Microsoft Edge’s current documented way to keep related tabs together is Workspaces. A Workspace gives a set of tabs its own named browser window and color theme, so research tabs, shopping tabs, or work projects stay separated from everything else.
Microsoft’s current instructions do not provide a separate, supported step-by-step procedure for creating an ordinary colored tab group directly from the tab strip. If you are using a recent desktop version of Edge, use Workspaces for this purpose.

- You are using desktop Microsoft Edge on Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS.
- Edge is version 144 or later.
- You are signed in with a Microsoft account (MSA) or a Microsoft Azure Active Directory account (AAD).
They are not documented as supported in Edge for Android, iPhone, or other unsupported environments. To check Edge’s version, open Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Edge checks for updates on that page.

Turn on Workspace and tab-group synchronization
Enable synchronization if you want Workspaces and grouped tabs to remain available across supported devices signed in to the same account.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Under Profile settings, select Sync.
- Turn on Workspaces and Tab Groups.
Check this setting on each device. If it is disabled on one computer, a Workspace may be missing or its contents may not be current there.
Create a Workspace from your open tabs
This is the quickest option when the tabs you want to group are already open.
- Select the Search tabs icon in the top-left corner of the Edge window.
- Select Manage workspaces.
- Open the New Workspace drop-down.
- Select Create workspace with X tabs. The X represents the number of tabs currently open.
- Enter a name for the Workspace.
- Choose a theme or color.
- Select Done.
Edge opens the new Workspace in a new browser window. The tabs used to create it are associated with that Workspace, and you can return to it from the Workspaces menu at the top-left of the browser.
Create a blank Workspace
Use a blank Workspace when you want to start a separate tab collection without moving or organizing your current tabs.

- Select Search tabs.
- Select Manage workspaces.
- Select the New Workspace drop-down.
- Select Create blank workspace.
- Enter a name.
- Choose a theme.
- Select Done.
Edge opens the blank Workspace in a new browser window. Open additional tabs in that window to add them to the Workspace.
Open and switch between grouped tabs
Select the Workspaces icon in the top-left corner of Edge. Choose a Workspace from the menu to open it. Each Workspace has its own name and theme, making it easier to identify the right collection when several browser windows are open.
The current Workspace menu is ordered by most recently used. It is not automatically ordered by creation date, and the current implementation does not provide the older custom sorting behavior.
Rename or recolor a Workspace
You can change the label and appearance later without recreating the grouped tabs.
- Select the Workspaces icon in the top-left.
- Select More options (…) beside the Workspace you want to change.
- Select Edit workspace.
- Enter a new name and choose a theme.
- Select Done.
Delete a Workspace
Delete a Workspace when you no longer need its tab collection.

- Select the Workspaces icon.
- Select More options (…) beside the Workspace.
- Select Delete workspace.
- Select Delete to confirm.
Because deletion removes the Workspace itself, check that you no longer need its tabs before confirming. Save important pages as favorites or elsewhere first if you may need them later.
What the current Workspaces feature does not do
Some older Edge guides describe features that belong to the previous Workspace implementation. Microsoft’s current Workspaces do not support:
- Sharing or collaborating on a Workspace
- Joining another person’s Workspace
- Inviting other people
- Locking tabs
- OneDrive storage requirements
In particular, claims that you can send a Workspace to another person or work in it together are outdated for the current implementation. The older version required Edge 114 or later; the new implementation requires Edge 144 or later.
Useful keyboard shortcuts
Microsoft does not document a dedicated keyboard shortcut for creating, naming, moving, or deleting a tab group or Workspace. Group management is performed through Edge’s graphical menus.

Fix missing or outdated Workspaces
Workspaces is not visible
Confirm the three documented requirements first: use desktop Edge, update to Edge 144 or later, and sign in with an MSA or AAD account. A device outside those requirements is not documented as supported.
A Workspace is missing on another computer
Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Sync and make sure Workspaces and Tab Groups is enabled on all supported devices. Also confirm that each device is signed in to the account that owns the Workspace.
The menu looks different from an older guide
That may be expected. Microsoft changed the Workspace implementation. Current Workspaces use a most-recently-used order and do not include the previous sharing, collaboration, or OneDrive-related behavior.

Can I create a normal colored tab group from the Edge tab strip?
Microsoft’s current support documentation describes Workspaces as the primary way to group related tabs and does not provide a separate current procedure for creating an ordinary colored tab group from the tab strip. Use a Workspace on supported desktop Edge.

A Workspace is a named tab collection that opens in its own Edge window and can have a theme. Microsoft’s current sync setting combines the feature names as “Workspaces and Tab Groups,” but its current step-by-step grouping instructions are for Workspaces.

Can I share an Edge Workspace with someone?
No. The current Workspaces implementation does not support sharing, collaboration, joining another person’s Workspace, or inviting others.
Does Edge Workspaces require OneDrive?
No. The current implementation does not require OneDrive storage. That requirement belonged to the previous Workspace implementation described in older documentation.
Which version of Edge supports the current Workspaces?
The current implementation requires Microsoft Edge version 144 or later on Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS, with an MSA or AAD account signed in.

Microsoft’s current keyboard-shortcut list does not document a dedicated shortcut for creating or managing a Workspace. Use Search tabs, Manage workspaces, and the Workspace menus.
The Bottom Line
For current desktop Edge, create a grouped tab collection through Search tabs > Manage workspaces. Choose Create workspace with X tabs to organize tabs you already have open, or Create blank workspace to start from scratch. Give it a name and theme, enable Workspaces and Tab Groups under Sync, and ignore older instructions about collaboration or OneDrive because they describe a previous version.
