For a stable Selenium screenshot test, do not wait for a real SMS by default. If you are testing how the OTP screen looks, give it controlled fixture data; if you need to test authentication, use an isolated test route or your provider’s documented test-number and fixed-code feature. Keep test credentials and bypasses out of production, and make the browser and rendering environment consistent.
Choose the test that matches what the screenshot must prove
An OTP prompt can be tested as a visual component or as part of a live authentication journey. Those are different goals and should not be coupled by default: a screenshot of the prompt does not need a live SMS or a successful sign-in.

Selenium’s documentation advises against automating two-factor authentication as a normal test dependency and suggests a special test token or disabling 2FA in a controlled test environment when the journey still needs coverage. Choose a mocked prompt for visual-only assertions; use a test authentication path when the backend behavior is part of the test.

There is no universal Selenium procedure for an “Indian mobile number OTP” prompt. The title does not identify the application, authentication provider, accepted number format, or where a code can be obtained. Do not assume that a number formatted as Indian is registered for testing or can receive a message.

For Firebase Authentication or Identity Platform
Firebase and Google Identity Platform document fictional or test phone-number setups that avoid sending actual SMS. Identity Platform requires registered test numbers in E.164 format and uses six-digit verification codes. Its documentation describes a limit of up to 10 development test numbers; Firebase also documents up to 10 fictional numbers for development. These are provider configuration limits, not a guarantee that any Indian-number format or example will work in every app. Configure a number and code accepted by the provider and application you actually use.
Do not copy a US example from provider documentation and treat it as an Indian test number. Confirm the provider’s accepted test configuration for your project. For a visual-only test, a fixture can simply display a fictional Indian-format string if the UI state is what you need to compare; that does not prove the number is assigned, reachable, or authenticated.

Protect test identities
Provider test users can be more than harmless placeholders. Identity Platform says a test-number sign-in creates a user with the behavior and properties of a real user, including a valid ID token; Firebase likewise documents that fictional-number users have the same ID-token signature as real phone users. Restrict their roles or custom claims, secure and rotate test numbers and codes, and ensure test-only settings cannot leak into production. Avoid obvious codes and store credentials securely.

- Fix the UI state. Seed the same fictional display number, prompt text, code-entry state, and error or success state for each screenshot. Use a fixture or mocked response when you are testing appearance rather than authentication.
- Keep auth setup separate. If the test must cover sign-in, use a provider-supported test number and code or an isolated test-only token route. Do not make the screenshot assertion wait for a real SMS unless delivery itself is under test.
- Wait for the target state. Wait for the OTP form or a stable element that identifies the state you intend to capture. Avoid relying only on a fixed sleep, which can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one.
- Control rendering inputs. Fix browser, viewport, fonts, test data, and execution environment. Screenshot comparisons can vary across platforms and operating systems; Android’s screenshot-testing guidance recommends consistent conditions, such as CI or cloud execution, for pixel-perfect comparison.
- Keep live SMS checks separate. If delivery and real verification must be tested, run that as a distinct integration or end-to-end check. It has external delivery and throttling dependencies that are unnecessary for a visual baseline.

A parsing or validation result does not establish that a number is assigned, reachable, controlled by the test user, or able to receive an OTP. It cannot receive a code or prove ownership.

Troubleshoot unstable OTP screenshots
- The test hangs waiting for a code: The test is probably depending on live SMS. For visual assertions, use fixture state; for provider behavior, configure the provider’s documented test mechanism.
- A fictional number is rejected: Confirm that it is registered or configured in the correct provider project, uses the required format, and is supported by your application’s authentication configuration. A number in Indian format alone is not a provider test credential.
- Sign-in succeeds but exposes too much access: Treat the test identity as a real authenticated user. Reduce its permissions or claims, secure the fixture, and prevent test configuration from being enabled in production.
- Pixel comparisons vary between runs or machines: Check viewport, browser, operating system, font availability, and fixture state. Run comparisons in a consistent CI or cloud environment.
- Number validation passes but OTP does not arrive: Validation and ownership/delivery are separate. A number library can check or format input; it cannot deliver an OTP or establish control of the number.
- Real SMS checks become throttled or inconsistent: Keep those checks out of the screenshot baseline and run them separately with the provider’s documented limits and test setup in mind.
