local writes, filesystem permissions and hosting restrictions apply; choose a compatible cloud destination if arbitrary local access is unavailable.
Files overwrite one another
Use a collision-resistant name, such as a sanitized Airtable label plus a stable record identifier, or configure the destination’s documented behavior for duplicates. Do not rely on a display name being unique.

Reliability and cost considerations
Large tables can mean many capture requests, so check provider rate limits, usage limits, and billing before enabling a bulk run. Consider a controlled batch size and failure handling so one unavailable page does not prevent unrelated records from being processed. Decide whether failed captures should be retried, marked in Airtable, or routed to an error branch; avoid retrying indefinitely on permanent authentication or configuration errors.
For reliability, record enough status in Airtable or workflow output to reconcile each source record with its saved file. A screenshot API may return a failed-load result, a URL, or image bytes depending on provider and outcome; validate the response before saving it. No single expression or storage configuration is universal across n8n versions and providers, so keep a one-record test in the workflow’s maintenance checklist when changing nodes or API settings.
