Google Maps can sort saved places into lists you name, so restaurant tips, errands and future-trip stops do not have to disappear into one pile of pins. Create a list, save places to it, and—on Android or desktop—use its visibility and sharing controls to make the map work for the way you plan.

What Google Maps lists can do

When you save a location, you can put it in a named list rather than relying on a single general collection. Custom lists can also use distinct icons, making categories easier to recognize on the map. Google Product Director Maz Khorasani described the aim in an October 9, 2025 post: “Your map becomes customized with your favorites or must-try spots — making it super easy to organize and understand the different types of places you’ve saved.” (Google Maps product post)

For example, you might make lists called “Try nearby,” “Weekend errands” and “Portland trip.” These are possible organizing habits, not required categories. Keep lists broad enough to stay useful, but distinct enough that you can find a place when you need it.

Create a list and add places

On Android

  1. Open Google Maps and tap You.
  2. Tap New list, enter a name and description, choose whether the list is private or shared, then save it.
  3. Search for a place or tap it on the map, open its place card, and tap Save.
  4. Choose the list where you want to keep the place, or create a new list from the save flow.

To change a custom list’s icon on Android, find it under your lists, open its menu, choose Edit list, then Edit icon and save. Google’s default lists—Favorites, Want to go, Starred places, Labeled and Travel plans—do not allow icon changes. See Google’s Android instructions for creating and managing lists.

On a computer

  1. Open Google Maps and select Saved, then New list.
  2. Name the list and choose an icon if you want one.
  3. Find a place, click Save, and select the list to add it.

On desktop, the Saved menu also lets you show or hide a list on the map. Labels can vary by platform, so follow the steps for the device you are using. Google’s computer instructions for lists cover list creation and management.

Choose between personal, shared and default lists

Choice Useful when What to know
Private list You are collecting places for yourself. Google says saved places are private unless you create and share a list. You need to be signed in to a Google Account to save and find places. Google’s saved-places guidance
Shared list You want other people to see or contribute to a collection. You can share a list and invite collaborators; access can be managed separately. On desktop, Google describes private lists and lists viewable by anyone with the link. Starred places cannot be shared. Sharing options and labels depend on platform. Google’s computer list guidance and Android list guidance
Default list You want a built-in category such as Favorites or Want to go. Default lists are ready to use, but their icons cannot be customized on Android. A custom list gives you your own name and, where supported, icon choice. Google’s Android list guidance

You can also follow another person’s list. If you want a copy of your own saved lists, Google’s computer help page describes exporting them through Google Takeout. Check Google’s platform-specific instructions before changing access or exporting, as the controls differ.

Find a saved place when you need it

On Android, the You tab surfaces your lists and offers Recently saved and Nearby saved. These shortcuts have limits: Google says Nearby saved is unavailable when you have no saved place within 25 km (about 16 miles), and Recently saved is unavailable if you have not saved a place in the preceding 180 days. The same help page describes searching and filtering personal places. See Google’s Android instructions for finding saved places.

On a computer, open Saved to browse your lists. If a saved place is not easy to spot, check whether its list is hidden from the map, then use the list itself rather than scanning pins. Showing a list can make its places visible at a glance; hiding it can reduce clutter when you are working with other map information.

Keep the map useful as your lists grow

  • Choose names that describe a use or destination, not just a vague label.
  • Use separate lists when you need different visibility or sharing settings.
  • Assign icons to custom lists on Android when visual recognition will help; default-list icons cannot be edited there.
  • Hide lists you do not need to see on the map, and show them when you are ready to use them.
  • Keep very large lists in check: Google’s computer help page says saved lists are limited to 3,000 entries and lists above that may not display properly. Google’s computer guidance on saved places

Google reported in August 2020 that people worldwide had saved more than 7 billion places in Maps. That is a historical company-reported figure, not a current total, but it illustrates why personal organization can matter even within a mature maps app. (Google’s August 2020 post)
