You can open Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on a Chromebook using either Microsoft 365 with OneDrive or Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides with Google Drive. Open the file in the Files app and choose the app you want; the two routes use different storage services and account requirements.
Choose how you want to open and edit the file
The Microsoft 365 route keeps the work in Microsoft’s editing app and OneDrive. The Google route opens the file in the matching Google app and uses Google Drive. Choose based on where you store files, which app you need, and what account or organization setup is available to you.

| What to compare | Microsoft 365 + OneDrive | Google apps + Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Editing app | Microsoft 365 | Docs for Word files; Sheets for Excel files; Slides for PowerPoint files |
| File storage | OneDrive | Google Drive |
| Requirement in Google’s instructions | Connect Files to OneDrive; OneDrive is required to open and edit files in Microsoft 365. | Google Workspace is required to open and edit files in Docs, Sheets, or Slides. |
| Offline use | The documented workflow does not open Office files in Microsoft 365 while the Chromebook is offline. | The documented workflow does not open Office files in Docs, Sheets, or Slides while the Chromebook is offline. |
Neither route should be assumed to preserve every advanced Office feature or formatting detail identically. If a document’s layout or specialized features are important, check the file after opening it in your chosen app.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOpen a file with Microsoft 365 and OneDrive
- Open the Launcher, then open the Files app.
- Open the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file. When prompted to choose an app, select Microsoft 365.
- Follow the setup prompts to connect Files with Microsoft OneDrive. OneDrive is required for editing through Microsoft 365 in this workflow.
- If the file is stored locally, follow the prompt to move it to OneDrive. It then opens in Microsoft 365, and changes are saved in the Microsoft OneDrive folder in Files.
You can also open files directly from the Microsoft 365 app. If a file you expected to find is not in the OneDrive folder, check where it is stored in Files.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Open a file with Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides
- In the Files app, open the Office file and choose the corresponding Google app: Docs for a Word file, Sheets for an Excel file, or Slides for a PowerPoint file.
- If the file is not already in Google Drive, follow the prompt to move it there. The file then appears in the Google Drive folder in Files.
- Use a Google Workspace account to open and edit files in these Google apps, as required by Google’s instructions.
To switch apps later, right-click the file in Files, choose Open with…, and select a different app.
What to expect when you are offline
Google’s documented Microsoft 365 and Google-app workflows require an internet connection to open Office files. Google says a basic editor may be available offline, but its functionality is limited. Do not count on full Microsoft 365 or Google-app editing of these files without a connection.

Why PowerPoint files may behave differently in Files
ChromeOS’s general file-type guidance lists .doc, .docx, .xls, and .xlsx among supported file types, but describes .ppt and .pptx as read-only in that basic file-handling context. That note concerns the file handler; it does not rule out editing a PowerPoint file in a selected app. Google separately documents opening and editing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files through Microsoft 365.

Organizations have a separate Office for the web integration. Google documents it for ChromeOS 133 or later on devices enrolled with ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade or Education Upgrade, and says each user needs a Microsoft 365 or Workspace subscription. These are managed-device requirements, not the default consumer setup. If the integration is missing on a school or work Chromebook, ask the administrator whether the device, subscription, and organization policies support it.

Moving or backing up files with external storage
A USB thumb drive or external hard drive can help transfer or back up files. Google’s Chromebook switching guidance describes copying files from removable storage into My files on the Chromebook. External storage does not provide Office editing: you still need to open the file in Microsoft 365 or a Google app, and follow that workflow’s storage requirements. Check your Chromebook’s ports and drive compatibility before choosing a storage device.
