pad in Windows 11 is a simple place to write Markdown because Markdown is plain text at its core. You can type headings, lists, links, code blocks, and other Markdown syntax directly into a Notepad file without installing anything extra.
What pad does not do natively is render that syntax as a formatted preview. It can help you create and save Markdown files, but you will need another app, browser-based tool, or dedicated Markdown editor when you want to preview, export, or convert the finished document.
What Markdown support in Notepad actually means
In Windows 11, pad can be used to write Markdown because Markdown is plain text. A Markdown file is simply a text file that uses characters such as #, *, –, >, and backticks to describe structure and formatting. Since Notepad is a plain-text editor, it can open, edit, and save Markdown content without changing it into a proprietary document format.
What pad does not do natively is render Markdown as formatted output while you type. If you write ## Shopping list, Notepad will show the two hash symbols and the words exactly as typed; it will not display a larger heading. If you type **bold text**, Notepad will not make the words bold on screen. The formatting only becomes visible after the Markdown is opened in a Markdown viewer, documentation site, publishing tool, browser-based converter, or another app that understands Markdown syntax.

This makes pad useful for drafting Markdown, quick edits, documentation notes, README files, blog drafts, checklists, and configuration-style text. It is lightweight, opens quickly, and stores the content as clean text. It is also a safe option when you want to avoid hidden formatting that can be introduced by word processors such as Microsoft Word. For example, Notepad will not automatically replace straight quotes, add page layout metadata, or embed fonts into the file.
There are still some limits to keep in mind. pad does not provide a built-in Markdown preview pane, toolbar buttons for Markdown formatting, automatic table alignment, export to HTML or PDF, or built-in validation for broken links and malformed syntax. Recent versions of Notepad include helpful general text-editing features such as tabs, find and replace, autosave behavior, and basic text zoom, but those features are not Markdown-specific. In practice, Notepad is the place where you write the Markdown source; another tool is where you preview, publish, or convert it.
Creating and saving a Markdown file in Notepad
Creating a Markdown file in pad is the same as creating any plain-text file, with one extra detail: the file should be saved with a .md extension instead of the default .txt extension. Open Notepad from the Start menu, Windows Search, or by right-clicking a folder and choosing a text-file option if available. Once Notepad is open, you can begin typing Markdown syntax directly, such as headings that start with #, bullet lists that start with –, or links written with square brackets and parentheses.
To save the file correctly, select File > Save as. In the save dialog, choose the folder where you want to keep the document, then type a filename that ends in .md, such as meeting-s.md, readme.md, or project-plan.md. If Notepad tries to save the document as a text file, set Save as type to All files (*.*) before clicking Save. This prevents Windows from silently creating a file named something like meeting-notes.md.txt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you are not sure whether the file was saved with the correct extension, check it in File Explorer. On Windows 11, open the folder containing the file, select View > Show > File name extensions. With extensions visible, you should see the full filename, including .md. If the file ends in .txt, right-click it, choose Rename, and change the ending to .md. Windows may warn that changing a file extension could make the file unusable; for a plain-text Markdown document, confirming the change is normally fine.
For new files, it helps to keep filenames simple and predictable. Use lowercase words separated by hyphens, such as daily-s.md or setup-checklist.md, especially if the file might later be used with GitHub, documentation tools, static site generators, or command-line utilities. Markdown files are plain text, so they are easy to store in OneDrive, attach to email, sync with Git, or open in another editor without conversion.
Suggested save settings
- Extension: Use .md for standard Markdown files.
- Save as type: Choose All files (*.*) when naming the file manually.
- Encoding: Use UTF-8 when available, especially if your notes include symbols, accents, emoji, or non-English text.
- Location: Save the file in a project folder, notes folder, or synced location where you can easily find it later.
After the file is saved, you can reopen it by double-clicking it if pad is associated with .md files, or by right-clicking the file and choosing Open with > Notepad. If another app opens Markdown files by default, you can still edit the file in Notepad whenever you need a fast, lightweight plain-text editor.
Common Markdown formatting syntax to use
Markdown is plain text with lightweight symbols that describe structure and formatting. In pad, you type these characters directly; Notepad will not turn them into bold text, headings, or clickable links while you write. The formatting appears when the file is opened in a Markdown viewer, documentation site, note app, converter, or editor with preview support. This makes Notepad useful for drafting Markdown because the file stays simple, portable, and easy to edit.

Headings are created with one or more hash symbols at the start of a line. Use one # for the main title, ## for a major section, and ### for a subsection. Put a space between the hash symbols and the heading text. For emphasis, wrap text in asterisks or underscores: *italic* or _italic_ for italic text, and **bold** or __bold__ for bold text. You can also combine them as ***bold italic***.

| Italic text | *draft* |
| Bulleted list | – First item |
| Numbered list | 1. First step |

| Inline code | `notepad.exe` |
Lists are especially useful for s, tasks, and outlines. Start each bulleted list item with a hyphen, plus sign, or asterisk, followed by a space. For numbered lists, type a number, a period, and a space. Many Markdown tools automatically handle the final numbering when rendered, so a list typed as 1., 1., 1. may still appear as 1, 2, 3 in the preview. Task lists are also common in GitHub-style Markdown: type – [ ] for an incomplete task and – [x] for a completed one, although support depends on the app used to view the file.
Links and images use square brackets and parentheses. A standard link looks like link text. An image is similar but starts with an exclamation mark: . For quoted text, begin the line with a greater-than sign, such as > This is a quote. For code, use backticks. Single backticks mark inline code, while three backticks above and below a block create a fenced code block. If you are writing technical s in Notepad, code fences are usually clearer than trying to indent code manually.
Markdown also supports horizontal rules and tables in many viewers. A horizontal rule can be written as — on its own line. Tables use pipes and hyphens, such as | Name | Status | followed by | — | — |. Table support is common but not universal across every Markdown processor, so keep tables simple if the file will be shared between different tools.

Once you are comfortable typing basic Markdown in pad, the next step is using it consistently to structure your notes. Notepad will not visually collapse sections, build a table of contents, or render links as clickable Markdown elements inside the editor, but it is still a useful plain-text workspace. The structure comes from the characters you type: hash symbols for headings, hyphens or numbers for lists, brackets for links, and backticks for code.
Headings are the simplest way to divide a longer into readable sections. Use one # for the main title, two ## for major sections, and three ### for smaller subsections. In Notepad, these remain plain text, but Markdown previewers and converters use them to create properly nested HTML headings. Keeping heading levels in order makes the file easier to scan and helps other apps interpret the document correctly.

# Website redesignfollowed by## Tasks,## Meeting notes, and## Decisions. - Study note:
# Biology chapter 4followed by## Vocabulary,## Diagrams to review, and## Questions. - Personal note:
# Trip planfollowed by## Flights,## Hotel, and## Packing list.
Lists are useful for tasks, outlines, and grouped details. For unordered lists, start each line with a hyphen, asterisk, or plus sign, such as - Buy monitor. For ordered lists, use numbers followed by periods, such as 1. Install app and 2. Sign in. Markdown processors usually handle the numbering automatically when rendered, but in pad you will see exactly what you typed. To create a nested list, indent the child item with spaces before the marker. This keeps related details under the correct parent item.
Links let you keep references inside the without pasting long URLs into the middle of a sentence. The common format is [link text](https://example.com). For example, [Microsoft support](https://support.microsoft.com) will appear as a regular Markdown link when opened in a preview tool. In Notepad, it remains editable text, though Windows may still recognize a pasted URL separately depending on the app behavior and file context. For notes with many references, consider placing the most important links under a dedicated heading such as ## References.

They preserve commands, configuration snippets, error messages, templates, and text that must not be reformatted. For short inline code, wrap a word or phrase in single backticks, such as `ipconfig`. For a larger block, place three backticks on the line before and after the content. You can also add a language label after the opening backticks, such as ```powershell, which some preview tools use for syntax highlighting.
A practical Markdown in Notepad might use all of these elements together: a top-level heading for the topic, second-level headings for sections, task lists for action items, links for sources, and fenced code blocks for commands or copied output. Since Notepad does not render the result, spacing and consistency matter. Leave blank lines between headings, paragraphs, lists, and code blocks so other Markdown tools can parse the file cleanly when you preview or convert it later.

Previewing Markdown outside Notepad
pad is useful for writing plain Markdown, but it does not render the file into a formatted preview. If you type # Project Plan, Notepad shows the hash symbol and text exactly as written rather than turning it into a large heading. To see how your Markdown will look when published or shared, open the .md file in a tool that can render Markdown.
The simplest option in Windows 11 is often a web browser-based preview. Many online Markdown viewers let you paste your Markdown text into one pane and see the formatted result in another. This works well for quick checks, but avoid pasting private s, passwords, internal documentation, or confidential work into a website you do not control. For sensitive files, use a local app or an offline workflow instead.
Preview with Visual Studio Code
Visual Studio Code is a common choice because it is free, works well on Windows 11, and includes Markdown preview features without requiring a complex setup. After installing it, open your .md file, then use the built-in preview command to view the rendered version beside the source text. This makes it easy to keep editing in Markdown while checking headings, lists, links, tables, and code blocks visually.
- Install Visual Studio Code from the official Microsoft or VS Code website.
- Open your Markdown file by choosing File > Open File.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+V to open a Markdown preview.
- Press Ctrl+K, then V, to open the preview side by side.
VS Code is also helpful when you need to manage several Markdown files in a folder, such as documentation pages, meeting s, or a small knowledge base. It can highlight Markdown syntax, show mistakes more clearly than Notepad, and support extensions for exporting or linting Markdown if your workflow grows.
Preview with Windows-friendly Markdown apps
If you prefer a writing-focused experience, a dedicated Markdown editor can provide a cleaner preview than a code editor. Apps such as Typora, MarkText, Obsidian, and Zettlr can open .md files and show formatted content as you work. Some use a split view with source text on one side and preview on the other, while others hide the Markdown characters after they are interpreted.
| Tool | Best use | Preview style |
|---|---|---|
| Visual Studio Code | Documentation, technical notes, project folders | Separate or side-by-side preview |
| Typora | Distraction-free writing and polished documents | Live rendered editing |
| Obsidian | Linked notes, personal knowledge bases, research | Reading view and live preview |
| MarkText | General Markdown writing with a simple interface | Live preview editor |
Convert Markdown to HTML, PDF, or Word
Sometimes previewing is not enough because you need to send the file in another format. In that case, convert the Markdown file to HTML, PDF, or DOCX. Visual Studio Code extensions, dedicated Markdown editors, and command-line tools such as Pandoc can handle these conversions. For example, HTML is useful for web publishing, PDF is better for sharing a fixed-layout document, and DOCX is convenient when someone needs to review or edit the content in Microsoft Word.

pad is a good choice when you want a fast, distraction-free place to write plain Markdown text on Windows 11. It opens quickly, saves clean .md files, and does not add hidden formatting. However, it remains a plain-text editor. If your Markdown work depends on live preview, document structure, export options, or project organization, a dedicated Markdown editor will usually save time and reduce mistakes.
Consider switching to a Markdown editor when you need to see the rendered result while you write. In pad, **bold**, # headings, tables, links, and fenced code blocks stay visible as raw syntax. That is useful for learning and editing, but it can be awkward for longer documents. Editors such as Typora, MarkText, Obsidian, Zettlr, iA Writer, or Visual Studio Code with Markdown extensions can show a live preview, split-screen preview, or rendered inline formatting so you can catch broken headings, malformed tables, and incorrect links earlier.

A dedicated tool is also better when Markdown is part of a larger workflow. For example, if you write documentation for GitHub, a static site, a knowledge base, or a software project, you may need features that pad does not provide: table of contents generation, front matter support, syntax highlighting for code blocks, link validation, image handling, word counts, spell checking, and export to HTML, PDF, or DOCX. These features are not part of Notepad’s native Markdown handling, so you would otherwise need extra tools to preview, convert, or check the file.

Situations where a Markdown editor is worth using
- You write long documents: navigation panes, collapsible headings, and search across files make large notes easier to manage.
- You use lots of tables: Markdown tables are difficult to align by hand in Notepad, while many editors can format them automatically.
- You include images: Markdown editors often help insert image paths, preview images, and manage local attachments.
- You publish the file: export tools and preview modes help confirm how the document will look before sharing it.
- You work with code: syntax highlighting and fenced code block previews make technical documentation easier to review.
- You maintain connected notes: apps such as Obsidian can handle backlinks, tags, folders, and graph views for personal knowledge bases.
Visual Studio Code is a strong option if you already work with code or Git repositories. It includes Markdown preview, side-by-side editing, extensions, spell checking, linting, and integrated source control. Obsidian is better suited to linked s and personal knowledge management. Typora and MarkText are useful when you prefer a cleaner writing interface with rendered Markdown as you type. For occasional Markdown files, though, Notepad plus a browser-based preview or converter may still be enough.
The practical approach is to start in pad when you only need to draft or edit a simple .md file. Move to a dedicated Markdown editor when previewing, exporting, organizing, or validating the document becomes part of the job. Markdown stays portable either way because the file is still plain text, so you can begin in Notepad and open the same file later in a more advanced editor without changing the format.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows 11 Notepad have a built-in Markdown preview?
No. pad can open, edit, and save Markdown files as plain text, but it does not render headings, bold text, links, tables, or code blocks as formatted output. To see the formatted version, open the file in a Markdown editor, Visual Studio Code, a browser-based preview tool, or another app that supports Markdown rendering.
What file extension should I use for Markdown files in Notepad?
Use the .md extension, such as s.md or readme.md. When saving from Notepad, choose All files in the file type menu so Windows does not add .txt to the end. If the file becomes notes.md.txt, rename it in File Explorer and remove the extra .txt.
Can I write Markdown tables and code blocks in Notepad?
Yes, because Markdown is plain text, you can type tables, fenced code blocks, inline code, and other Markdown syntax directly in pad. The main limitation is that Notepad will not align, validate, or preview that formatting for you. For complex tables or long technical documents, a dedicated Markdown editor is usually easier.
How can I preview a Markdown file written in Notepad?
The easiest option is to open the .md file in Visual Studio Code and use its Markdown preview feature. You can also paste the Markdown into an online Markdown previewer or use apps such as Obsidian, Typora, MarkText, or pad++ with a Markdown plugin. If the document is for GitHub, uploading or opening it as a README file will show the rendered version there.
When should I stop using Notepad and switch to a Markdown editor?
pad works well for quick notes, simple README files, and short Markdown drafts. Switch to a Markdown editor if you need live preview, automatic table formatting, export to PDF or HTML, document navigation, spell check, or support for large writing projects. A dedicated editor reduces mistakes because you can immediately see how the Markdown will look when rendered.
Bottom Line
pad in Windows 11 is a simple, fast place to write Markdown because Markdown is just plain text. You can type headings, lists, links, images, code blocks, and other syntax directly, but Notepad will not render a live preview or export formatted HTML/PDF on its own.
