How do I use Gyre with an unlisted YouTube stream for testing? Create or schedule a YouTube broadcast in Live Control Room, set its visibility to Unlisted, then connect Gyre using the workflow available for your account. If you use manual encoder settings, enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, start the feed, and click Go live in YouTube when the preview appears. Anyone with the unlisted link can watch, so it is link-accessible—not restricted to invited viewers.
Choose the test audience before you start
An unlisted broadcast is useful when you want to test an audience-facing YouTube live stream without listing it publicly. It is not private: anyone who has the link can watch, and viewers can share that link. Send it only to the testers you intend to include. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility options in its live-stream settings. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

If you need a creator-only preview rather than a broadcast that testers can open, distinguish that from the separate private monitor stream described in YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation. The monitor stream and the audience-facing broadcast are separate outputs; an unlisted broadcast is still the latter. Google for Developers: YouTube Live Streaming API Overview.

Set up an unlisted YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe creating or scheduling the broadcast and configuring its settings. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Set visibility to Unlisted. Check the selected broadcast’s privacy setting before proceeding. Unlisted controls whether it is listed publicly; it does not prevent link holders from watching.
- Choose how Gyre connects. Gyre’s published guidance describes channel authorization that can create a YouTube broadcast and bind a stream key, while retaining manual setup for some configurations. Follow the option shown for your account rather than assuming every setup has the same steps. Gyre update: full live stream automation via YouTube API; How to stream pre-recorded video as live with Gyre in 2026.
- For manual encoder setup, copy the connection details. In YouTube’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key, then enter them in the applicable Gyre or encoder stream settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not post it or send it to testers.
- Start the Gyre/encoder feed and check the preview. Wait for the incoming signal to appear in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder feed alone does not necessarily start the audience-facing broadcast.
- Click Go live in YouTube. Once the preview is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room to begin the broadcast. Confirm the stream is live before sharing its unlisted link.
End the test and check the archive
When the test is over, end the broadcast in YouTube, then stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. Check the recording’s visibility in Studio afterward; do not assume the archive’s privacy setting will remain what you intended without verifying it. Unlisted broadcast or private monitor stream?
| Testing option | Who can watch | Audience-facing broadcast? | Connection setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unlisted broadcast | Anyone with the link | Yes. It is a YouTube broadcast, but it is not publicly listed. | Gyre may use channel authorization or manual URL/key setup, depending on the available workflow. |
| Private monitor stream | The creator for preview/testing | No audience-facing broadcast is implied by the monitor output; YouTube documents it separately from the broadcast stream. | The cited monitor/broadcast distinction is from YouTube’s API documentation; the Gyre workflow depends on the account configuration. |
These options solve different testing needs. Use an unlisted broadcast when testers need to watch the actual YouTube stream through a link. Use the monitor output when the purpose is creator-side preview/testing, not link-based audience access.
