To control an iPhone photo before you take it, tap the subject to set focus, drag the on-screen exposure control to brighten or darken the image, and choose a Photographic Style for its color and tone. To keep focus and exposure fixed, touch and hold the focus area until AE/AF Lock appears. The exact menus and advanced options vary by iPhone model and camera mode.
Focus on a subject and adjust brightness
In Camera, tap the part of the frame you want sharp. iPhone normally sets focus and exposure automatically; Apple notes that face detection can balance exposure across multiple faces. After tapping, drag the exposure control beside the focus area up to brighten or down to darken the image. Apple’s iPhone camera tools guide describes this touchscreen workflow.

Keep focus and exposure from shifting
For a still subject or a series of shots from the same position, touch and hold the focus area until “AE/AF Lock” appears. Focus and exposure stay locked together until you tap elsewhere to unlock. This is a temporary on-screen lock; it is not the same as preserving an exposure adjustment for the next time Camera opens.

Adjust exposure from Camera Controls
You can also open Camera Controls or swipe up from the camera modes, choose Exposure, and drag its slider. Apple says this menu adjustment stays locked until Camera is opened again. To retain the exposure adjustment across launches, go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings and turn on Exposure Adjustment.

Choose and customize a Photographic Style
Photographic Styles change a photo’s look, including color and tone; they are separate from focus and exposure. Apple describes them as adjusting specific colors in different parts of a photo to create a customized look. In Camera, tap Camera Controls or swipe up from the camera modes, tap Styles, then swipe through the previews and select the look you want. Apple’s Photographic Styles guide explains which options are available on supported models.
Tune or reset a style
On models that support the latest-generation styles, tap Customize to adjust the available tone, color, and intensity controls. Options differ by model: Apple documents Tone and Warmth sliders on some supported iPhones, while iPhone 18 Pro models also offer texture options such as Soft Skin, Glow, and Film, along with film grain. Choose Standard to return to the standard look.

The selected style applies to photos until you change it or close Camera. To keep your choice for the next Camera launch, go to Settings > Camera > Preserve Settings and turn on Photographic Style. This preserves the chosen style, not a temporary AE/AF Lock.

Camera Control is available only on selected iPhone models, and the settings shown depend on the camera mode. On a supported phone, lightly double-press Camera Control to show available settings. Scroll to Exposure, lightly press to select it, then slide to adjust brightness. Apple’s Camera Control guide documents this alternative.

Lock focus and exposure with Camera Control
- Go to Settings > Camera > Camera Control and turn on Lock Focus and Exposure.
- Open Camera, then lightly press and hold Camera Control until AE/AF Lock appears.
- Keep a finger on the control while you want the lock active. Releasing Camera Control turns the lock off.
Advanced focus and exposure tools on iPhone 18 Pro
Apple’s current guide documents additional tools specifically for iPhone 18 Pro models; they are not universal iPhone controls and are unavailable in some camera modes. In supported modes, the Focus tool lets you set focus distance, choose Ultra Wide, Main, or Telephoto, and return to autofocus with A. Double-tap the subject frame to track a moving subject.
Those models also provide manual Lens Aperture, Shutter Speed, and White Balance controls, plus a histogram for viewing exposure across the frame. Otherwise, the Main camera sets aperture, shutter speed, and white balance automatically. See Apple’s guide to advanced iPhone camera settings for the model-specific controls and mode limits.

Make adjustments after taking the photo
Correct brightness in Photos
Open the image in Photos, tap Edit > Adjust, choose Exposure, and drag the slider. Photos also offers other light and color adjustments, including Brilliance and Highlights. Apple’s photo editing guide covers these adjustments.

On supported models, open the photo in Photos and tap Edit > Styles to choose another style or change its available values. Apple says later Photographic Style editing on models that support the latest-generation styles requires capturing images in High Efficiency format. If you want that editing option, check the Camera format setting before shooting; style editing availability depends on the model.
