Halide 3.2’s adjustable-aperture controls are for iPhone 18 Pro. Choose Aperture Priority to set the aperture while Halide adjusts shutter speed and ISO, or choose Manual to set all three yourself. Other iPhones do not gain a physical variable aperture simply by using the app.
Which iPhone supports Halide aperture control?
Halide’s App Store release note for version 3.2 says it adds support for the adjustable aperture on iPhone 18 Pro. That is the compatibility claim established here; it should not be generalized to other iPhone models. On cameras without a physical variable aperture, an app cannot add one. Older Halide guidance that described all iPhone apertures as fixed predates this hardware and software release.

How do Aperture Priority and Manual differ?
| Mode | Who sets aperture? | Who sets shutter speed? | Who sets ISO? | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aperture Priority | You | Halide | Halide | You want to choose depth of field and let the app balance exposure. |
| Manual | You | You | You | You need to control aperture, motion rendering, and sensitivity together. |
Halide 3.2 added Aperture Priority; the mode descriptions above reflect reporting dated October 1, 2026. The app’s current controls may differ by release, so use the in-app mode and exposure controls rather than relying on instructions for an older version.

How do I change aperture in Halide?
Open Halide on an iPhone 18 Pro and select Aperture Priority if you want the app to manage shutter speed and ISO, or Manual if you want to manage all three exposure settings. Then use the current in-app aperture control to choose the opening that suits the image. A verified, version-specific gesture or exact control path for the aperture dial is not established here; older instructions about tapping a triangle concern earlier manual-exposure controls, not a confirmed Halide 3.2 aperture gesture.
Changing aperture affects both how much light reaches the sensor and how much of the scene appears in focus. A wider opening admits more light and tends to produce shallower depth of field; a smaller opening admits less light and tends to keep more of the scene in focus. The physical aperture is part of the compatible iPhone camera system, not a software effect added to other iPhones.
How should I choose aperture, shutter speed, and ISO?
Choose aperture for depth of field and light
Start with the look you want: a shallow depth of field can help separate a subject from its background, while a deeper field can keep more of a scene sharp. The aperture choice also changes exposure, so the camera must compensate with shutter speed, ISO, or both. Aperture Priority is useful when the depth-of-field decision matters most and you are comfortable letting Halide make that balance.

Choose shutter speed for motion
A faster shutter exposes for less time and can reduce motion blur; a slower shutter gathers light for longer but makes subject movement and camera shake more visible. Halide Support’s 2026 lesson uses 1/1000 second or faster as an example for freezing motion, 1/30 second or slower as an example where motion blur appears, and cautions that handheld shake may show below about 1/60 second. These are instructional examples, not guarantees: the right speed depends on the subject, movement, and how steadily the phone is held.
Choose ISO for low-light flexibility
ISO affects image sensitivity and the noise trade-off. Halide Support’s 2026 tutorial describes ISO 100–400 as a clean, minimal-grain example range and ISO 1600 or higher as a low-light option that brings more grain and can reduce color accuracy. Treat those as guidance, not hard limits for every scene. Raising ISO can help preserve a faster shutter in dim conditions, but the image may look noisier.
Halide explains shutter speed and ISO in its manual exposure lesson. Its examples are useful starting points, not controlled comparisons across devices or subjects.

How to meter and check the result
Do not judge exposure only by how bright the viewfinder looks. Halide says the preview may not match the final processed photo and describes a separate exposure meter in the upper-left when using manual exposure. Watch the meter as you adjust settings, take a test image, and inspect the captured result—especially when using a slower shutter or high ISO.
