With earlier Selenium 4 releases that support it (starting at 4.5.0), add the matching selenium-http-jdk-client dependency and set webdriver.http.factory=jdk-http-client before creating the Selenium client or driver. For Selenium Grid, make the extension available to the server and apply the setting to each relevant component.
What the JDK HTTP client changes
Selenium’s HTTP client is the transport Selenium uses to communicate with WebDriver servers, Grid components, and DevTools or BiDi sessions. It does not replace the WebDriver API that your test uses to control a browser. WebDriver still drives browsers locally or remotely; BiDi uses a WebSocket connection for browser events. Selenium’s explanation of the JDK client describes those communication paths, and its WebDriver documentation explains the browser automation layer.
Java’s java.net.http module provides HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, and WebSocket APIs, including HttpClient, HttpRequest, HttpResponse, and WebSocket. Selenium integrates this Java client as one transport implementation; choosing it does not change the test commands you write.
Check your Selenium version
- Selenium 4.14 and later: Selenium’s 2022 article says the JDK client is used by default. You generally do not need to add the optional client artifact just to select it.
- Selenium 4.5.0 through 4.13: The Java 11+ client is supported as an optional component. Add the matching artifact and select it with the system property below.
- Before Selenium 4.5.0: The cited Selenium guidance does not establish support for this integration. Upgrade to a release that supports it and check that release’s documentation.

Configure a Java project
1. Add matching Selenium artifacts when needed
For a release that requires explicit setup, use the same version for selenium-java and selenium-http-jdk-client. Replace ${selenium.version} with the Selenium version used by your project; do not let the two artifacts drift to different releases.

</dependencies>For Selenium 4.14 or later, follow your release’s dependency guidance rather than adding the optional artifact automatically. Selenium’s documented explicit setup and version-matching advice are in its Java 11 client article.
2. Set the transport before creating Selenium objects
Set the property at JVM startup so it is present before Selenium creates the relevant HTTP client. For example:

java -Dwebdriver.http.factory=jdk-http-client -jar tests.jarIn an IDE, add -Dwebdriver.http.factory=jdk-http-client to the test run configuration’s VM options. In a build tool, pass it to the forked test JVM using that tool’s JVM-argument configuration. The exact setting is a Java system property, not a browser capability or WebDriver command.
If setting it programmatically, do so before constructing the driver or any Selenium client that needs the transport:

WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();The example assumes ChromeDriver and its browser/driver prerequisites are already available. Use the driver class appropriate to your browser. If you set the property after Selenium has already created the relevant client, it may be too late for that client to use the selection.

Enable it in Selenium Grid
Grid requires server-side availability as well as client-side configuration: the JDK client extension must be on the Selenium Server classpath, and the factory property must be set on each component where the transport is needed. Selenium’s Grid getting-started guide documents the --ext pattern.
Standalone server
Use the Selenium Server version that matches the extension version, then launch the server with the extension and property. Replace the version and JAR paths with the files used by your deployment:

--ext selenium-http-jdk-client-YOUR_SELENIUM_VERSION.jarHub, Node, or distributed Grid
For a multi-process Grid, repeat the extension and property configuration on every relevant Hub, Node, or distributed component. Adding the JAR only to the test runner does not put it on the server classpath. Apply the flags in each component’s launch command or service configuration, then restart those processes so the settings take effect. Consult the Grid guide for the launch syntax appropriate to your topology.

Verify the configuration
- Confirm the Java runtime used to launch the test process is Java 11 or later, as required for the JDK HTTP client.
- Check that your Selenium artifacts are aligned to one version and that the optional JDK client artifact is present for releases where explicit installation is required.
- Confirm
webdriver.http.factoryis set in the JVM that creates the Selenium client or driver, not merely in a separate shell or process. - For Grid, confirm the extension is on the server classpath and the property is applied to each relevant component.
- Run a small session-creation and browser-command test. If the selected transport fails, inspect the startup logs and dependency/classpath before changing unrelated browser capabilities.
Compatibility, performance, and cancellation
The official sources establish the release behavior and setup method, but do not provide a comparative benchmark or a universal claim that the JDK client is faster than Selenium’s alternative transport. Assess compatibility in the environment that matters to you, especially across your Selenium release, Java runtime, Grid topology, and required HTTP or WebSocket behavior. Keep the artifacts aligned and test the same workflows your suite depends on.
Java 11’s HTTP client also supports asynchronous operations, but do not assume cancelling a returned future immediately interrupts an in-flight network request. Oracle’s Java SE 11 documentation cautions that calling cancel on a returned CompletableFuture may not interrupt the underlying operation, though it may complete dependent stages exceptionally. Oracle Java SE 11 java.net.http package documentation.
Troubleshooting
“Unable to create HttpClient factory” or a missing factory error
For a Selenium release that needs the optional component, the client artifact may be missing or absent from the runtime classpath. Add selenium-http-jdk-client at the same version as the other Selenium artifacts, then verify the test runner actually receives it.

The property appears to have no effect
Check the exact value webdriver.http.factory=jdk-http-client, and ensure it is a JVM system property set before the Selenium client is created. If you changed the value after starting a session, restart the test process and retry.
Grid client works locally but fails remotely
Local classpath configuration does not configure Grid servers. Put the extension on the Selenium Server classpath with --ext, set the property on the relevant server components, and restart each one. Check all Hub/Node or distributed processes rather than only the Hub.
Artifacts are present but linkage or runtime errors continue
Inspect the resolved dependency tree for mixed Selenium versions, duplicate Selenium JARs, or a server extension built for a different Selenium release. Align versions, remove stale copies, and consult the documentation for the installed release if its behavior differs from the 2022 setup article.
An asynchronous request does not stop immediately after cancel
This can be consistent with Java 11’s API behavior: cancellation of the returned CompletableFuture may not interrupt the underlying operation. Design timeout and cleanup handling around the behavior of the client operation rather than treating cancel() as guaranteed network interruption.
