Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn Microsoft Edge, group related tabs by right-clicking a tab, selecting Add tab to a group, and creating or choosing a group. You can name it, assign a color, collapse it to reclaim tab-strip space, and use the same feature with horizontal or vertical tabs. For project-level separation, use an Edge Workspace instead.
Create and manage a tab group manually
- Open the tabs you want to keep together.
- Right-click one tab and choose Add tab to a group.
- Select New group or choose an existing group.
- Enter a descriptive name and choose a color.
To include several tabs at once, select the relevant tabs first, then use the tab context menu to add them to a group. To rename a group later, right-click its group name and choose Edit (the exact wording can vary slightly by Edge release).
Collapse a group
Select the group name in the tab strip to collapse its tabs. The group remains available, while the individual tabs no longer occupy the full strip.
Use groups with vertical tabs
Tab groups work in both the standard horizontal tab strip and Edge’s vertical-tabs layout. Switching layouts does not change the groups themselves.

What happens when you close Edge
Microsoft says tab groups are pinned by default. Closing Edge therefore leaves the grouped tabs waiting for you when the browser is reopened. You can still manage the group from its tab-strip menu.
Automatically organize open tabs
When many tabs are open, open the Search tabs control or the tab-actions menu and choose Organize tabs. Edge analyzes the open tabs, creates relevance-based groups, and assigns names and colors.

Microsoft’s Edge blog also describes asking Copilot to group similar tabs. Automatic organization is a suggestion system, not a guarantee that every tab will be classified correctly; Microsoft has not published an accuracy rate. Review the proposed groups and move, rename, or delete tabs as needed.
Tab groups vs. Workspaces
These features operate at different levels. A tab group organizes a related cluster inside the current browser context. A Workspace is a saved project-level browser window that can contain tab groups.

| Capability | Tab group | Workspace |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Related tabs in the current Edge window | A project or activity window that can contain multiple tab groups |
| How you start | Right-click a tab and choose Add tab to a group | Create one from Manage workspaces or the Workspaces menu; Edge can also move your current tabs into a new Workspace |
| Persistence | Groups are pinned by default when Edge closes | Workspaces are automatically saved and kept up to date when you are signed in |
| Visual identity | Name and color | Name, theme, and an emoji; tabs inside can also use groups |
| Best use | Keep one task’s related sites together | Reopen an entire project as a separate saved browser environment |
When a tab group is the better choice
Use a group for a focused cluster such as several sources for one article, a set of shopping comparisons, or the pages needed for one appointment. It is quick to create and stays inside the current window.
When to use a Workspace
Use a Workspace when the whole activity should have its own browser window—for example, trip planning, research, or a school assignment. A Workspace can hold several groups without mixing that project with unrelated daily tabs.

Current Workspace requirements
Microsoft’s current support information lists these requirements: a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC or a Mac desktop, Microsoft Edge version 144 or later, and sign-in with a Microsoft account or a Microsoft Entra ID account. This requirement is specific to Workspaces and should not be confused with the separate tab-organization service policy, which documents Windows and macOS support from Edge 113.

Edge’s TabServicesEnabled policy controls the tab-organization service used by tab-group creation and related Group Similar Tabs features. When the service is enabled—or left unconfigured—Microsoft’s documentation says the service can receive tab data including URLs, page titles, and existing group information, then return grouping and naming suggestions.

The policy documentation lists Windows and macOS support from Edge 113 and says Android and iOS are not supported for this service. That is a service-policy statement, not the current minimum version for Workspaces.
When the Tab Organization service is turned off, Microsoft’s privacy documentation says new groups receive a generic name such as Group 1 rather than a generated descriptive name. The same documentation describes Workspaces as saved, shareable browsing windows whose data is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint. In a managed organization, an administrator may control these services through policy.
Quick Recap
A practical setup for a crowded browser
- Put tabs for each active task into a named, color-coded group.
- Collapse groups you are not using immediately.
- Run Organize tabs when the open-tab list is too large to sort manually, then check every suggested grouping.
- Move an entire project into a Workspace when it needs a separate saved window or several groups.
What Edge does not promise
- Automatic grouping is relevance-based; Microsoft does not publish a success or accuracy percentage.
- There is no published figure in Microsoft’s cited material for adoption, time saved, or performance improvement.
- Mobile iOS and Android are not supported by the documented tab-organization service, even though the browser’s desktop tab-group and Workspace features have separate availability rules.
