To use keyboard mapping in MEmu, open a game, click Keyboard on the emulator’s sidebar, place the control modules over the game’s matching touch buttons, assign keys, and save. Test the layout in play; controls and Smart Key defaults can vary by game and MEmu version.
Set up a keyboard mapping
- Open the game in MEmu and wait until its controls are visible.
- Click Keyboard on the MEmu sidebar to open the mapping panel.
- Drag the appropriate control modules onto the corresponding touch controls on the game screen. For example, place a movement joystick over the movement pad and a fire control over the on-screen fire button.
- Assign keys. Select a key label in the mapping and press the key you want to use. Repeat for each control.
- Save and test. Return to the game and confirm that each key activates the intended action. If the game’s HUD has moved or changed, adjust the mapping positions to match it.
MEmu’s key-mapping setup guide documents dragging controls to the game’s on-screen buttons and importing or exporting configurations. It does not specify a universal layout for all games.

Choose the mapping module for the action
MEmu’s module tutorial, published in 2021, describes these control types. Their detailed behavior and interface labels may differ in newer versions.

MEmu also documents specialized modules such as Zoom, Expand Sight, Gravity Sensor, 3D View, and Fake GPS. Use these only if they suit the game and its controls; they are not necessary for ordinary keyboard mapping.

Save a layout and restore it later
Use the mapping menu’s import and export options to save a working configuration or bring one back. Export a known-good layout before making substantial changes. MEmu’s setup article does not establish that a configuration file will work across different games, emulator versions, or computers, so verify an imported layout in the target game.
Smart Keys and version differences
Smart Keys are context-sensitive mappings, so a key may behave differently depending on what is on screen. MEmu’s Smart Key article describes, for example, a context-action key and controls that release the pointer for menus. The article lists Call of Duty, PUBG, PUBG Lite, Free Fire, Life After, and Brawl Stars, but it was published in December 2020; treat that as a historical list, not confirmation of compatibility today. Check the mapping panel for the game and MEmu version installed on your PC.

MEmu 9.5.5 release notes dated July 3, 2026, say the update improved key-binding preloading for users with non-English keyboard layouts. That is a version-specific improvement, not a guarantee that every keyboard-layout problem is resolved. See the MEmu 9.5.5 release notes.
Troubleshoot a mapping that stops working
Mouse capture or camera view feels stuck
Try toggling the capture key to hide or unhide the mouse. Ctrl may be the relevant key, but MEmu’s mapping troubleshooting guide says the key can differ by game and suggests trying ~ or F1. It also recommends Alt+Tab for occasional glitches.

A default button was changed
Open the mapping panel and use its restore icon to return the button to its default setting. The troubleshooting guide identifies the icon by its function rather than giving a text label.
Keys fail after a game update
MEmu says Smart Key mappings may need updating after a game update. Its 2021 troubleshooting article says an update usually arrives within one business day and that a notification appears when the game starts; this is dated guidance, not a current turnaround guarantee.

MEmu documents this recovery sequence: change any key on the left side of the screen, save once, then choose the reload option from the drop-down menu to recover data from the main mapping database.

If simpler recovery fails, MEmu’s troubleshooting article says to delete memu2.db and memudef.db from the main MEmu directory and restart so mapping data can be downloaded again. Treat this as a last resort: startup may be affected if MEmu’s server is unavailable. Follow current official support instructions before deleting files.

Can you use a gamepad instead?
Yes. A controller is optional; keyboard mapping does not require buying extra hardware. MEmu documents joystick setup separately: connect the gamepad to the PC, check in the device properties that its buttons respond, then open a game and map the controller buttons to the matching on-screen controls.
